Liberace Liberates Persian Room Guests Wearing a miniature-piano ring fashioned of platinum and studded with diamonds and playing what is said to be the world's largest concert grand piano, Liberace (pronounced Liber-AH-chee) returned Thursday to the Persian Room of the Plaza. The evening also marked the local debut of the young dancers, Marge and Gower Champion, and the return to the Plaza bandstand of Joel Herron and his orchestra.
By way of introduction may I say that Liberace, like Hildegarde, hails from Milwaukee, that he looks like a cross between Robert Alda and Cornel Wilde of the movies, that he dropped his first name. at the suggestion of the late Paderewski (who did the same) and that he has 188 miniature pianos. I might also add that he has a press book that is so extravagant in material that's It's difficult to choose between adjectives.
Custom Built Piano.
The concert piano he plays at he Persian Room was custom built before the war by Julius Bluthner in Leipzig, Germany. Despite the express strike, it was delivered the last minute, in time for the pianist to make the grand entry and take his seat at the piano as, electrically lit candelabra slowly glowed to life.
Liberace has masterful stage presence, a twinkle in his eye, a good grasp of humor that seems natural and, of course, a brilliant touch at the piano. He needed all of the human props as well as the manufactured ones opening night because the dancers had received an ovation, but he was equal to the task.

I was lucky enough to see Liberace before he died. The concert was a weird, wild, wonderful spectacle, and it left me awestruck. I couldn't believe that a entire performance (not to mention a several decades long career) could be construed from such unrestrained, indulgent superficiality. The majority of the show consisted of Liberace parading around the stage in outrageous outfits to the "oohs" and "ahhs" of the audience, which was dominated by women over the age of forty. Liberace's successful lawsuit against the London tabloid, the Daily Mirror, was a critical moment in his career. It also provides a vivid picture of the closeted world of the 1950s. This excerpt is from Chapter Nine: "You Can Be Sure If It's Westinghouse." The Daily Mirror New York Times headlined its one version of the trial with "Liberace Denies He Is Homosexual."

About Dr. Hammargren and his Home.
Castillo del Sol, as it is now called, started out as a $45,000 house built in 1969 from a standard plan as a frame stucco, four bedroom house. the larg addition built in 1975 was placed over the top and in front of the house to accommodate an observatory and planetairum. This was built to local code and without a variance, as it met the conditions for ranch estates that limit height to 35 feet. Several lawsuits have been dismissed after it was proven that the building met applicable codes and that the doctor was not a "Peeping Tom".
The doctor had long wanted to study astronomy, but never had the time, money, or the inclination to sit outside in the cold Minnesota nights to study the stars. His science interests are broad, ranging from biology to medicine to mathematics, anthropology and psychology. His special focus is the history of scientific thought. Most old structures such as the pyramids and Stonehenge were oriented to directions relevant to the positions and motions of the sun, moon and stars. The specific discipline that studies this combination of archaeology and astronomy is called archaeoastronomy. Lonnie fancies himself as an amateur archaeoastronomer.
Above the entrance is a stairway to the top of the Mayan pyramid. This is modeled after the Castillo pyramid in the Yucatan. It gives rise to the name of the house, Castillo Del Sol, the Castle of the Sun.

Used with permission. unadulterated cheese of America at its aesthetic nadir. Liberace was a genteel, half innocent culture whore, gambling the soul of history on the craps table of showbiz, a strange, inbred cross between a historian and a pimp. He worshipped nobility, but did it with only half the cultural education necessary to pull it off. But he had just enough class to fool his audience of middle-class, unquestioning, mostly conservative housewives and their tag-along husbands. Liberace knew enough about Victorian culture to know which goblets he just had to own, but not enough to know that any proper owner of fine cut crystal would never place them on the same table with the world's most gauche sequinned napkin rings. Liberace didn't know when to quit because Liberace didn't know where class began and where gauche left off.

    The Spectacle King
In Vegas, a subtle but telling war bubbles underneath the surface of the collective consciousness - a war that is about deciding who is the true king of Vegas: Elvis or Englebert, Tom Jones or Wayne Newton, Sigfried and Roy or Liberace. Conduct an informal interview of metropolitan cabdrivers and waitreses, and you'll find that most contemporary Las Vegans mysteriously, unaccountably insist that Siegfried and Roy own the crown, always and forever. But these people are thinking only of crowd sizes, not eternal class. Naturally Siegrfied and Roy draw more people because the Vegas of today has more visitors than the Vegas of yesterday. What we need to know in order to understand Vegas and the influence that extravagant showmanship has had on American life is this: Who set the stage for the mass acceptance of outrageous flamboyance that became a defining gesture for our times? In other words, who in Vegas' history best defines

    The Liberace of Chocolate
Very good chocolate in very bad taste.
    By Sara Dickerman
Posted Thursday, February 13, 2003, at 7:57 AM PT
Shock Jacques If pastry chef Jacques Torres were ever imprisoned by an evil mastermind, I have no doubt that within 24 hours, he would escape with a hand-wrought, fully articulated chocolate gun. It would fire delicious but deadly cacao nib bullets, and, knowing Torres, it would boast decorative "pearl" handles crafted from white chocolate. Torres has become an accumulating presence on the Food Network, with one current series, Passion for Dessert ; another, Chocolate With Jacques Torres , in heavy rerun rotation; and a special, Passion for Chocolate , that aired this week. While the stagy setting and the slow pace of his shows cannot compete with the flash and fire of Iron Chef 's kitchen stadium, Torres' how-to projects are as absurd and dazzling as those of the feuding Japanese chefs. "I am feeling very passionate about chocolate today," says Torres during his chocolate special, affably if not passionately. Unlike several of his Food Network compatriots, Torres' zeal shows in his craft, not his patter. In the chocolate special, he does not discuss how to choose good chocolate, how to chop it, or how to melt it carefully. Instead, Torres puts his energies into insane feats of chocolate engineering. He coats a balloon with drizzles of chocolate, then deflates the balloon, leaving a chocolate cage "like a spider's nest." He's a shade tentative as he deflates the balloon, warning that if it should burst suddenly, the chocolate will fly onto the ceiling, walls, and floor. Torres also uses balloons to make white-chocolate flowers, which are then painted with gaudy food-color paints. Affixed to the chocolate balloon, the result is extraordinary in its fragile grandeur and in its ugliness.
