Courtesy of Jade's Online Fan Club Jade Leung Chang Biography Born: November 23rd, 1969 (Hong Kong) This Hong Kong native went from a Miss Asia beauty pageant contestant in 1990 to overnight action heroine after her breakout role in Black Cat (1991). It was a darker remake of Luc Besson's groundbreaking cult film, La Femme Nikita (1991) about a female criminal who is reprogrammed into an expendable assassin. The film's success guaranteed a remake the following year, yet failed to be as commercially or critically successful. Combining a potent sensuality with a determination to earn her place among the likes of female action stars like Michelle Yeoh, Leung learned kung fu and performed many of her own stunts. Leung went on to star in a string of ultra-violent action films of varying quality that were happy to capitalize on her sex appeal with Fox Hunter and Enemy Shadow , both released in 1995 being career highlights. Sometimes one has to sympathize with the pressures faced by Hong Kong filmmakers. Jade Leung teams up with Pak Chin Shek in a formulaic genre film with routine shootouts and romance: how much better can you expect it to be? While they were about it, why didn't the filmmakers come up with a more commercial title? The writer and director made a movie out of the barest of concepts. The result is a mess, and one can only feel embarrassment for the creators. - ManAlone Ho The goings-on behind the scenes during the production - Jade Leung injured when filming an explosion scene, director Chan Tung-chun fired and not given any credit - are more noteworthy than the movie itself. Director Mak Tai-kit who took over has a way with a shot but his forte doesn't lie in handling drama and characters. Moreover, Law Kwan-tso's screenplay is shallow and contrived. Stanley Chan, 40, Dat Ming Leung, 41, Yuk Ching Liu, 53, Ru Xiang Zhao, 36, and Dan Chau, 26, each pleaded guilty in September to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. U.S. District Judge Kent Dawson imposed the harshest sentence four years and four months on Chan. Court records indicate that Chan, Leung and Liu had leadership roles in the conspiracy, which began in March 1998. Chan, speaking through a Chinese interpreter, apologized to Dawson on Friday for his criminal conduct. "I will correct myself and start all over again and be a law-abiding citizen," the defendant vowed. Romance of the Jade Hall (Part 1) (1957) Cantonese opera-singing screen star Cheung Ying plays Ali, an entertainer whose reputation for womanising has him hauled up in front of a queen (Law Yim-hing). Deciding to judge Ali's charms for herself over a private dinner, the queen quickly falls for his charms and a marriage is on the cards. Ali, however, doesn't warm to the palace lifestyle and yearns for the liberties of life back home, as too does his assistant Jack (Leung Sing-po) after he falls for the queen's maid, Lolo (Tam Lan-hing). The plot's enough for a 10-minute short but, presented via Cantonese opera, it's stretched to two hours thanks to the singing. Very few lines in the film are conventional conversation and the continued traditional music accompaniment lends the comedy a good sense of rhythm. Interestingly, the film is presentedwithout any firm reference to location or date in the film itself, barring a large 1950s limo appearing near the end and gaudy Western costuming. Sets are glaringly recycled throughout the film but the large European-style interior designs are distinctive thanks to curved finishes and sculptural furnishings. Law Yim-hing is attractive as the queen and while Cheung and Leung's song and humour could be an acquired taste for some contemporary viewers, I liked the pair. Helena Law Lan has an ongoing bit part as one of the queen's guards, and is dolled up in a silvery shirt, a mini-skirt, white boots and a large feather in her tiara.

Hung Tai is indeed up to no good and Miss Leung seems to be he sole well-meaning character in the business. When she comes up with a plan to help cash-strapped student acquire extra money for their tuition fees, her boss and colleagues think it's a great way to rinse their dirty dollars. And it's a chance to get extra names on the debtor list too. The higher-ups don't tell Miss Leung about their sneaky plans, however, and have her troop into a college to enthusiastically sell the scheme. The university and its shambolic student representatives are swung on the idea and five kids in particular snap up loans so they can go into business and get rich quick. Their first $100,000 loan turns to nil with a dud investment but a second, and larger, loan gets them a VCD shop up and running. Michael is watching from the sidelines and approaches Miss Leung for inside help to crack the case ad save the kids from ruin... Money Laundry offers little reward for its viewer. On the minimal upside, Simon Loui offers a mildly sinister presence as a corporate loan shark. Jade Leung kicks out the martial arts a couple of times and one kid provides gratuitous overacting throughout. The film also bases its student loans aspect around a government failing, suggesting that students wouldn't need extra finance if the government hadn't "deserted" them. But on the whole
