He helped create an ongoing story involving a giant living piece of seaweed (above) and three delivery boys from "Bird Hut" Pizza (below). One of the delivery boys would later enter Hound's Home as Shooey, the chauvinistic little bird. Ryan draws himself as Orco's apprentice to help relieve the stress of science class.

Studies on Endocytosis of cell surface receptors, Notch activation and Mouse Mammary Gland Development The strength, duration and mechanism of signaling from growth factor receptors are controlled through regulation of endocytosis and recycling. We have recently identified a novel and complex family of endocytic proteins. The Ese proteins posses up to 11 protein-protein interaction domains including 2 EH domains, a coiled-coil domain, up to 5 SH3 domains, a DBL domain, a PH domain and a C2 domain. We have also found that Ese proteins can bind to Eps15(R), Dynamin, and Epsin to regulate endocytosis through clathrin coated pits. We are currently investigating the role of Ese proteins in endocytosis of several growth regulatory receptors. The Notch family receptors have been implicated in development of most tissues in complex animals. We are interested in how the Notch receptors are activated. To this end we have recently identified mammalian Fringe proteins (Lunatic, Manic and Radical Fringe) which control Notch activation in response to Delta and Serrate family ligands. The biochemical mechanism by which Fringes regulate Notch activation is under investigation. Finally, we are studying how the Notch system is activated during mouse mammary gland development, and what role the Notch receptor system plays in regulation of growth and differentiation of mammary epithelial cells in vivo.

Lack of decent lyrics, pretension. The Bottom Line It's a deeply flawed record, but I love it anyway. Full Review matter : what idiot would care that it’s cheap Whiskey(town) if it gets you drunk anyway? And it should also be noted that at least he takes the effort to gather up the best music ever created (Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones) to rip-off instead of just blatantly imitating The Pixies like other current critical darlings (*cough* The White Stripes *cough*). But before we delve into that, I should acknowedlege the album’s faults: many people hate this album, and they have damn good reasons to do so. Indubitably the worst thing about it are the lyrics; despite collaborating with helluva different writers (including Dave Rawlings), Adams seldom reaches the romantic loser heights of his

By Amy K. Nelson, Special to SI.com BOSTON (Ticker) It's as if his path was chosen for him the moment he entered the world Ryan Miller was born not a baby, but a hockey player. Maybe not, but Miller, 22, is a decendent of a family rich with hockey history. In 1999, he became the ninth member of his clan to play hockey at Michigan State. His cousin, Kip Miller , was the 1990 Hobey Baker winner and now center for the Washington Capitals "Anyone who's close to use knows we're more than that," said Ryan. "Although we made some strong commitments to the sport, I think we're a lot more well-rounded than people even expect." While true, it would be foolish to ignore the impact it had on the young netminder. Clearly the ice is in his genes. By his sophomore year, the East Lansing native had taken over the collegiate hockey world. Miller, who owns the NCAA record for career shutouts with 26, broke Central Collegiate Hockey Association records in goals-against average (1.24), save percentage (.950) and shutouts in conference play (9) in 2000-01. For his efforts that season, Miller joined Minnesota Golden Gopher Robb Stauber (1988) as the only two goaltenders to win the prestigious Hobey Baker.

Ryan Newman Ryan Newman grew up in South Bend, Indiana. At the age of 4, Newman started racing quarter midgets where he won over 100 races. He moved up into Midgets and Sprint cars in subsequent years, winning races in every level he chose to compete. In the last three years. Newman has made the successful transition from open-wheel racing to stock cars where he has become a star in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
Newman's first taste of NASCAR came in 2000. He made a successful debut with Penske Racing, starting six events: five in the 2000 ARCA Bondo Mar/Hyde Series and one in the Winston Cup Series. In the five ARCA starts, Newman earned two wins and three poles.
2001 was a continuation of Newman's graduated entry to stock car racing. Penske Racing put together his "ABC" program which consisted of ARCA, Busch and Winston Cup Series races. Newman won 2 races in 2001, one in ARCA and one in Busch. In addition to winning the pole in six of the 15 Busch races, Newman also won his first Winston Cup pole at Charlotte in May. His best finish in the top rank was a second at Kansas where he narrowly lost to eventual champion Jeff Gordon.
Last season was Newman's first complete year on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit driving the Alltel/Sony Ford Taurus. He wasted little time proving he would be a force each weekend, consistently racing in the top-5 until he had a breakthrough win at "The Winston" NASCAR All-Star race in Charlotte. While not a points-paying race, Newman showed his mettle by winning the event as an at-large entry. By September, Newman won his first points race, capturing the New Hampshire event from the pole. He went on to notch a series-leading 6 pole positions, setting a rookie record in the process. By season's end, Newman had finished his rookie season sixth in overall points and was awarded the "Rookie-of-the-Year" honor.

