Grounded Musgrave leaving NASA at 61
Turns down job training astronauts
CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (CNN) Story Musgrave, a free spirit and one of NASA's most experienced astronauts, announced Monday he is leaving the space program after learning he would never make another space flight. NASA officials told the astronaut a year ago that a November 1996 space shuttle mission would be his last, and re-affirmed that decision last week. "It was not my decision," the 61-year-old Musgrave said. "It was not a decision I could make." A L S O Anxious NASA officials watch high readings on shuttle Musgrave has made six space flights and had a 30-year career with the space agency. He has conducted medical experiments in space, deployed a defense department satellite and led the mission in December 1993, that did the first round of repairs on the Hubble Telescope.
"Space needs to get turned into art, it needs to be communicated, it needs to be expressed."
Musgrave joined NASA in 1967 during the Apollo program, but had to wait until 1983 for his first space mission, aboard the shuttle. He also holds two records, one as the oldest person to go into space, the other a tie for the most flights by an individual.

The Story of Harriet Tubman Harriet, the Woman Called Moses
Duration: 90'
6 principal singers, 3 actors, chorus (8)
fl, cl, hn, perc, pf, syn, vn, va, vc
Orchestrated by Julian Grant
Libretto by the composer based on the opera World Premiere: January 1993, Mobile Opera Composer's note:
The story of Harriet Tubman concerns an individual gifted with those rare qualities of courage and imagination which enabled her to overcome seemingly insuperable odds. She followed the North Star to freedom and then became herself a famous "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, helping many other slaves to escape. Her story is also a moving example of the age-old conflict between good and evil. Abraham Lincoln described it in very direct terms: ...slavery is the eternal struggle between two principles which have stood face to face since the beginning of time, and which will ever continue to struggle. The one is the common right of all humanity; the other is the divine right of kings. Slavery is the spirit that says 'You work and toil and earn bread, and I'll eat it!' No matter what shape it comes in it is the same principle. The remarkable seventeenth century Englishman, John Lilburne put it in another way: "For what is done to anyone may be done to everyone."

Libretto by Thea Musgrave, based on a story by Ambrose Bierce World Premiere: 14 September 1982
Jake Gardner, baritone
London Sinfonietta
Thea Musgrave, conductor
Commissioned by BBC radio Composer's Note: This one act opera written as an opera for radio and was first performed by the London Sinfonietta with the composer conducting in a BBC studio performance. Later that year it won a special mention in the Italia Prize. It is based on one of the famous short stories about the American civil war written in the late 19th century by Ambrose Bierce. This opportunity to write something for radio seemed to be a challenge to do something similar, but in "reverse" so to speak! That is, not to have a play using music "incidentally," but to start with the music and use speech and sound effects to help develop visual imagery. The main challenge of course was to find the right story. One where it would not only be possible to make use of radio techniques, but more...where it would be entirely natural to use them.

tory Musgrave motioned toward a slide of Florida he took from a space shuttle flight. Cirrus clouds speckled the ocean, and an emerald peninsula curved away to the horizon. "This is a direct experience of Earth. It's Emerson, it's Thoreau, it's the English Romantic poets," the 62-year-old former astronaut said. Florida by night followed, a thin sheath of light bulging at the cities. "Here we are, Miami, Fort Lauderdale. All you see is where the people are. Know what the brightest star in the human firmament is? Las Vegas. You look at that thing and you say, 'What is that?'" Veteran of six shuttle flights and 1,281 hours in space and the oldest human ever to fly in space, Musgrave brought a fresh, gee-whiz enthusiasm for space and a soft Kentucky drawl to Columbia last Thursday. "I hate to tell you I'm afraid of heights," he said on climbing the stage at Davis Auditorium in the Schapiro Center for Engineering and Physical Science Research. He was invited a year and a half ago to appear at Columbia by Joseph Graziano, professor of public health and pharmacology and head of the Division of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health. Musgrave delivered the fifth Granville H. Sewell Distinguished Lecture, established in 1993 in memory of the late clinical professor of public health and director of the division's graduate programs. When Musgrave accepted, Graziano also arranged a Morningside appearance, which was sponsored by the Columbia Earth Institute, and he was introduced by Peter Eisenberger, vice provost and director of the Institute and of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

