Martin was first heard with Bill Monroe on classics such as "Uncle Pen", "Walking To Jerusalem", and the incredible "On And On", available on Monroe's Country Music Hall Of Fame Series disc (MCA). "I was paintin' machinery in a factory in Morristown, TN, and I was playin' on WCPK from 4:30 to 5 every evening. I got fired on my job for singin' too much, and I cussed out the foreman for firin' me. When I went back after my clothes, I seen him on the street, and told him, 'Listen in on Saturday night, 'cause I'm singin' with Bill Monroe on the Grand Ol' Opry. "I'd been playin' on the radio a couple years, but all my life I'd been listenin' to the Opry, and I had always wanted to see Bill Monroe. "I had sang with my stepfather at churches and funerals and learnt all the parts in the quartet lead, baritone, tenor, and bass. When I went down to try out for Bill, I told him that I knew all the parts, but that I didn't sing tenor as well as he could." "He took me in there and asked Mac Wiseman to let me have the guitar, which was the one that Lester Flatt had played with Bill. It was Bill's Martin D-28 herringbone [guitar]. So I sang one with Bill, then I played a solo 'Poor Ellen Smith', then I played 'Orange Blossom Special' with [fiddler] Chubby Wise. Bill asked Chubby what he thought, and Chubby said, 'Lordy, I thought Lester Flatt had it, but this boy's flat got it."

Up Jimmy Martin (Singer, Mandolin, Guitar) Jimmy Martin (Sneedville, Tenn.) never expected to speak to Bill Monroe, let alone audition for his band, the Blue Grass Boys, when Martin attended a Grand Ole Opry appearance of his hero in 1949. Monroe offered a position more desirable than the house painting that the twenty-two year-old-Martin had been doing; Martin had recently been fired for singing on the job. He stayed with the group for three years before starting his own group the Sunny Mountain Boys, which has included over the years such notable bluegrass innovators as the Osborne Brothers , J.D. Crowe and Doyle Lawson . Martin recorded many hit singles for the Decca label throughout the sixties and early seventies and became a regular on the festival circuit. Martin, proclaimed the "King of Bluegrass," was known for the many novelty songs he performed, but also for the more serious material written by himself and mandolin player, Paul (Humphrey) Williams, including "Mr. Engineer," "This World Is Not My Home" and "My Walking Shoes." One of the honors of his career was an appearance on the classic Nitty Gritty Dirt Band album "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" with such notables as Doc Watson and Mother Maybelle Carter.

By racking up more international victories than any other player in the world? How about by parlaying his judo skill into fame and fortune, making his name a household word? Well, in any of these cases, no Americans would qualify. The USA has never won in Olympic judo or in the World Judo Championships. American players are relatively inexperienced on the international circuit as well, with our top competitors playing in (and therefore winning) only a fraction as many tournaments abroad as the better half of, say, the Japanese, the Soviet, or even the French judo teams. On top of all thatand in partial explanation of itjudo is almost ignored in this country. The sport went through its heyday here in the late 1950s and early 1960s, before being eclipsed in the popular imagination, first by karate, then by kung fu. Now it is a rare martial artist in the U.S. who practices judo, though on a world scale the "gentle way" is still just about the most widespread martial art there is. The situation in this country was not ameliorated the old system of choosing Olympic competitors. Under the old, single-event trial system, the U.S. often didn't send its best performers to compete internationally. A member of our Olympic team in 1972, for example, had never won the Southern California Championships, though he lived and competed in the Los Angeles area, and had only placed (never won) in his division of the Nationals. In 1976, one of our Olympic representatives had never so much as placed in the National Judo Championships. So no wonder we've been trounced in the Olympics. And no wonder that a lot of younger athletes are studying martial arts in which the U.S. lays a more credible claim to being the best.

Though his voice is not what it once was, he still has that presence, that star quality, and he did not disappoint as he exhibited many of the mannerisms we associate with The King of Bluegrass during his two songs. His eyes were big and flashing, he had huge rhinestones covering his suit lapels; why he even beat Bobby Osborne's rhinestone-studded hatband. And it's hard to out-rhinestone Bobby.
