69. Langdon Jones - A Review Of The BBC2 Adaptation Of Gormenghast
neve mcintosh made a valiant effort to portray Fuchsia, and was certainly responsiblefor some of the most emotional moments of the series, but one has to ask
http://www.langdonjones.com/gormenreview.html
GORMENGHAST
- the visual versus the verbal?
Those abroad who have not seen the television adaptation of the first two books of Mervyn Peake’s trilogy should be aware that this review gives away important plot developments of the mini-series. So if you wish to see it without preconceptions, it might be wise to read no further! I have long observed that we seem to be moving from a verbal into a visual age. This is noticeable particularly in the world of television advertising, where it is possible to watch thousands of pounds of visual ingenuity, perfect in its beauty, which is accompanied by a fatuous, unpoetic, ungrammatical commentary that might have been written by a ten-year-old. Or at least, a ten-year-old thirty years ago. Similarly it’s possible to buy a computer game which has had thousands of man-hours spent on programming the graphics, while its messages to the user are full of misspellings and dreadful grammatical errors. So it is strange that now, that wonderful verbal utterance, Gormenghast, those books of hundreds of thousands of words by Mervyn Peake, every word of them polished and perfectly placed, have finally been adapted for television, half a century after they were finished and after such a long period of general neglect. Similarly, the cast were modelled as far as possible on Peake’s descriptions and on his own drawings, which littered the manuscripts of the books. Using human beings it was not possible to make the characters conform exactly to what Peake described, but in general they came as close as it was possible to be. Fiona Shaw's Irma Prunesquallor in particular, with her gyrating neck and her grimacing lips, both of which seemed to have a life of their own, was so close that she almost seemed perfectly to match Peake’s grotesque portrait.

Studios, West Los Angeles.
Written by Mel Lambert in May 1998 During that time, the studio has re-invented itself several times. Set up in 1968 as the creative vision of musician and technical innovator Geordie Hormel a composer whose credits include music for a range of TV shows, ranging from "Lassie," "Ozzie & Harriet," "Rin Tin Tin" and "Huckleberry Hound" to "The Untouchables" and "The Fugitive" by 1972 The Village had become one of LA's top studios, hosting such talents as Steely Dan, Allman Brothers, Joni Mitchell plus the Sly and the Family Stone. "We consider that the secret to The Village's longevity," says Jeff Greenberg, Chief Executive Officer, "lies in a unique combination of creativity, top-notch client service, and constant technical innovation." Greenberg has a wealth of music-business experience, including concert promotion for The Nederlander Organization, artist management and as an agent at ICM. "We always refer back to Geordie Hormel's original creed," he says, "which was an uncompromising emphasis on Client Services artists need to be taken care of during this often stress-laden process of making music. Our unswerving philosophy the 'heart' of The Village, if you like has always been: 'Whatever it takes.' "In the control room, the engineer and producer are capturing that Golden Moment during a performance and then relaying it to the public in that respect, they are also 'Artists,' in the true sense of the word. It is our role to ensure that nothing deflects them from that role, and upsets the creative studio/control room environment. Our 24-hour technical support is second to none."

Gormenghast
An enormous castle rots from within, while a scheming kitchen boy plots his rise to power Gormenghast
Starring Jonathan Rhys Myers, Christopher Lee, Neve McIntosh, Ian Richardson, John Sessions and Stephen Fry
Written by Malcolm McKay
Directed by Andy Wilson BBC, Warner Home Video 240 minutes MSRP: $34.98 By John Sullivan his four-episode BBC miniseries adapts the first two books of Mervyn Peake's classic trilogy of Gormenghast , a sprawling castle the size of a small city. Gormenghast is shot through with secret passages and moldy, forgotten wings. It is encrusted with 77 generations of precedent and long-desiccated ritual. The sheer inertia of the place and its traditions has overwhelmed everyone within it. Even the ruling Groan family have become little more than overdressed cogs in the great, wheezing machine that is Gormenghast itself. But soon after the birth of Titus Groan, 77th Earl of Gormenghast, things begin to go horribly wrong in the great castle, all driven by the young kitchen boy, Steerpike (Myers). Unlike everyone else in Gormenghast, Steerpike refuses to accept the position handed to him by tradition and circumstance. Steerpike is clever. Steerpike is charming. Steerpike is utterly ruthless. Steerpike refuses to waste his life in the kitchens when these qualities could take him so much farther.

UK Vogue Magazine - November, 2002.
    Mystery Players.
Richard E. Grant, Matt Day, Geraldine James, Richard Roxburgh, Ian Hart and Neve McIntosh.
It may be Sherlock Holmes, but don't expect traditional deerstalkers in this Christmas' BBC adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic thriller The Hound of the Baskervilles. Instead, the mystery of Dartmoor's legendary hell-hound will involve new fangled animatronics and a younger, more athletic looking Holmes and Watson. The former is played by the smouldering Richard Roxburgh, best known for his role as the evil Duke in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge, and the latter by Ian Hart. Richard E. Grant is the archeologist Stapleton; Matt Day, Sir Henry Baskerville. A regal Geraldine plays Mrs Mortimer, and newcomer Neve McIntosh bewitches with her cool beauty as Miss Stapleton.

Thursday, January 16, 2003 Alas, this 'Hound' basks in mediocrity By JOHN LEVESQUE
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER TELEVISION CRITIC Think of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and it's hard not to think of atmosphere. TV REVIEW THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES WHAT: Two-hour Sherlock Holmes movie based on the Arthur Conan Doyle novel
CAST: Richard Roxburgh, Ian Hart, Matt Day, Richard E. Grant, Neve McIntosh, John Nettles, Geraldine James, Ron Cook, Liza Tarbuck
WHEN / WHERE: Sunday at 9 p.m., KCTS/9; available on video and DVD Saturday
    RATING: TV-PG
GRADE: B- Darkness. Dampness. Mud and mire. Fog and bog. Sherlock Holmes' deeds of deduction actually pale in comparison, secondary to the legend of a ghostly hound prowling the misty moor. Try as it might, the new BBC/"Masterpiece Theatre" version of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic never delivers the melancholy miasma. The rain looks phony, the fog looks smoky and the darkness looks more like 3 o'clock on a winter afternoon.

    (A Review)
BBC 2000. Dir. Andy Wilson; prod. Estelle Daniel; scr. Malcolm McKay (from the novels by Mervyn Peake). With Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Steerpike), Christopher Lee (Flay), Celia Imrie (Gertrude), John Sessions (Prunesquallor), Neve McIntosh (Fuchsia), Warren Mitchell (Barquentine), Fiona Shaw (Irma), June Brown (Nannie Slagg), Stephen Fry (Bellgrove), Ian Richardson (Lord Groan), Richard Griffiths (Swelter), Cameron Powrie (Titus at 12), Andrew Robertson (Titus at 17), Zoe Wanamaker (Clarice), Lynsey Baxter (Cora), et al. "She seemed too much alive - alive in a different sense from the glittering and icy vitality of her companion - too much alive in the way that love like an earthquake or some natural and sinless force, is incompatible with a neat and formal world. However quietly she sat back in her chair, her black hair about her shoulders, she was potentially disruptive." Mervyn Peake, Gormenghast (Chapter 56; the image, of Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Steerpike, is the cover of the 1999 Vintage edition). Note: this review assumes familiarity with the series, the novels, or both; i.e. it's full of spoilers. It is also at times irreverent. It was written in September 2000.
