Charles Lindbergh biography
Born February 4, 1902, in Detroit, Michigan, Charles Lindbergh grew up on a farm near Little Falls, Minnesota the son of a lawyer/U.S. Congressman. Charles showed exceptional mechanical ability, even as a child, and was encouraged to attend college and make the most of his talent. After graduating high school, Charles stayed on to work at the family farm for two years before enrolling in the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he would study Engineering. Full of a passion for airplanes and the newly expanding field of aviation, Charles Lindbergh left college after two years to attend the Lincoln Flight School in Nebraska. Once graduated, Lindbergh would spend the next few years performing daredevil stunts and county fairs and carnivals. On the advice of his father, Charles enlisted in the United States Army in 1924, to be trained as an Army Air Service Reserve pilot. Graduating the following year, Charles Lindbergh was named the best pilot in his class. bodyOffer(384) In 1919, Raymond Orteig, a New York City hotel owner, offered $25,000 to the first aviator who could fly nonstop from New York to Paris. Several pilots tried and failed. But in 1927, with a 220-horsepower Wright Whirlwind plane that he named, The Spirit of St. Louis, Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field in New York, and became the first pilot in the world to make a solo, nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Lindbergh flew some 3600 miles in just over 33-hours and proudly collected his $25,000 reward in front of cheering fans in Paris. The press nicknamed Mr. Lindbergh "Lucky Lindy" and the "Lone Eagle" and he instantly became a hero.

In 1938-39 he advocated U.S. neutrality in a European war; when his speeches were branded as pro-Nazi, he resigned his commission, but later flew combat missions in the Pacific. His wife, Anne Spencer Morrow Lindbergh, 1906-, b. Englewood, N.J., is a writer. Her works include North to the Orient (1935) and Listen! the Wind (1938), accounts of flights made with her husband; Gift from the Sea (1955), a poetic study of women's problems; and volumes of diaries and letters." Lindbergh was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was a barnstorming pilot before attending the US Army School in Texas 1924 and becoming an officer in the Army Air Service Reserve 1925. His son Charles Jr (1930-1932) was kidnapped and killed; ensuing legislation against kidnapping was called the Lindbergh Act. Upon his return to the United States he received an unprecedented welcome, was promoted to colonel, and made a nationwide tour to foster popular interest in aviation. Lindbergh married (1929) Anne Morrow (see below), the daughter of the U.S. ambassador to Mexico Dwight W. Morrow , and with her made several long flights. After the kidnapping and death of their son (see Hauptmann, Bruno Richard ) in 1932, the Lindberghs moved (1935) to England. In 1936, Lindbergh collaborated with Alexis Carrel on the invention of a perfusion pump that could maintain organs outside the body. After inspecting (1938) European air forces, Lindbergh became convinced of German air superiority; he favored a U.S. policy of isolationism with respect to the struggle threatening in Europe. He returned (1939) to the United States and made antiwar speeches for the America First Committee. When these were branded pro-Nazi, he resigned his reserve commission and quit the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Upon U.S. entry into the war Lindbergh offered his services to the air force; he subsequently flew combat missions in the Pacific. In his later years he emerged as a spokesman on conservation issues.

Smithsonian Institution, National Air and Space Museum, Milestones of Flight Gallery O n May 21, 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh completed the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight in history, flying his Ryan NYP "Spirit of St. Louis" 5,810 kilometers (3,610 miles) between Roosevelt Field on Long Island, New York, and Paris, France, in 33 hours, 30 minutes. With this flight, Lindbergh won the $25,000 prize offered by New York hotel owner Raymond Orteig to the first aviator to fly an aircraft directly across the Atlantic between New York and Paris. When he landed at Le Bourget Field in Paris, Lindbergh became a world hero who would remain in the public eye for decades. T he aftermath of the flight was the "Lindbergh boom" in aviation: aircraft industry stocks rose in value and interest in flying skyrocketed. Lindbergh's subsequent U.S. tour in the "Spirit of St. Louis" demonstrated the potential of the airplane as a safe, reliable mode of transportation. Following the U.S. tour, Lindbergh took the aircraft on a goodwill flight to Central and South America, where flags of the countries he visited were painted on the cowling. "S pirit of St. Louis" was named in honor of Lindbergh's supporters in St. Louis, Missouri, who paid for the aircraft. "NYP" is an acronym for "New York-Paris," the object of the flight.

An expert whose research specialty is American aviator Charles Lindbergh recommends these sources.
Six Superlative Sources
Berg, A. Scott. Lindbergh. G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1998. Definitive biography and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for biography. First biography written with unfettered access to the Lindberghs' private papers at Yale University Library. Lindbergh, Charles A. The Spirit of St. Louis. Charles Scribner's Sons, 1953. Won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1954 and is still the best account of Lindbergh's historic transatlantic flight, as well as the events leading up to and surrounding it. Lindbergh, Charles A. An Autobiography of Values. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1976. Edited by Judith Schiff and William Jovanovich from Lindbergh's manuscript and published after his death. Best reflection of Lindbergh's philosophy of balance concerning science, individual life, and human values. Luckett, Perry D. Charles A. Lindbergh: A Bio-Bibliography. Greenwood Press, 1986. Excellent starting point for students, because it includes a brief biography, an assessment of Lindbergh's place in American society and popular culture, a thorough bibliographical essay (though dated to 1984), and a chronology of Lindbergh's life. Lots of information in a short, accessible space. Ross, Walter S. The Last Hero: Charles A. Lindbergh. 2nd edition. Harper and Row, 1976. Before Berg's biography, this was the best book about Lindbergh's life. Balanced approach points out Lindbergh's shortcomings while recognizing his remarkable character and achievements.
