    James A. Lovell, Jr.
Geboren am 25. März 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio
    Verheiratet, 4 Kinder

    James Lovell and Frank Borman
In December 1965, Gemini VII astronauts James Lovell and Frank Borman also saw a UFO during their second orbit of their record-breaking 14 day flight. Borman reported that he saw an unidentified spacecraft some distance from their capsule. Gemini Control, at Cape Kennedy told him that he was seeing the final stage of their own Titan booster rocket. Borman confirmed that he could see the booster rocket all right, but that he could also see something completely different.
During James Lovell's flight on Gemini 7:
Lovell: BOGEY AT 10 O'CLOCK HIGH. Capcom: This is Houston. Say again 7. Lovell: SAID WE HAVE A BOGEY AT 10 O'CLOCK HIGH. Capcom: Roger.... (at this point the live broadcast of the conversation is interrupted by Capcom) Capcom: Gemini 7, is that the booster or is that an actual sighting ? Lovell: WE HAVE SEVERAL...ACTUAL SIGHTING. Capcom: ...Estimated distance or size ? Lovell: WE ALSO HAVE THE BOOSTER IN SIGHT...
Click here to hear a recording of the above conversation
Lovell is reported to have taken some magnificent photographs of two mushroom shaped UFO's on December 4. The pictures seem to show the glow of a propulsion system on the underside. The pictures were taken at a range of several hundred yards. Some believe this picture to be a blatant forgery accomplished by airbrushing a picture of light reflecting off the nose of the spacecraft.

June 26, 2001 10:00 AM Captain James Lovell Thank you Chairman Levin and Members of the Subcommittee for the opportunity to speak to you today. In my professional life I am President of Lovell Communications, a business devoted to disseminating information about the United States Space Program, but you probably know me as a former member of the space program and the commander of the Apollo 13 mission. What you may not know is that I am also the father of a grown son, Jeff, with juvenile diabetes. When my son called at the age of 26 to tell me that he had been diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, he began by saying, "Houston, we have a problem." At the time I found it ironic that he would draw a parallel between my career at NASA, especially the Apollo 13 mission, and his diagnosis with diabetes. My training at NASA gave me confidence in my ability to overcome any obstacles that stood before my goals. When an explosion depleted our oxygen supply on the Apollo 13 mission, forcing us to abort our voyage to the moon and improvise a plan to get home, I never doubted that we would be successful, despite the seeming impossibility of our task.

This spacesuit was worn by James A. Lovell, Jr. during the final Gemini mission. The flight was launched on November 11, 1966 from Pad 19 at Cape Kennedy, and lasted almost 4 days.
Gemini 12 linked up with the Agena 12 target , which had been inserted into orbit 90 minutes earlier, and was the first U.S. mission to see a total eclipse.
The spacesuit was constructed by the David Clark Company, with the designation G-4-C.

The heroic Apollo 13 mission was launched to the Moon on April 11, 1970 on what was to have been the third manned lunar landing mission of the Apollo Program. Capturing the World's attention, this near tragic mission inspired the 1995 blockbuster movie Apollo 13 . The triumphant return of the crew to safety is considered by many to be among America's finest hours in space flight. Engineers on the ground and the astronaut crew of Apollo 13 worked to successfully bring a crippled spacecraft home from the Moon. This full color official Apollo 13 mission portrait of astronaut James A. Lovell is personally hand-signed by Apollo 13 commander James A. Lovell, the first man to complete four spaceflights and the first to make two space flights to the Moon. Astronaut Lovell first journeyed to the Moon in December 1968 as the command module pilot of Apollo 8. The Apollo 8 crew were the first humans to leave the bonds of Earth and travel to and orbit another celestial body. Available matted and framed with a historical plaque or unframed. The pinnacle of scientific exploration in the 20th Century was NASA's Apollo program. On Apollo 8, Astronauts Lovell, Borman, and Anders showed all of humanity how truly fragile and precious the Earth's environment is. The "Blue Marble in Space" remains one of the most enduring visions of the Apollo program. During the Apollo 13 mission, Captain Lovell and his crew captured the focus of the entire world. They illustrated the courage and daring that have been associated with exploration of unknown environments since the Voyages of Discovery crisscrossed the world. The James and Marilyn Lovell Center for Environmental Geography and Hazards Research recognizes the legacy of Jim Lovell's outstanding leadership in global exploration and environmental science and Marilyn Lovell's unwavering support of her husband and his extraordinary vision

Astronaut James A Lovell, Jr. was born March 25, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1952 and became a test pilot in 1958. In 1962, he was selected for astronaut training in the Gemini and Apollo programs. On December 21, 1968, Lovell, Borman and Anders became the first men to leave Earth's gravity and orbit the Moon. Apollo 8 gave us our first close-up view of the lunar surface and of the Moon's backside. Most significantly, Apollo 8 confirmed the technology that permitted succeeding crews to land on the Moon. In 1970, with Fred Haise, Jr., and John Swigert, Jr., he returned the crippled Apollo 13 safely to Earth after an in-flight emergency.

In recognition of their scientific and technological achievement as the first humans to circumnavigate the moon in December 1968. The pioneering flight of 147 hours covered a total distance of 590,000 miles and included ten orbits of the moon. "We sweated the burn into lunar orbit. If that burn was not correct we could have gone into all sorts of oddball orbits, none of them nice. When we committed ourselves to it we were really saying, 'Earth, we are forsaking you. We're going into the influence of the moon and if that engine doesn't work when we want to leave here, we are going to belong to the moon forever.'" James A. Lovell, Jr.

    James A. Lovell, Jr.
Mount Union College Academics Schooler Lecture Author: Administrator Publishing date: 07.23.2002 10:21 James A. Lovell, Jr., the commander of America's fifth moon launch, Apollo 13, presented the Schooler Lecture on Lovell, who, along with his crew, averted disaster during the 1970 mission, has had his tale recounted in print and most recently in the blockbuster movie "Apollo 13." His experiences as a NASA astronaut have been invaluable as he pursued his post-NASA days in the business communications field. A native of Cleveland, Lovell began his space career in 1962 as one of the group of nine astronauts selected by NASA. In 1965, he and Frank Borman were launched into space on the history-making Gemini 7 mission for the first rendezvous of two maneuverable spacecraft. Lovell is the first man to have gone to the moon twice and logged 715 hours in space. Since his retirement from the space program, he has been senior executive with Bay-Houston Towing, a diversified company involved in harbor and coast towing, and in the communications industry with Centel Corporation, one of the nation's largest communications companies. He now heads his own entity, Lovell Communications.
