AT THE WEST REGIONAL: Mercer, Prickett close in on Wildcats' milestones
(c) 1997 Associated Press SAN JOSE, Calif. (Mar 23, 1997 - 00:19 EST) With his 21 points Saturday against Utah in the West Regional final, Ron Mercer pulled within 19 points of becoming the 43rd player in Kentucky history to score 1,000 points. If he reaches that mark next weekend at the Final Four, Mercer will become the 11th player in Wildcat history to score 1,000 points in just two seasons. Mercer already has announced he'll leave Kentucky after this season and make himself eligible for the NBA draft. Rex Chapman was the last Wildcat player to score 1,000 points in two seasons, scoring 1,073 points before leaving Kentucky in 1988. Jared Prickett also is closing in on 1,000 career points for the Wildcats. The senior needs 15 points to reach that mark. PERFECT AT THE LINE: Utah's Keith Van Horn made the last 32 free throws of his college career, including a 4-for-4 performance against Kentucky in Saturday's West Regional final. Van Horn, an All-America forward, last missed a free throw March 1 against New Mexico.

Consonant problems at root of INCO pullout
Stalled negotiations over the Voisey's Bay mineral deposit and last week's layoffs at INCO's branch office in St. John's were caused by imaginary heavy accents within the Newfoundland cabinet, The Confederate has learned. The ongoing impasse is not the result of a hard-bargaining standoff between INCO executives and Newfoundland Premier Brine Tobin, but rather was caused by a misunderstanding involving consonants. The mixup started as a typo on a fax sent during preliminary talks about the nickel mine with the province, INCO spokesman Ian Bennett said during an exclusive interview. "Right from the start we were a little surprised by Newfoundland's unorthodox demand," said Bennett. "We had always heard you people had the highest rate of home ownership in the country. But if your premier was insisting, then what odds to us if you wanted us to build it in Labrador or Argentia. "We did think there would be more need for it in St. John's, but we figured we may as well mind our own business." The mixup came to light during the last round of negotiations, when Tobin began ranting about the 800 jobs that would be created when the company fulfilled its end of the bargain.

The MTV video awards
first appearance. September 1999
A sad appearance that exploited Tom and his talents for the new bosses at MTV. When the MTV awards started, it stated that Tom would be on. It didnt say that Tom would be peddling 50 cent calls to vote for a bunch of bands that are hand picked by MTV to begin with. 50 cents a call to vote? thats 50 cents American! Why would anyone want to help vote for something thats already set? Why would Tom agree to do it.. Probably to attract new fans and to keep his present job. I dont know the ins and outs.. Im just stating my opinion on the issue.. though I dont have all the facts. Tom (dressed as ScubaHood) was LIVE outside the award show.. playing in the fountain, and then reading off the who to vote for, how to vote, etc. There were 3 more bits of Tom doing this, one involved a car, and something else. The show was SO bad that I couldnt bother to stick around to tape the bits. Why do I care that fatboy slim won the best video award for what looks like handycam footage. Why would I want to see TLC perform "live" to their own voices.. same with Titney Spears and N'syck. Ok maybe I did watch the show. The real reason I didnt tape any was because I have bad luck.. and each time I flipped , chances are I missed them. back to the top SuperStar: a Much Music special

Why Should Americans Care? (or Can rick mercer Get Anymore Desperate?). Go ahead, ask me. A Chinese rick mercer would doubtless have a field day with me.
http://www.pulpanddagger.com/movies/essay_three.html
A Canadian film editorial brought to you by Why Should Americans Care? (or Can Rick Mercer Get Anymore Desperate?) And therein lies the rub. The joke about Talking to Americans is not that the Americans know so little about Canadians...it's that Canadians care so darn much. And care they do aparently Talking to Americans was watched by almost 3 million people in Canada (to put that in perspective, most English language Canadian-made TV series don't even get 1 million viewers). Yet the only reason Canadians are shocked that Americans are ignorant of them is because so many Canadians (particularly those in the entertainment and media industries) are obsessive, even fetishistic, in their interest in the United States. Instead of seeing their American fixation as unhealthy, many Canadians see American ignorance as an amusing geek show they're appalled that most Americans can live their lives, happily, contentedly, knowing very little about Canada. How can that be? Canadians ask in horror. Like a stalker who can't believe the object of his affection doesn't love him, many Canadians are shocked that most Americans don't give Canada any great thought at all. Don't get me wrong, I can take umbrage at the short shrift Canada receives in America and, indeed, globally, and I'll probably cover that in a later column. Most Canadians have heard stories reflecting American ignorance. Some stories are amusing (eg: tourists arriving in the middle of a sweltering summer with snow skies, wondering where the snow is) some more unsettling (eg: American bigots arriving in what they believed to be a "white" nation, and shocked to discover Canada is as multi-racial as the United States).

The Suzette Couture Story
by Marc Glassman
Suzette Couture is Canada's-and probably the United States'-reigning monarch of melodrama and docudrama. On the set of her television series The City , one of the top writers of miniseries and MOWs bemoans the state of longform drama in Canada. "There's so little longform being done in this country, I think it's shocking." Couture is concerned Canadian television is drifting away from the challenging dramas that galvanized audiences and established her career in the 1980s. It's ironic, then, that she and her husband and partner Pierre Sarrazin are the executive producers and the main writers on CTV's The City . But she hasn't walked away from longform altogether: she wrote The Sheldon Kennedy Story , the tale of the sexually abused hockey player, set to air this fall. And her mini-series, Jesus , is slated for broadcast internationally next year. The former comic actor recalls the days when Canadian drama was a turn off for many people, including her parents. "I grew up with a father who held the remote or ran back and forth to the TV in pre-remote days to switch off anything that was Canadian," she says. "But then there were those watershed productions like
