Special Bulletin Though we are sending this action ALERT during 1996, we recommend you hold off acting on it until 1997. :)
Assignment #1:
The Ann Landers column published today (12/31) in papers around the country included a letter from one of our colleagues, Chuck Thomas, of the Marijuana Policy Project (http://www.mpp.org), calling for the elimination of criminal sanctions against users of marijuana, written in response to Landers' Christmas column lamenting, among other things, the failure of the war on drugs and the burgeoning prison population. Landers followed by noting that Thomas had touched a "hot button" issue and asked readers to submit their opinions. This is an open invitation to make our opinions known. We ask our members to take the opportunity and send letters to:

Points you might wish to use:
  • No drug is perfectly safe, but sending people to prison is not a sensible policy.

snopes's recent trolling of batty old Ann Landers is a spectacular triumph for him and for AFU in general. Landers has become a very wary quarry since I exposed the hoax of her claims about continual ragging from Yale University. (She used to claim all the time that she was particularly targetted by Yale students, but could always spot their fake letters. She was wrong on both counts). On the other hand, I successfully trolled Ann Landers into *actually* *trying* a mixture of lard and sugar as a soap substitute (printed in the old bird's column on July 14 1989. (Little gator on AFU was driven to try it herself too, in case it really did work, and I recommend that everyone reading this also put it to the test.) Sadly, I had no answer when I wrote to Ann asking her advice on a family problem, but describing her own circumstances as though they were mine...

The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good. Too many people today know the price of everything and the value of nothing. Television has proved that people will look at anything rather than each other. The poor wish to be rich, the rich wish to be happy, the single wish to be married, and the married wish to be dead. If I were asked to give what I consider the single most useful bit of advice for all humanity it would be this: Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life and when it comes, hold you head high, look it squarely in eye and say, 'I will be bigger than you. You cannot defeat me.' Homepage Advertising Contact Us FAQ/ Help Ann Landers famous quotes Want to receive a daily FREE!! new Quotation? Subscribe NOW! more info

Ann Landers really strikes out on a question about public etiquette
    contributed by
Scott Miller Considering that Ann Landers has come a long way from her severely homophobic origins, and generally has good advice on same-sex issues, today's column was like a blast of frigid wind from the Dark Ages. It was so bad, in fact, that it calls for a separate Action Alert. In her lead story June 25th, Landers responds to a letter from a 35-year old woman who has just come out of the closet. The woman feels that she is accepted by her family, until the dreaded moment at her nephew's birthday party when she dared to place her hand on her partner's leg while sitting on the sofa. Now, despite apologizing for having had the audacity to show minimal affection for "the love of (her) life," she has been told that she is no longer welcome in her sister's house. So how did Ann respond? By berating this poor woman for showing discreet affection for her partner and instructing her to apologize again. Ann, are you kidding?

    http://www.funnycoke.com/Ann Landers Obituary.html
(The Unofficial) Ann Landers Obituary Esther Pauline Friedman Eppie Ann Landers Lederer, aka just Ann Landers, wrote herself into oblivion Saturday 22 June 2002 at age 83 at her Lake Shore Drive home, after a bout with writers block. "Once those words get all bunged up, it's like the complete stoppage of a real important artery or something" Ms. Landers personal physician, Dr. Doogie Howser Kildare, told reporters. Ms. Landers would have turned 84 on 4 July of this year. Ms. Landers, twin sister of Pauline Esther Friedman PoPo Abigail Van Buren Dear Abby Phillips, began her advice career on 16 October 1955, more than 40 years ago. Upon the advice of the famed psychic Mavis Davis of the Psychic Babbling Network, she sought out advice for a very personal problem. Not finding a source for advice except from a $200 per hour shrink, she decided it was time to provide the advice or the "economical shrinkage" as she often put it, herself. "Folks with worries can get my attention and seek advice for the cost of a postage stamp. That is in almost anybody's budget." Her official self proclaimed title was "Shrink Wrapper." She classified herself as a good listener but what she really was, was a good reader. Her readers wrote to her for advice and she read the letters. Her readers did not call her and verbally request advice. I hope she had an editor proofing her columns so she didn't write things she really didn't mean but I doubt it. In 1993, she was taken to task for calling the Pope a Pollack. Hey, she called a spade a spade. What's wrong with that? Jews are Heebs, Italians are Wops and the Stones are Micks. Get over it.
