Internet Links PREFACE Unless you score 80% or better on the short scuba quiz , you can probably benefit from reading this book. Knowledge of basic underwater physiology is critical to diving safety, of course, and the subject is taught in every certification class. For example, the first rule of diving don't hold your breath is based on Boyle's law of gas pressures, which predicts that a scuba diver's lungs will expand if breath is held on ascent. The consequence can be a serious and even fatal over-expansion injury. Although all certification manuals and general scuba books review underwater physiology, the coverage is necessarily limited. Typically, one chapter is devoted to the subject. Important effects of altered physiology, such as decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism, are covered only briefly. As a recreational diver and pulmonary physician, I believe there is need for a book that more fully explains this material. Not a textbook for the doctor, engineer or scientist, but a book any recreational diver can understand. A book that answers questions frequently pondered by the recreational diver. After searching and finding no such book, I decided to write one! Scuba Diving Explained is intended for all sport divers because the material is important for all of us, from beginner to people with years of experience.

LAWRENCE MARTIN (WAPISTAN) New: New recording by Wapistan Born on the Moose Factory Reserve, the son of a Cree mother and Irish father, he was raised by his grandparents. He is named after the small but resourceful animal (Wapistan means Martin in James Bay Cree) which is known for being a good leader and hunter. Taught to play guitar by an aunt, music has always been an important part of his life. Wapistan was educated in North Bay, Ontario and spent the early part of his working life in a variety of jobs in mines, construction, and the railway. However, his real interest lay in communications so he returned to school to pursue his dream. Today, in addition to being a recording artist, he is the Executive Director of the Wawatay Native Communications which provides radio, television, and newspaper communications to native reserves throughout northern Ontario and Canada. Wapistan was until just recently the Mayor of Sioux Lookout, Ontario, a community of over 3000 people (he was the first Aboriginal Mayor ever elected in the history of the province). Wapistan is no stranger to challenge one of his first efforts at sharing his culture was to organize the television broadcast of a Pow Wow from outside Timmins, Ontario to the rest of the province an effort which earned him the gift of the honoured Eagle Feather and the name: Electronic Warrior.

Before the era of rapid blood gas analysis, clinicians often assessed hypoxemia on clinical grounds alone, primarily by looking for cyanosis. Clinical assessment of hypoxemia now is known to be notoriously unreliable for several reasons, including the following: A host of factors, from natural skin pigment to room lighting, can affect detection of cyanosis. As with many other physical examination findings, significant interobserver variation occurs in detecting cyanosis. Some physicians diagnose cyanosis as an indicator of hypoxemia when it cannot be present (ie, the patient has normal oxygen saturation), while other physicians miss cyanosis when it should be present (ie, very low oxygen saturation with normal hemoglobin). Approximately 5 g/dL of unoxygenated hemoglobin in the capillaries generates the dark blue color appreciated clinically as cyanosis. For this reason, patients who are anemic may be hypoxemic without showing any cyanosis. Ancillary signs and symptoms of hypoxemia (eg, tachycardia, tachypnea, mental status changes) are nonspecific and of no value in reliably detecting hypoxemia. For example, patients may be dyspneic at rest with normal PaO

Profile of Lawrence Martin Native Veteran Like most of the lads from the Nipigon area, Lawrence was eager to get signed up come war time. And like a lot of these enthusiastic fellows, it didn't take the army long to find out he was too young for service and send him home. For a whole year, as he waited for his 18th birthday to roll around. He spent his time in the bush as a lumber jack. In the winter of 1942, Lawrence was cutting trees and then skidding logs with horses. When spring came the river was full of logs, and Lawrence was on hand for the river drive, then on the boats bringing the logs to the mill. Hard work was not new to this young man waiting for the day he would be of age to go and enlist again. When Lawrence got back to Canada he, like a lot of boys from the area. Volunteered for duty in the Pacific. Because the fighting in the Pacific was so different from that in Europe, he took special training in Macdonald for the tour. This was at the tail end of the war and before he shipped out the war had ended. Only too glad to hear that victory had been obtained, Lawrence was discharged and headed home. After the home-coming celebrations he settled back into his old job, the logging industry.Nine years later, Lawrence found himself becoming more and more worried about what was happening in Asia. His strong beliefs against Communism and knowing that things in Korea did not look good, he volunteered again to serve his country. In April of 1954, Corporal Lawrence Martin left his wife and two small sons, knowing that he must fight to secure their future in a free nation.

February 3, 1999 Editor, Vancouver Sun; In "A cautionary note to the health Nazis" (Feb. 2), Lawrence Martin never got around to identifying any "health Nazis" by name. I will try to be of assistance. Under the National Socialist regime that governed Germany during the 1930's and part of the 1940's, there was no tolerance for political dissent. This is an arrangement that Imperial Tobacco, and their parent company Imasco, would be comfortable with. Prior to the du Maurier Jazz Festival in Vancouver in June, 1996, an Imperial Tobacco manager instructed security guards to deny protesters access to Water Street, and confiscate any literature that they might attempt to distribute. The fact that Water Street is public property didn't matter. During the du Maurier Open Tennis tournament in Toronto in July, 1996, security guards hired by Imperial Tobacco confiscated literature from a group of York University students who were protesting Imperial Tobacco's involvement in an athletic event. The students were not even on National Tennis Centre property; They were in the street. On August 31, 1996, I and several other people protesting against tobacco promotion during the Molson Indy were removed from Terry Fox Plaza by security guards. It didn't matter that Terry Fox devoted the last years of his life to raising cancer awareness.