The advance word is that accuracy rules in Disney's Mission to Mars . The first of two Mars-themed movies coming out this year (Warner Brothers' Red Planet opens November 10), Mission has been a NASA-friendly project from the start. What's the Movie About? The story takes place in the year 2020. Don Cheadle ( Bulworth, Out of Sight, Boogie Nights ) plays the commander of the first mission to Mars. The mission goes awry, all but Cheadle are killed, and a rescue mission is launched.
Actors Gary Sinise ( Forrest Gump, Ransom, Snake Eyes ), Tim Robbins ( The Shawshank Redemption, The Hudsucker Proxy, Bob Roberts ), Jerry O'Connell ( Stand By Me, Jerry Maguire, Scream 2 ) and Connie Nielsen ( The Devil's Advocate, Rushmore, Permanent Midnight ) make up the rescue team sent to bring Cheadle home. Special Presentation: An Evening With Story Musgrave
S tory Musgrave knew Space was calling him when NASA announced plans to recruit scientists as astronauts. It was 1967 and for Musgrave, "It was an absolute epiphany. It was clear to me that everything I'd done, every path I'd been on, was leading to that." W hat the call from NASA and the calling from Space led to was a record-breaking, 30-year career for Musgrave with the space agency and the "next frontier." Musgrave flew six missions, tying the record for most spaceflights by an astronaut. During his inaugural flight in 1983, on board Challenger for its maiden voyage, Musgrave performed the first shuttle spacewalk. On his sixth flight in 1996 at age 61, he became the oldest person ever to fly in Space. He was flying on NASA's oldest shuttle (Columbia), on the longest shuttle mission ever (18 days). He also achieved the unbreakable record of being the first to fly in all five space shuttles. B ut he is perhaps best known for his work aboard Endeavour in December of 1993, repairing and restoring to full capability the Hubble Space Telescope. As the mission's payload commander and lead spacewalker, Musgrave participated in three of the five record-setting walks over a two-day period (one lasting nearly eight hours). Memories of that flight include looking back toward Earth beyond the giant telescope and seeing the entire continent of Australia in one eyeful. "That's not something you see, he said. "It's something you feel in your stomach."

PETER WORTSMAN N ASA, Houston. Saturn V, the mighty rocket that flew 10 manned missions into space, now lies flat on its side, an arcane metal dinosaur in a patch of grass. In a nearby field, a pair of Texas longhorn cattle languorously chew their cud, oblivious to the pace of human enterprise. The juxtaposition is striking. Here at the hub of the great adventure of space travel, where rocket scientists hone humanity's wildest dreams, aerospace engineers give them shape, and a hand-picked cadre of astronauts train to ride those dreams into history, the future flies by in a flash. Most astronauts sign on for a limited hitch. But when you're in it for the long haul, like Story Musgrave'64, you can't get space out of your system. In 1997, at age 62, following 30 years at NASA and after flying all five space shuttles (Challenger in 1983 and 1985, Discovery in 1989, Atlantis in 1991, Endeavour in 1993, and Columbia in 1996), raring as always to go up again, the oldest space traveler reluctantly accepted retirement. Biting the bullet, he's shifted his focus to space education, to "communicate the heart and soul of what human spaceflight is about." "Now Life is Leaping off the Planet"
Story Musgrave'64 at Alumni Day 1994 L ithely leaping over a wall to open the locked door of a test module, the ideal setting for an interview, the senior spaceman shows he still has the right stuff.

Astronaut Story Musgrave Brings His Stories to Columbia
When Ted Koppel asked Story Musgrave why space exploration continued when it is so clearly both dangerous and expensive, Story answered: "We have no choice, sir. It's the nature of life ... It's heading for other parts of the universe ... It isn't simply politics. It isn't simply technology ... You could look at it as maybe the essence of life." Space exploration has been Dr. Musgrave's personal mission since his childhood. After receiving his doctorate in medicine from Columbia in 1964, he began working for NASA as a scientist-astronaut and launched his career in space on April 4, 1983. He has since logged 1,281 hours 59 minutes 22 seconds in space and earned the title of "oldest human on a space mission" in 1996, at the age of 61. On Thursday, October 23 at 9:30 a.m., Dr. Musgrave will present a lecture to the Columbia community in the Davis Auditorium, Shapiro Center for Engineering and Physical Science Research. He will discuss the "Earth as a Work of Art" by using images in nature, such as a sunset. He will present several examples of aesthetic images that have a scientific basis. The lecture is sponsored by the Columbia Earth Institute (CEI), a consortium of Columbia's resources in Physical Systems, Biological Systems, and Human Systems. CEI seeks to develop new technologies and policies to support the enlightened stewardship of Planet Earth. The Columbia School of Public Heath has sponsored a second Story Musgrave lecture titled "An Artist's View of the Universe" at 4:00 p.m. in 401 Health Sciences.

STORY MUSGRAVE, M.D.
Over the course of 30 years, Story Musgrave, M.D. paved his way into NASA history as one of its most colorful, passionate and dedicated astronauts. He joined NASA in 1967 with every confidence to be part of a mission to Mars. Although those plans didn't work out, many others did. He served on two satellite-launching missions and led the spacewalking team that repaired the Hubble Space Telescope in 1993. He was also the first astronaut to fly a record-breaking six space shuttle missions. And, as of his last flight in 1996, he was the oldest person in space at the age of 61. In addition, he made many "behind-the-scenes" contributions, helping to design the Skylab program in the mid-1970s and the spacesuits and equipment needed by astronauts on spacewalks. Prior to joining NASA, Musgrave was a Marine, serving as an aviation electrician and aircraft crew chief in the Far East. After returning to the U.S., he also worked for the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York, as a mathematician. When selected by NASA in 1967, he was a researcher in cardiovascular and exercise physiology at the University of Kentucky, where he has previously interned as a surgeon and worked as a U.S. Air Force post-doctoral fellow. Born in 1935 in Boston, this amazing space explorer is also a fan of the classroom. To date, he holds six degrees a doctorate of medicine, as well as two bachelor's degrees and three master's degrees in subjects ranging from mathematics to business administration to literature. He has published 44 scientific papers on topics such as aerospace medicine, exercise physiology and clinical surgery. When not sitting in a classroom, he regularly devours literature, philosophy and metaphysics.
