The Telegoons
I happen to know from the old days how involved you’ve been with music. Can you say what music means to you? What stopped me becoming a musician was that my lip went. I really wanted to be a trumpet player. When my lip went—it was during the war—I went back on to guitar and became a member of a trio. Ultimately we did variety shows . . . one thing led to another and I became what I am. But music has been my unending and constant love. It gives a tranquillity such as no other medium can give you. It is not a language, it’s an emotion. It’s something that I am hooked on forever. I am completely and utterly hooked on music. Sometimes I escape into music. I lock the door and play my music. And I resent any intrusion. There’s no such thing as really sharing. Someone can listen with you, but that’s not quite sharing. I want to share it with myself. The trio I worked with was the Bill Hall Trio—which became Hall, Norman and Ladd eventually. Bill Hall died from consumption; Johnny Mulgrove, who used to play bass with the Ambrose Octet before the war, he died—also from consumption. I think the act is still going.

I first came across Spike Milligan in the mid-1950s, when I was 12, listening to the revelatory radio series that was the Goons. Spike was both actor and writer, and I couldn't imagine what sort of person came up with these wonderfully rich, inventive scenarios every single week. The importance of the Goons was that it was my own generation's programme and taste. My parents didn't know what was going on when they heard Henry and Minnie Crun, Eccles and all these strange voices. I think my father thought the wireless was broken, that one of the valves had gone. It was delicious to enjoy it myself, without the embarrassment of listening to it with my parents. Until then my experience of radio comedy had been through shared programmes such as Much Binding in the Marsh and Take It From Here, so this was a quantum leap and I thought it was extraordinarily exciting.

kwfu: ['cfproperty','cfc']
A long time ago I promised to put some more info in my blog about CFCs. Well, now I'm coming good on that promise.
1. Providing static data for component instances
Say you have employee.cfc that contains employee information.
You can create an instance of this component as follows:
emp = createObject('component','employee');
You can then retrieve and view the data defined in the cfproperty tags like this:
Something like this:
The following code will allow you to see how this works:
emp = createObject('component','employee');
The downside of this way of doing things is that when you use the component browser you will not see what the default values will be in the documentation code. Spike posted by Spike Thursday, February 27, 2003

kwfu: ['travelling'] Well, it's been a long time since my last post and a lot of things have happened in that time... I've left my job in the Netherlands, been ski-ing in the French Alps for Christmas and New Year, spent a few weeks travelling across Canada, and got to Australia in time to speak at MXDU in Sydney on 19th and 20th of February. The conference was great and many thanks go out to the speakers and organizers who made it as good as it was. Special thanks to Geoff Bowers and the team from Daemon who had all the speakers over for a good ole aussie barbie on Friday night.
