Bill Maher (Jump to Al Franken) By Stephen Thompson An alarming percentage of Americans receive most of their news from late-night talk-show monologues, but Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect at least gives its audience a discussion of issues to go with the usual diet of snappy one-liners. Each night, Maher moderates a panel with four different celebrity guests, who debate a pre-set topic in front of a studio audience. It's a successful format he inventedand took to ABC following a popular run on Comedy Centralafter years of work as an actor and stand-up comedian. The Onion A.V. Club recently spoke to Maher about his political views, the upcoming election, acting, and his status as a good, honest person. The Onion: Should people vote? Bill Maher: "I would like to see a start made toward something alternative
in America, because I just can't imagine anything else where we would put up with having only two choices." O: What about choice? BM: Choice is a big one, but I don't see... Yeah, that's true. Bush could appoint...

4. Press - A Publication Of The Pennsylvania Newspaper Association

http://www.pnpa.com/publications/press/feb02/bill.htm
Maher bill provides the best chance to improve access By Bill Northrop, Sr., Observer-Reporter, Washington Pennsylvania legislators have the best opportunity in 45 years to help the citizens of Pennsylvania improve their access to their government records by supporting House Bill 2100. And citizens can help the legislators by urging them to vote for it. The bill amends the 1957 Right-to-Know Law (often less descriptively called the Open Records act), a law that has not been touched since then, not even to recognize the existence of computer generated and stored public records. Bill 2100 does that and more. "Whatever the difficulties and wherever
the credits lie, House Bill 2100 is a big step
in the right direction and complements nicely
the recently adopted House resolution that open
legislators expense accounts to some scrutiny."
- William Northrop, Sr.
For instance, government officials would not be able to deny a citizen access to certain records of their local or state governments because of their intended use. In fact, citizens would not have to say why the records are needed, nor, in many cases, provide their name or address. Records would have to be produced within five business days, and if access were to be denied a written explanation would have to be given along with the proper court case citation. Nor could the government unit charge unreasonable or excessive costs to make copies.

By Stephen Thompson Bill Maher is, of course, the host of the ABC late-night talk show Politically Incorrect, as well as the author of two books, Does Anybody Have A Problem With That? and True Story. On top of those projects, he's done movies ( Pizza Man House 2: The Second Story ) and made countless stand-up appearances. The Onion recently spoke to Maher about his show, his material and his stand-up career. The Onion: You've written a couple of books, and you've got your own late-night TV show. Why go back to stand-up? Bill Maher: Well, I never really left it. The last special I did on HBO, which I guess was my fourth, was called The Golden Goose Special because stand-up, for me and others who have shows, is the Golden Goose. It's the thing from which everything comes. So I've never quit, and it's a little harder now with this demanding schedule, but whenever I can, I still like to do it. It's still the most rewarding, the most immediate, and in a lot of ways the most real. It's just you and the audience; they're the director. O: Because you do a show called Politically Incorrect , do people expect you to mostly just cover political material?

March 4, 1997 Harris: Joining us now is an old friend, Bill Maher. We've known Bill since he worked in the comedy clubs making the trip from city to city just doing standup. Then he worked his way into doing a gig on Comedy Central and a couple of sitcoms and a couple of movies and now of course it's the big time with Politically Incorrect on weeknights, late night, on ABC. He was here in town on Sunday night to do the Presidential Gala over at Ford's Theater and joins us here now. Good morning, Bill. Maher: Hey, how are you? Harris: Good, how are you? How did the gig go Sunday night? Maher: Actually, surprisingly well. I was a ball of nerves but I can't explain it. They were actually a good crowd. I was expecting a very staid, sort of corporate, politically very correct crowd and they really went with it. Harris: Were Bill and Hillary sitting there right in the front row? Maher: Right in the front row, and my biggest laugh was I was nervous coming here and so the director of Ford's Theater said "You know you should just treat it like a comedy club." So I said to Clinton, "So, where you from? [laughs] So what do you do there, sir? [laughs]" So they seemed to like it, it was good.

my new book When You Ride Alone, You Ride With bin Laden, is a sincere attemptto point citizens in directions where they can actually help.” bill maher
http://www.safesearching.com/ridealone/home.shtml
“For over a year now, the American government has been telling its citizens that we're in a war, but apparently one we can win so easily that the homefront is asked to do little more than shop, eat out and travel. In earlier wars the government wasn't afraid to ask its citizens - often through the medium of the wartime propaganda poster - to sacrifice: to curb travel, plant a victory garden, save tin, not let loose lips sink ships, etc. Our pandering governments of today wouldn’t dream of creating posters informing Americans of what they could actually do to help, so I decided I would.
The thirty-three posters you'll see in my new book "When You Ride Alone, You Ride With bin Laden," is a sincere attempt to point citizens in directions where they can actually help.”

Lite Night with Bill Maher The host of "Politically Incorrect" serves up warmed-over, celebrity-enhanced pop politics to an uninformed audience. Just the way America likes it. by Ana Marie Cox photo by E.J. Camp A s the lights go down for a taping of Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect" in Los Angeles, co-executive producer Scott Carter lays out the ground rules for the audience: When the signs say "laughter," laugh. When they say "applause," applaud. Leaving the stage, he reminds the audience members of their duty: "Let's try and fake it for the people at home." It's an appropriately cynical introduction to the world of "Politically Incorrect." At the center of this galaxy of stars is the 42-year-old Maher, a Jersey boy who, before he became a vaudeville pundit, was a moderately successful stand-up comic and B-movie actor (his film credits include Ratboy and D.C.
