HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Lindbergh, Charles A(ugustus) US aviator. He made the first solo nonstop flight in 33.5 hours across the Atlantic (Roosevelt Field, Long Island, New York, to Le Bourget airport, Paris) in 1927 in the Spirit of St Louis , a Ryan monoplane designed by him. Lindbergh was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was a barnstorming pilot before attending the US Army School in Texas 1924 and becoming an officer in the Army Air Service Reserve 1925. Learning that Raymond B Orteig had offered a prize of 25,000 for the person who first made a nonstop air flight between New York and Paris, he appealed to some St Louis businessmen who agreed to finance him.

Charles Augustus Lindbergh
While growing up on a farm near the small midwestern town of Twin Falls, Minnesota, Charles Lindbergh was fascinated by speed. As a teenager, the thin, socially awkward young man acquired a motorcycle, which he raced around town, testing the limits of his courageand honing his skills at the controls of a speeding machine. Two years after enrolling at the University of Wisconsin to study mechanical engineering, the 20-year-old Lindbergh dropped out and began a life of aerial adventure. He toured the country with a veteran barnstormer who taught him how to wingwalk and parachute jump. In 1923, Lindbergh borrowed $500 from his father and bought a World War One surplus Curtiss "

Lindy Comes to Town
Lindbergh, Charles A. (1902 - 1974) Charles Augustus Lindbergh was born on February 4, 1902 in Detroit, Michigan. He was raised in Little Falls, Minnesota. His father, Charles Augustus Lindbergh Sr., was Republican congressman for the Sixth District of Minnesota 1907-1917. He learned to fly in 1922, and spent the next years honing his skills as an airmail pilot and barnstormer. In late 1926, Lindbergh developed an interest in pursuing the Ortieg Prize, a $25,000 award offered to the first person to cross the Atlantic in a heavier then air land or water aircraft alone. A coalition of St. Louis businessmen became involved, and skilled public relations were employed to promote the flight. A specially designed aircraft (to be named "The Spirit of St. Louis") was commissioned from the Ryan Aircraft Company of San Diego, California. Lindbergh left Roosevelt Field, Long Island at 7:52am on May 20, 1927. He set down in Paris at Le Bourget Airport 33 1/2 hours later (10:22pm. May 21). It was dark when he landed, the group of witnesses was relatively small, and no photographs taken of the event. A few days later, when he arrived at Croydon Airport, London, the crowds and the photographers were waiting. He became "the lone eagle" in the eyes of the world, and an international hero and celebrity. In 1929 he married Anne Spencer Morrow, the daughter of U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Dwight Morrow.

The impact of his accomplishment was immediate and immense. When he landed at Le Bourge airport a crowd estimated at over 100,000 thronged the young pilot and his plane. Overwhelmed by the reception, Lindbergh sought refuge in the residence of the American ambassador to France. His thought was to rest a few days and then do some sightseeing through Europe. However, forces beyond his control were soon to overtake Lindbergh. His feat propelled him instantly to the status of a cultural icon and his life would never be the same. When he heard the news of Lindbergh's successful flight, President Coolidge asked that he be returned to America to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross. The navy dispatched a destroyer to France to pick up Lindbergh and transport him back across the Atlantic. Initially, Lindbergh was reluctant to return so quickly but soon realized he had little choice but to follow the President's plan. So, Lindbergh returned to America and a reception unprecedented in our history. New York City honored him with the largest ticker tape parade ever. Then, it was on to Washington and more awards and ceremonies. This recording is an excerpt of a speech Lindbergh gave upon his arrival in New York. Read Lindbergh's account of his flight.

Summary
Each year, The Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation provides grants of up to $10,580 (a symbolic amount representing the cost of the "Spirit of St. Louis") to men and women whose individual initiative and work in a wide spectrum of disciplines furthers the Lindberghs' vision of a balance between the advance of technology and the preservation of the natural/human environment. To date, 225 men and women in the United States and abroad have received more than $2.1 million to support their work. "The concept of a technology/nature balance, in which Charles and Anne Lindbergh so firmly believed, is now coming to the forefront as the answer to some of our global problems," said Clare Hallward, Chairman of the Lindbergh Foundation Grants Selection Committee. "The projects of our grant recipients have, since 1978, made significant contributions to such a balance. Because of the standards employed by the Foundation's grants program, it has earned international credibility which enables many Lindbergh Grant recipients to secure additional funding to continue their important work." The value of the Lindbergh Grants program as a provider of seed money and credibility for pilot projects that subsequently receive larger sums from other sources to continue and expand the work has again been confirmed. Seventy-four percent of Lindbergh Grant recipients responding to a recent survey by the Foundation said they had received additional funding for their research or educational project earlier supported by a Lindbergh Grant, with 34% receiving funds ranging from $50,001 up to $500,000 in supplementary support.