Top-notch acting makes film worthy

by Chris Longhito
Greyhound Film Critic W ith his earlier film, The Bear , director Jean-Jacques Annaud transformed the wilderness into something eerily majestic, a world of danger and wonder, and immersed the audience headlong into an engaging tale set against this slightly off-kilter canvas. In his new World War II saga, Enemy at the Gates , Annaud once again uses atmosphere and lavish production design to plunge us into the pivotal Battle of Stalingrad with tangible success. The film centers on a young Russian soldier named Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law), whose sharp-shooting prowess elevates him to the status of national hero. It opens in a snow-blanketed forest in the Urals, where a young Zaitsev is preparing to shoot a wolf before it attacks one of his horses. He is coached by his grandfather, who whispers into his ear to keep him steady. The scene intensifies and ends with Zaitsev firing his rifle. We do not see whether he kills the wolf or not, which will weigh heavily in the film later. The scene then shifts to the embarkation ports to Stalingrad, and an opening battle ensues that, while visually stunning, lacks the emotional distress of the Omaha Beach sequence in

"What lies ahead for University of Hawaii athletics?"
by Ryan Torres The question everyone keeps asking is, "Should U.H. leave the WAC (Western Athletic Conference)? They should, but at the moment not many viable options are available. Everyone keeps saying how U.H. should join the Pac-10 and leave the WAC for a better conference. Of course joining a conference the caliber of the Pac-10 would be ideal, but how realistic is that? At the moment, the Pac-10 is not even considering expansion beyond its present ten members. When and if the Pac-10 decides to expand, it will most likely expand to twelve members, thus enabling it to split the conference into two divisions and create a championship game which will generate substantial income for its conference members. The last time talk of Pac-10 expansion floated around years ago, Hawaii was not even one of the schools mentioned in that discussion. National powerhouses such as Colorado and Texas from the Big 12 conference were some of the names being tossed around back then. Other than men's and women's volleyball, Hawaii is not considered a year-in and year-out national contender in any other sports, especially in the big three: football, basketball, and baseball. With the reluctance of the U.H. administration to negotiate a lucrative extension with current football coach, June Jones, one has to question how financially committed U.H. is to creating a top notch athletic program.

Saving Private Ryan
Rated R Runtime: 2hr 49min Starring: Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore MFG Rating: 5/5
Order Now DVD Features Widescreen Enhanced, Trailers, Production Notes, Making Of Feature The soundtrack will certainly give your subwoofer a workout. Directional effects are done extremely well during battle scenes and make a great demonstration disk for your Home Theater system. Video quality is fine but remember that the movie was filmed to have a "documentary" look to it and as such there is apparent film grain during quite a few scenes. The making of feature is interesting as well. - John The Army, in its infinite wisdom, does some really stupid things. The premise of the movie (and it's based on a true story) is that the Ryan family sent four brothers into the war, three of which were killed at or around D-Day. When a certain General learns of the fate of the Ryan brothers he decides that it would be "the decent thing" to send in troops to get the one remaining Ryan brother out of the war.

March 18, 2002 Box Score Homestead, Florida - Pitchers beware. University of Illinois at Chicago junior right fielder Curtis Granderson (Lynwood, Ill./T.F. South) is making his presence felt at the plate for the UIC Flames as he leads the team in batting with an average of .490. Granderson continued his torrid pace on Monday afternoon as he went 3-for-4, with four runs scored, four RBI, a stolen base and a home run to lead UIC to the 12-0 victory over Drexel at the Homestead Challenge. Junior designated hitter Weber Bowen (Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) was the only other Flames' batter to notch at least two hits as he was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

