    Charles Lindbergh
'The Lone Eagle' Born Detroit, Michigan February 4, 1902 - August 26, 1974 Charles Augustus Lindbergh became interested in flying while a mechanical engineering student at the University of Wisconsin, leaving the school in 1922 to devote his life to aviation. Working his way through flight school, he purchased a war surplus Curtiss Jenny in 1923 and taught himself to fly. After a year of barnstorming, he entered the Army Air Service Flying School and received his pilot wings in 1925. Returning to civilian aviation, more barnstorming and instructing, he became an Air Mail pilot in 1926. His route from St. Louis to Chicago provided him an accelerated accumulation of flying experience at night and in adverse weather. It was on such a flight, on a cold clear night in the cockpit of the DeHavilland mailplane that he conceived the daring plan of a solo trans-Atlantic flight, and the specifications for an aircraft capable of such a mission. Securing the financial backing of a group of St. Louis businessmen in 1927, he selected the Ryan Airlines Company in San Diego to build the

Charles A. Lindbergh, the son of a Minnesota congressman, entered the University of Wisconsin in 1920. Two years later he interrupted his education as a mechanical engineer to join a flying school. He bought his own plane and became an airmail pilot in 1925. At the time, a $25,000 prize was being offered to whoever made the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris. Lindbergh obtained the backing of some St. Louis businessmen, purchased a monoplane, which he named the Spirit of St. Louis

    http://www.tombtown.com/bios/lindberg.htm
CHARLES LINDBERGH Charles Lindbergh was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 4, 1902. His father was a United States congressman and his mother taught chemistry. His fascination with air planes began when he was a child; they were a new invention then. As a child, Charles was especially interested in mechanics. By age nine, he knew all about gasoline engines. At age eleven, his parents put him in charge of driving and fixing their car. Charles quit college to go to a school in Nebraska that taught people how to fly and repair airplanes. Afterwards, he enrolled in the U.S. Army flight school to become a professional pilot. He learned that becoming a professional pilot meant more than flying an airplane well. It also meant studying and getting good grades. At first his grades weren't so good. Afraid that he might fail, he began studying during every spare moment. He even studied in th bathroom at night when he was supposed to be in bed. His hard work paid off. He graduated with the highest grades in his class. Charles was now a professional pilot. His first job as a professional pilot was flying a route between St.Louis and Chicago delivering mail to the towns along the way.

Lindbergh, Charles Augustus, 1902-74 1902-74, American aviator who made the first solo, nonstop transatlantic flight, b. Detroit; son of Charles A. Lindbergh (1859-1924). He left the Univ. of Wisconsin (1922) to study flying. After service as a flying cadet, he was commissioned (1925) in the air force reserve and later became an airmail pilot. On May 21, 1927, Lindbergh astounded the world by landing in Paris after a solo flight from New York across the Atlantic in The Spirit of St. Louis. Upon his return to the United States he received an unprecedented welcome, was promoted to colonel, and made a nationwide tour to foster popular interest in aviation. Lindbergh married (1929) Anne Morrow, the daughter of the U.S. ambassador to Mexico Dwight W. Morrow , and with her made several long flights. After the kidnapping and death of their son (see Hauptmann, Bruno Richard ) in 1932, the Lindberghs moved (1935) to England. In 1936, Lindbergh collaborated with Alexis Carrel on the invention of a perfusion pump that could maintain organs outside the body. After inspecting (1938) European air forces, Lindbergh became convinced of German air superiority; he favored a U.S. policy of isolationism with respect to the political and military struggle threatening in Europe. He returned (1939) to the United States and made antiwar speeches for the America First Committee. When these speeches were branded pro-Nazi, he resigned his reserve commission and quit the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Upon United States entry into the war Lindbergh offered his services to the air force; he subsequently flew combat missions in the Pacific. In his later years he emerged as a spokesman on conservation issues.

Lindbergh, Charles Augustus, 1859-1924 1859-1924, American Congressman (1907-17), b. Sweden; father of Charles Augustus Lindbergh. He was brought to Minnesota as an infant, and later practiced law in Little Falls, Minn. As a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, he consistently attacked the methods of large industrial trusts and sponsored various reforms but incurred vilification by his denunciation of war propaganda and war profiteering. His outspoken book Why Is Your Country at War? (1917, repr. 1934) was suppressed and contributed to his defeat (1918) as candidate of the Nonpartisan League for the post of governor of Minnesota.
