Buy the book Buy the soundtrack Junkie Rating: 2 out of 4 pops I've heard it said that "Shrek" is a "new classic." Maybe, in the sense that "Tommy Boy" is a classic. Chris Farley was meant to be the voice of Shrek, after all. There is of course a fairy tale element, but the main focus here is more Saturday-Night-Live-ish. Perhaps it's just the presence of Mike Myers (and the afforementioned Farley connection) that reminds me of SNL, but this whole movie is one long parody. If you hate Disney, you will love "Shrek." Dreamworks is constantly throwing right hooks at real fairytale classics in this movie. My favorite is when they call Pinocchio "The possessed toy."

It is 1977 and Simpson, then a young executive at Paramount Pictures called in Danilo Bach a screenwriter to discuss what Bach thought was a rather unispiring premise for a story... An East LA cop gets transferred to Beverly Hills. Other than that there was no story.
Simpson envisaged that the movie would be a kind of cross between Clint Eastwood's "Dirty Harry", Warren Beatty's "Shampoo" and Roman Polanski's "Chinatown".
In any event Bach apparantly wasn't inspired and told the producer that he'd think about it. When a dearth of more interesting projets appeared, Bach pitched a slightly more defined version to Simpson. In this version, the cop would be from an East Coast city to investigate a murder that he believed was perpitrated by a smooth Bevely Hills businessman and would be turn Beverly Hills upside down with his 'rough town' investigative methods.
Simpson and his then-boss Michael Eisner loved the idea and the movie that would eventually become Beverly Hills Cop was born. In his original screenplay called "Beverly Drive" Bach's character was called "Elly Axel" and he was from Pittsburgh, investigating the brutal murder of a friend. Elly's character goes to Beverly Hills on the trail of his killer where he focusses his attention on a wealthy Beverly Hills businessman name Dagliesh whilst co-operating loosely with the local police through a 'by the book' leutenant named "Bogamil".

Eddie Murphy on TV

document.write('Eddie Murphy Posters'); Eddie Murphy Poster
Eddie Murphy is by far one of the more talented comedians to ever get up on stage. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 3rd, 1961. Eddie joined Saturday Night Live as a full time member in 1980 where he had a very memorable four year stint. Not long after SNL were a string of hits including Delirious 48 Hours Raw and Trading Places . After a few slow years, Eddie Murphy's career was somewhat rejuvenated with Beverly Hills Cop . But the late eighties and early nineties were tough times for Eddie Murphy at the box office; until the Nutty Professor was released in 1996. Eddie also recently lent his voice to Mulan, Shrek and the recent dog, Pluto Nash. Overall, Eddie Murphy has had a very successful movie and comedy career and has thrilled many fans.

Personally, if I had wanted to give Eddie Murphy a good reason toscream and act idiotic for a couple of hours I would have given him a glass of Liquid Plummer and a straw. However, producer Brian Grazer and director Tom ("Ace Ventura, Pet Detective") Shadyac made the process much more complicated and uninteresting by giving him $60 million and a script based on the 1963 Jerry Lewis comedy. Eddie plays about ten roles in this movie, including the Nutty Professor himself, Sherman Klump, who's about the size of a Geo Metro. His other roles include a Richard Simmons-like exercise guru and Sherman's entire family. Sherman discovers a magic potion that turns him from a fat professor into the good-looking, testosterone-charged Buddy Love. This gives him an excuse to run around like Jerry Lewis after a few too many Mountain Dews. (INTERACTIVE BONUS: Insert your own requisite French insult here.) Was it really that bad?

56. The Nutty Professor - Your Take
Review of the movie focusing primarily on eddie murphy's personality.
http://www.wh.org/murphy.htm
The Nutty Professor
This film Stars Jada Pinkett as Miss Purty and Eddie Murphy as Professor Sherman Klump. I'd not seen an Eddie Murphy movie in some time, having determined not to contribute to the success of anyone who earned a living destroying others. On stage, Mr. Murphy demeaned others and encouraged the most vile use of language imaginable. He made the comedy club entertainment format popular as he used his audience as props in his routine by drawing attention to their oddities and imperfections. Audiences roared their approval, even playing along when his sharp wit was directed at them. On screen, Eddie Murphy's persona represented a stereotype of Black Americans carefully developed for the enjoyment of white audiences. As White audiences enjoyed themselves at our expense, courtesy of Mr. Murphy, they learned the commercial version of Black culture, affirmed by Black would be songsters laboring in the sweat mines of rape music. The massive marketing and proliferation of such filth not only kept white audiences ignorant of real Black culture, but began to serve as indoctrination for Black youth struggling to find themselves. (There is a parallel between the artist who destroys his community with his craft and the dope pusher who does the same, the main difference being clientele: addicts pay for their momentary pleasure and their destruction with the same dollar; those frequenting establishments providing entertainment at the expense of others think they are not hurting themselves. Both groups are self-destructing.)

Born : Apr. 3, 1961 Brooklyn, New York, USA Poster Gallery Eddie was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 3rd, 1961. He was always entertaining his friends and family with his gift for voices and characterization. In his late teens he started entering talent contests and working in local clubs on Long Island. He eventually hit clubs in New York City. He worked hard, supporting himself with a job in shoe store while he performed in clubs and attended Nassau Community College. In 1980, he auditioned for Saturday Night Live and won a spot as a featured player. His talent for characters did not go unnoticed by the audience and pretty soon Murphy was a regular. For four years, he brought characters like Gumby, Mr. Robinson, Tyrone Green and Buckwheat to the small screen. Soon the big screen came knocking. 48 Hrs. with Nick Nolte. His smooth-talking persona also served him well in Trading Places (1983). He was already riding high with those two films under his belt. He landed a $15 million development deal with Paramount. He was a huge comedy concert attraction and his comedy albums were big sellers. He was a hot property that was about to get hotter. In 1984, Murphy starred in the film that really put his career in orbit:

Nutty Professor, The (1996)
A Film Review by James Berardinelli
United States, 1996
U.S. Release Date:
6/28/96 (wide)
Running Length:
MPAA Classification:
PG-13 (Profanity, flatulence)
Theatrical Aspect Ratio: Cast: Eddie Murphy, Jada Pinkett, Larry Miller, Dave Chapelle, James Coburn
Director: Tom Shadyac
Producers: Brian Grazer and Russell Simmons
Screenplay: David Sheffield, Barry W. Blaustein, and Steve Oederkerk based on the movie written by Jerry Lewis and Bill Richmond
Cinematography: Julio Macat
Music: David Newman U.S. Distributor: Universal Pictures Eddie Murphy does not make "comebacks", because, according to him, he hasn't been out of the spotlight. But, following three critical and box-office flops ( The Distinguished Gentleman, Beverly Hills Cop III , and Vampire in Brooklyn ), Murphy is hoping The Nutty Professor gets his career back on track. Combining his own brand of high- energy comedy with that of Ace Ventura veterans Tom Shadyac and Steve Oederkerk, Murphy is attempting to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. And, while the flatulence-joke lovers who flocked to Dumb and Dumber will doubtless be overwhelmed, not to mention doubled-over, by this movie, those hoping for more cerebral humor are destined to be disappointed.