http://www.russellw.com/planes/ryan/flying.htm
Flying the Ryan SC-W Home Williams Aircraft Collection Ryan SC-W The SC-W is one of those rare planes that flies as good as it looks. It is a joy in the air.
Preflight
Preflight begins with a cockpit inspection, reached by climbing up the narrow wingwalk on either side of the fuselage. The canopy is opened by twisting on the handle atop the canopy frame, and it slides back. Inside the cockpit, the first thing to check is the fuel valve, which is buried underneath the fuel tank. The fuel tank is located directly in front of the cabin and above the rudder pedals, just the place to spill fuel in your lap in case of an accident! While up on the wing, the single fuel tank is visually checked for fuel level. The cap is in the center of the fuselage just in front of the windshield. The fuel gauge seems pretty accurate and is a direct-reading window on the back of the fuel tank, similar to the gauge in an Aeronca Champ. The remainder of the preflight is pretty standard beyond checking the engine for hydraulic lock by turning over the prop manually. One annoying mis-feature of this airplane is that the cowling has no oil door, so the entire cowling must be opened up to check the oil level. This involves removing 3 screws and undoing the cowling latches at the bottom, then avoiding the oil drips. I plan to add an oil door to the left side of the cowling to alleviate this problem.
Startup and Taxi
Like most Warner-engined aircraft, the Ryan has no impulse couplings for the engine magnetos. This makes starting a little more interesting and a magneto timing retard control is provided to ease the pain. The Ryan usually starts up with three shots of primer, about 1/2 inch of ignition retard, and slight throttle pumping while cranking. After starting it is important to return the magneto timing control to the full advance position or else the engine won't make power.

Forbidden Peak - West Ridge
Forbidden Peak and my student, Jason.
Soon after arriving at the Marblemount ranger station early Saturday morning to try and grab a permit for a weekend in Boston Basin, we found that they had all been issued the day before. This was supposed to be an experience climb for the Boealps Intermediate class that I was helping instruct (on and off) this year. After scrapping our plans for Torment and Forbidden, one each day, we drove up the river road kicking around some ideas. Jason and Dave H. were the two students, and Ryan Allen and I were the instructors. We were all pretty psyched about Forbidden, and so we concentrated on how we could accomplish that without a permit for Saturday night. We decided that taking uncomfortable bivi gear, and planning to complete the route car to car on Saturday was the best idea. The only problem was the 8 am start from the trail head! This was a mere 3 hours later than our day attempt last year, but what where we going to do? Sit around the parking lot all day We hiked in fast with our light packs, and after two hours we were zooming through the open fields in Boston Basin. The weather was spectacular, and the temperatures were already in the 70's. The students helped navigate us onto the slabs below the glacier with some beta from two guys back at the high camp.

Volume XXVIII Issue 14 December 5, 2002 Browse Past Issues ALE should enforce alcohol laws prior to a job hire being made
Letter
I am writing in response to the articles submitted by Ryan Costello and Ryan Notch. Like Ryan Costello, I am also a server at Outback Steakhouse. While I was appalled when I heard of his termination, I do agree with Notch. Costello could have done more research before he voiced his opinion. When I was hired as a server, the restaurant did not check to see if I had any alcohol violations in the past year. I was not even aware that a law existed against serving alcohol at a restaurant no sooner than two years after a violation in the state of North Carolina. It turns out that the restaurant was not aware of this either. I am a firm believer that the law, is the law and no exceptions should be made. However, it is the duty of the restaurant to be aware of these laws so that they do not hire violators unknowingly. It is also the duty of the ALE to make this law known. I am sure when Costello received an alcohol violation in 2001, he thought that after he paid his fine it was over. If North Carolina wants to enforce this law, they need to make sure violators and restaurant owners are aware of it.

Season 2, Episode 10 "Coyotes"
Air date: 3-11-03 The show seemed oddly just a little light in tone, at least relative to the general tone of the series. Quick review makes me realize that this may be the least violent episode of the series to date. There were no murders, tortures, or even major fist fight. The worst direct act of violence was the new Strike Team trainee kicking over a perps chair before Lemonhead pulled him off. This toning down of violence suits me. It's a little bit of cleansing the palette so as not to be so jaded that the depictions of violence are ineffective. There'll doubtless be some ugly stuff next week to make up for it. They gave the the ol' ultra-violence a bit of a rest. In fact, the show does not suffer from this less violent tone. They got great drama and intrigue from the Gilroy resolution. It set tests for Vic in terms of his ideas of loyalties and practical personal considerations. Not having people shot or tortured to death doesn't mean that there's nothing going on. Note how hard he's struggling to keep it between some kind of lines, but hasn't quite figured out where they are. He'd have a LOT more legitimate reason to just eliminate Gilroy than he ever had for Terry in the pilot.
