SYLVESTER McCOY
The seventh Doctor Who was Sylvester McCoy, Doctor Who was about. At this point, the series also started to imply that the Doctor wasn't really a Time Lord at all, but some kind of superhero - an ancient entity with some sort of mission to defend the universe, rather than the well meaning gentleman adventurer of previous incarnations. Part of the appeal of the Doctor for me was that he was an altruistic hero. He'd put his life on the line to help people he had barely met, just because he believed in doing what was right. Once you take that away, and give the Doctor some sort of destiny to protect the universe, then you destroy the point of Doctor Who, and it's no longer the same programme. And yet incredibly, there are large numbers of fans who love McCoy's Doctor, and his episodes. They're usually the same fans who despise Jon Pertwee, and there's probably some significance in that. For me, the destruction of the Doctor's character damaged the show irreparably. Previously, I've criticised the lack of moral direction in the Colin Baker episodes - yet we see the McCoy Doctor committing acts of wanton genocide, and large numbers of fans seems to think that's perfectly acceptable. I find it detestable. I should note that Doctor Who was cancelled after McCoy's third season, and I wasn't especially upset.

After Colin's spell there was too much to be done to save Doctor Who from the chop although Sylvester tried his best at rescuing it. It was only in his final season that he was really allowed to take the character in the direction he wanted it to go and in my mind that last season was a good one! Sylvester was born in 1943 at Dunoon in Scotland Sylvester revived his role in 1996 with a small role in the film starring Paul McGann.

SYLVESTER McCOY The BBC's seventh Doctor took time out the other day to talk to Bill Baggs about working on the new Doctor Who story, The Sirens of Time. The Sirens of Time was your third opportunity (after Airzone and Zero Imperative ) to work with other Doctors. What was different about the experience this time around?
It was certainly good fun working with the others. Because this time it was Doctor Who, I think I discovered more about my Doctor with all the bouncing off the other Doctors. And there was certainly a tremendous feeling of excitement of the whole experience of having the three of us together again. Giving us an episode each and then bringing us together worked well. That shouldn't necessarily be a rule for all scripts, but in this case it worked that way very well. There are, I suupose, certain - um - vanities that producers have to worry about, so giving each of us a quarter of the story was probably quite sensible. It was fun to do one all tangled all the way through. What do you make of the other Doctors?

Second Doctor . Silly and sillier. However, with the beginning of his second season as the Doctor, McCoy found a new side to the Doctor a dark side. The Doctor became a manipulator, setting up villains at time and place of his choosing so he could defeat them, or using his companions as a tool to get the edge on the enemy. more than we thought he was. The Doctor had become an emigma: a mystery wrapped in a riddle. The dark side of the Doctor was explored further in the New Adventure Who knows what that would have been like. plays Lieutenant Bowers
Born in Argyll, Sylvester McCoy can claim to be a Highlander, despite having an Irish mother and an English father. After a variety of jobs he only turned to acting at the age of twenty-seven. He began in 1971, in Ken Campbell's Roadshow, touring all round Europe and Israel. Back in the U.K. McCoy joined the Theatre Royal at Stratford East under Joan Littlewood. He then spent two years at the NottinghamPlayhouse before signing for 'Vision On', the award winning children's television programme originally designed for the deaf. His talent for visual comedy led to further work in children's television, and an expanding range of roles. His debut in opera was at the Welsh National where he played Puck in 'A midsummer Night's Dream'. A serious dramatic role in Dario Fo's long running West End play 'Can't Pay, Won't Pay' brought him "two and a half years without a day off", before he changed tack again in 'The Pirates of Penzance' at the theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1982. Since completing the role of Bowers in 'The Last Place on Earth', Syvester McCoy has played Buster Keaton at the Nottingham Playhouse, a part written especially for him, and appeared in 'Dramarama' for TVS. He is currently rehearsing in a 6-part BBC TV series 'Eureka'. [1985] Back to Publicity Kit index

Sylvester McCoy Sylvester McCoy played the seventh Doctor and was the last Doctor until the 1997 film. This Doctor possessed all of the characteristics of all of the other regenerations of the Doctor. This Doctor was most like the second Doctor in his ways, but he had a friendly side (like the forth Doctor) and he also had a bad tempered side (like the first Doctor). This Doctor foiled his enemies by out witting them and making them thing that he was more foolhardy than he was. In this incarnation, the Doctor again met, the Daleks, Davros, Cybermen, the Rani, the Brigadier and many new enemies (such as the Kandy Man and the killer clowns from the Greatest Show in the Galaxy). Last updated December 4, 1998 This site is devoted to the actor, Sylvester McCoy, if you hadn't guessed by the name of the place. Ever since I first saw Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor, I've wanted to know more about him, and more about his career. After learning, I've found that the first role I saw him in is still my favorite. The seventh Doctor is my favorite, and he's just so cool because of his combination of drama and comedy. From his panama hat, which was part of his own personality, to his personality itself, the man is great. No other Doctor, or actor, can ever quite capture the magic the this man has and share it with others in the same style. And, of course, he's just damned fun to watch.
