3. Last Of The Old-Time Outlaws: The George Musgrave Story
Last of the OldTime Outlaws THE GEORGE musgrave story. by Karen Holliday Tanner John D. Tanner Jr. Printed by University of Oklahoma Press, Norman. CIP.
http://www.gunfighter.com/musgrave/
Soft-spoken, cheerful, handsome, and well dressed, George West Musgrave "looked more like a senator that a cattle rustler." Yet he was a cattle rustler as well as a bandit, robber, and killer, "guilty of more crimes than Billy the Kid was ever accused of." In Last of the Old-Time Outlaws , Karen Holliday Tanner and John D. Tanner, Jr., recount the colorful life of Musgrave (1877-1947), enduring badmen of the American Southwest. Musgrave was a charter member of the High Five/Black Jack gang, which was responsible for Arizona's first bank hold-up, numerous post office and stagecoach robberies, and the largest Santa Fe Railroad heist in history. Following a decade-long hunt, he was captured and acquitted of killing a former Texas Ranger. After this near brush with prison or execution, he headed for South America, where he gained fame as a leading Gringo rustler. It wasn't until the 1940's that Musgrave's age and poor health brought an end to a criminal career that had spanned two continents and two centuries. Incorporating previously unknown facts about the career of this frontier outlaw, the Tanners thoroughly document Musgrave's half-century of crime, from his childhood in the Texas brush country to his final days in Paraguay.

"Karen and John Tanner have rescued George Musgrave, perhaps one of the most dangerous and certainly one of the most indestructible outlaws of his time, from the historical limbo into which he had disappeared and made him live and breathe. Ranging from the post-Civil War Texas Brasada to his final days in Paraguay, their account of Musgrave's half-century of outlawry is a carefully documented tour-de-force, which will undoubtedly become immediately and unassailably the definitive work on the subject. I cannot imagine how it could have been more thoroughly or meticulously done. This is historical research of the highest order."

Above the Law
The exploits of a little known but infamous Old West outlaw. By Emil Franzi Last of the Old-time Outlaws by Karen Holliday Tanner and John D. Tanner Jr.. University of Oklahoma Press, $39.95. He was Billy the Kid, Butch Cassidy and Bret Maverick combined. He rustled more cattle, stole more horses, ran more hustles and held up more stores, banks, post offices, stagecoaches and trains in a half-dozen states and five countries than a bunch of other and better known Old West outlaws combined. Then why have so few heard of George West Musgrave? Because his known aliases include: Burr, Bob Cameron, Jeff Davis, Bill Johnson, Jess Johnson, Ed Mason, George Mason, R.W. "Bob" Mason, Jesse Miller, Bob Murray, George W. Murray, Robert Sanders, Bob Steward, John Stoner and Jesse Williams. Warrants are probably still outstanding for some of those and a few others that even the Tanners meticulous research may have missed. On those rare occasions when he was caught, he posted bond, skipped and moved on to the next jurisdiction. Until this biography no one has ever connected all of his varied exploits under many names. He ranged from Wyoming and Nevada into California, New Mexico and Arizona. (He knocked off one previously untouched stage line in Santa Cruz County four times in two months.) The High Five/Black Jack gang he helped form pulled the largest Santa Fe Railroad heist in history. Like Butch and Sundance, he headed for South America. Unlike them he survived, dying in bed in his own house in Asuncion, Paraguay, in 1947 at the age of 70. He had become, among other things, a cattle baron, actually owning some of the cattle.

13. The Story Of Harriet Tubman By Thea Musgrave

"The Story of Harriet Tubman by Thea Musgrave,"
a concert review by Jeanne Shaffer
as published in the IAWM Journal , February 1993, pp. 9.
Mobile Opera presented "The Story of Harriet Tubman" by Scottish composer, Thea Musgrave, a narrated music-drama based on the opera, "Harriet, the Woman Called Moses," at Alabama State University in Montgomery on Saturday night, January 16 at 8:00 P.M.
For this tour, the full length opera was shortened to a ninety minute production without intermission; the orchestration was reduced to violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, horn, percussion, piano and synthesizer.
The set was designed to make touring to Selma, Birmingham, Pensacola, Monroeville and Montgomery as simple as possible. A raked stage, having set pieces attached by hinges, allowed smooth scene changes. The chorus of nine sat on wooden benches just off- stage right and left, and handed props to singers as needed. The tour closed with three performances in Mobile.
The cast of nine singers played twelve parts admirably.
Musgrave, as one would expect, used thematic material from several negro spirituals. The chorus entered down the aisles singing "Go Down, Moses" to good effect. But the melodic simplicity soon evolved into a rich and powerful dramatic work.

http://www.omnimag.com/archives/interviews/musgrave.html
Interviewed August 1994 by Nina L. Diamond
"I study the mind's orientation to a brand new world. When I speak to scientific groups, my discussions are taped and passed around. They enjoy them, but those who are strong in their various studies don't know much about the space world and human adaptation to it. For now, I am a pioneer." And a human guinea pig. Floating around various space shuttles, NASA's Story Musgrave has the kind of physical, emotional, and philosophical experiences people on Earth cannot duplicate even with illegal chemical recreation. So what is he really doing up there? And why does he come back down at all? Musgrave has been called the astronaut's astronaut. One of the few career astronauts, he is also a physician, philosopher, poet, pilot, skydiver, gardener, and perennial student. He is nearing completion of a masters in philosophy, which will be his seventh advanced degree, ranging from literature to computer science. He notes his every thought in his journals and in the margins of the thousands of books in his library. After receiving his M.D. from Columbia University in 1964, Musgrave joined NASA in 1967, with dreams of going to Mars in the near future as the mission's physician. Even as Mars receded as a real spacetrip, he threw himself into numerous technical assignments, helping to design and develop all of the shuttle's extravehicular activity (EVA) equipment and spacesuits. In April, 1983, after 16 years in the agency, he went into orbit on the
