Vivien Leigh
"People who are very beautiful make their own laws."
Vivien Leigh was born Vivian Mary Hartley on November 5, 1913, in India. When she was six years old Vivien's parents took her to live in England where she could have a proper education. After seeing her first play Vivien decided she wanted to become an actress. In 1932 Vivien married Herbert Marshall. She gave birth to a daughter the following year. Vivien started her career performing on the London stage and soon began getting movie offers. In 1937 Vivien costarred with Laurence Olivier in Fire Over England. She fell in love with Laurence and left her husband to be with him. Vivien beat out dozens of other actresses to land the coveted role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind A candid photo of Vivien
She would win an Academy Award for her performance in the film. Vivien and Laurence were married in 1940. Together they starred in the movies That Hamilton Woman and Caesar and Cleopatra. She won her second Oscar in 1952 for her role in A Streetcar Named Desire. Vivien had several miscarriages and suffered from frequent bouts of depression. She was later diagnosed as being manic depressive. In 1960 Vivien and Laurence divorced. Her final film, Ship of Fools, was released in 1965. Two years later she came down a serious case of tuberculosis. Vivien died on July 7, 1967 at the age of fifty-three. She was cremated and her ashes were scattered at her London home. Biography
Vivien Leigh

Born Vivian Mary Hartley, she was the second wife of Sir Laurence Olivier, whom she married (as her second husband) in 1937 and divorced in 1960. Born Theatre
Died Actor
She first came into prominence as Henriette in The Mask of Virtue (1935), an adaptation by Ashley Dukes of Carl Sternheim's Die Marquise von Arcis, and as Jenny Meere in Clemence Dane's dramatisation of Max Beerbohn's story The Happy Hypocrite (1936). In 1937 she played Ophelia to Olivier's Hamlet at Elsinore Castle in Denmark. She later played a number of Shakespearian parts at the Old Vic and was also outstanding as Sabina in Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth (1945). It was, however, with her Blanche du Bois in Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire (1949) that she gave proof of greater powers as an actress than she had hitherto shown (her work in films was already outstanding), and she became one of London's leading actresses.
During the Festival of Britain in 1951 she appeared with Olivier in Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra and Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, and in 1955 was at Stratford-upon-Avon, appearing as Lady Macbeth, Viola in Twelfth Night, and Lavinia to the Titus Andronicus of Olivier. Both their performances in this little-known play were accounted as most memorable. She had a further success in Giraudoux's Duel of Angels (1957), and in 1961 undertook an extensive tour for the Old Vic with a repertory which included a new version of the younger Dumas's The Lady of the Camellias. She appeared in New York in 1963 as Tatiana in a musical version of Sherwood's Tovarich, and in England two years later toured as the Contessa Sanziani in La Contessa, based on a novel by Maurice Druon.

A Tribute to Vivien Leigh For all her acclaim and popularity as a star, Vivien Leigh, born Vivien Mary Hartley on November 5, 1913 in Darjeeling, India, made only 20 films from 1935 to 1965. Most of them were made in the 1930s. Ms. Leigh's relatively short life (and career) was indeed a series of ups and downs, strangely mirroring the manic-depression (now known as bipolar disorder ) with which she was diagnosed.
On the "up" side, she married the great love of her life and one of the world's finest actors, Sir Laurence Olivier , and acted with him on the British stage for 20 years. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in one of the most popular films ever made, Gone With the Wind , a role that she basically "lucked" into as a relative unknown, beating out several of Hollywood's most celebrated actresses. She won a second Oscar for her role in
