Following is a transcript of that conversation. Q: As a scientist, do you think that there is value in doing experiments in orbit? A: I really think that there is a lot of value in carrying out experiments in orbit. In the Spacelab program, in the last 10 years we have only had seven weeks of dedicated laboratory experience in space. So if you try to compare doing research in space versus research in a ground based laboratory, we are really at the beginning stages. I know in my heart that there are a lot of things that we are going to find out in the future - either processes that we can elucidate in space or new crystal structures or a variety of things that we can learn from going into space and doing primarily life science and microgravity science experiments in zero gravity that we just can not predict yet. A lot of people say "where's the beef, where's the payoff?" and we can't say that yet. Having been there twice and knowing the changes in the physical parameters of doing an experiment, there are going to be things that we find out when we get to the station - when we get to a permanent laboratory existence in space - that nobody can predict yet.

Lichtenberg Missions: STS-9 STS-45 Dr. Byron Lichtenberg has flown on two space shuttle flights as a payload specialist. On his first mission, he became the first non-NASA payload specialist to fly aboard the space shuttle and represented over 100 scientists from around the world. Lichtenberg's first mission was in 1983 on flight STS-9 aboard the shuttle Columbia . The spacecraft lifted off with Spacelab 1 in its payload bay. This was the first flight for the European developed Spacelab module and demonstrated many of the different types of science that can be conducted in orbit. In 1992 Lichtenberg took his second space flight, on space shuttle Atlantis flight STS-45 , the ATLAS-1 mission. During this mission, the crew created the world's first artificial aurora by firing a beam of electrons into the lower atmosphere. The aurora was similar to the Northern Lights, but much less intense. A native of Stroudsburg, Pa., Lichtenberg holds a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from Brown University, and a master's degree and a doctorate in biomedical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He flew 138 combat missions in the U.S. Air Force and flew F-100 and A-10 aircraft between 1974 and 1992, while in the Massachusetts Air National Guard.

Lichtenberg I first met Byron Lichtenberg in 1983. I was covering the space program for a TV station in Birmingham, and NASA held a news conference to announce the first payload specialists (people chosen from outside of the NASA astronaut corps to bring their talents to a Space Shuttle mission.) Byron was named the first payload specialist from the U.S. to fly. The mission was STS-9 - the first flight to carry the Spacelab work station. By the end of that decade, I would be working in that same studio as a writer/producer for the Marshall Space Flight Center Television group. On numerous occasions, Byron would work with us adding "television host" to his list of proven talents. Byron is a truly awesome individual. In addition to being very sharp and capable, he is also genuinely personable. I can't think of anyone I'd rather start off this series of e-nterviews than he. In 1983 he got his wish when he became a payload specialist aboard the space shuttle Columbia, the only Brown alum to become an astronaut and the first civilian to fly on board the shuttle. After Brown, where he joined ROTC and majored in aerospace engineering, Lichtenberg spent four years as a U.S. Air Force pilot. But he became disillusioned with the military and returned to graduate school to earn a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from MIT. While he was still working on his doctorate, Lichtenberg and some colleagues proposed a space-shuttle experiment studying inner-ear function under weightless conditions. NASA accepted the experiment, and Lichtenberg was on his way to becoming a payload specialist. Now a captain with Southwest Airlines, Lichtenberg also works for the X-Prize Foundation, an organization that promotes an altogether new frontier: space tourism.
