Eugene Wesley "Gene" Roddenberry
Gene Roddenberry created a legend which continues on today, creating a show that has helped believe that there was a future worth living for. He showed us that space is not just for space battles, but for learning new ideas and ways of thinking, and, indirectly, has done more for civil rights and the space program than Martin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy. Gene Roddenberry will be missed, but will not be forgotten. In September 1987, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" continued the legend that Gene Roddenberry began more than 25 years ago. As creator and producer of the original "Star Trek" television series, he launched a phenomenon without precedent in show business and attained a celebrity status unique among his peers. Although Gene Roddenberry passed away October 24, 1991, his legacy remains as "Star Trek: The Next Generation", "Deep Space Nine", "Voyager", and more recently, "Earth: Final Conflict" continue to maintain his vision of the future. While making "Star Trek," Roddenberry's reputation as a futurist began to grow. His papers and lectures earned him high professional regard in that field. He spoke on the subject at NASA meetings, the Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress gatherings and top universities.

The show went outside television to win science fiction's coveted Hugo Award and then ultimately became a succession of feature films (six to date). Gene Roddenberry led a life as colorful and exciting as almost any high- adventure fiction. He was born in El Paso, Texas, on August 19, 1921, spent his boyhood in Los Angeles, studied three years of college pre-law and then transferred his academic interest to aeronautical engineering and qualified for a pilot's license. He volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps in the fall of 1941 and was ordered into training as a flying cadet as the war began.

11. Star Trek: Unofficial - Gene Roddenberry
Gene Roddenberry. He was a man with a vision. A simple one, where everyonelived in harmony. But that is not all there is to Gene Roddenberry.
http://startrek.kraftysworld.co.uk/gene.htm
HTML 4.01 CSS Gene Roddenberry He was a man with a vision. A simple one, where life would be better than today, with no more wars and starvation and everyone lived in harmony. But that is not all there is to Gene Roddenberry. Born in 1922 in Texas, he spent most of his childhood growing up in Los Angeles. There, he studied at UCLA in aeronautical engineering. He later became a pilot in the Second World war, flying several missions and was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. After the war, he went on to fly for Pan American World Airways. it was while he was a pilot that he started to write stories and poetry that were published in several magazines and newspapers. Then he saw television and rightly envisioned its impact on society. So he upped sticks and, leaving his flying days behind him, headed for Hollywood. being only an up and coming writer, he supplemented his income by joining the L.A.P.D. But soon his scripts began to sell and he had finally established himself as a credited writer and he handed in his badge and went on to be a Freelance Agent, heading the writing teams for such shows as Have Gun, Will Travel. And then came his big break, his vision, Star Trek. At the time of Star Trek's creation, I don't think Roddenberry had any idea whatsoever of the phenomenon he was to bring into the world. Even after the Original Series had been shown world wide on TV, there didn't seem to be much of a response to it. It was only after it was put into syndication that it started to get what would become a massive cult following. And to date, the show has been given eleven Emmy Awards and Roddenberry himself has been given the Jack Benny Memorial Award for lifetime achievement by the March of Dimes. Starting from what was planned to be just one show with three series, Star Trek has now expanded into four series and to date nine films. Quite an achievement for a man with a vision.

GENE RODDENBERRY , 'Great Bird of the Galaxy'.......
"We must remember that the promise of tomorrow will not be fulfilled easily. The collective commitment of our nations, as well as the vision, wisdom and hard work of many - many individuals will be required to bring our dreams to fruition. In a way, the Enterprise and the optimistic future in which it exists, might be thought of as a reminder of what we can acheive when we really try!!!"
Gene Roddenberry's ashes will finally be where his dreams have always taken him - into space!!!! Through Celestis, Inc., a Houston-based company pioneering the 'Ashes-to- Stardust' Program, a pegasus rocket containing a two-pound canister will be launched from under a L-1011 aircraft. The rocket carrying Gene Roddenberry's ashes in a capsule, will follow a trajectory over the Canary Island, three-hundred miles above the Earth. Gene's capsule will acheive orbit where it will remain for between 18 months and 10 years. Eventually, as the orbit degrades, the capsule will descend into the Earth's atmosphere for its' final, spectacular disintegration.
Gene Roddenberry, writer, film and television producer, led a life as colorful and exciting as almost any high-adventure fiction. Born in El Paso, TX, on August 19, 1921, his family moved to Los Angeles when he was three, and there he spent his boyhood with his brother, Bob, and sister, Doris. After High School, he studied three years of college pre-law and then transferred his academic interest to aeronautical engineering and qualified for a pilot's license.

I think God is as much a basic ingredient in the universe as neutrons and positrons. This is the prime force, when we look around the universe.
The starship Excelsior Gene Roddenberry, the legendary creator of Star Trek, was born in El Paso, Texas, in 1921. He studied law, then switched to aeronautical engineering and trained as a pilot. In 1941 he volunteered for the US Army Air Corps, and won medals for bombing missions from Guadalcanal. After the war he became a pilot for Pan Am. After seeing television for the first time, he decided to become a TV writer, but when he found no openings, he joined the Los Angeles Police Department and rose to sergeant. He wrote TV scripts in his spare time, then went freelance. He was the chief writer for several TV series before launching Star Trek in 1966. Roddenberry became anti-religious at an early age. As a youth he attended Baptist church, but it was not till he was sixteen that he began to pay any real attention to what the sermons were saying: I remember complete astonishment because what they were talking about were things that were just crazy. It was Communion time where you eat this wafer and you are eating the body of Christ and drinking His blood. My first impression was "Jesus Christ, this is a bunch of cannibals they've put me down among . . . I guess from that time it was clear to me that religion as largely nonsense, was largely magical, superstitious things. [Alexander pp 36- 37.]

Creator and producer of Star Trek . The early years of that series were tough, touch and go, given bad ratings even though the program had a hugh unrated audience, and finally, cancelled over another wave of protests of outraged fans. That fandom never went away and Star Trek went into reruns (syndication) where it grew. The continuing popularity created a demand for motion pictures, 6 in all, which Roddenberry furnished, and those successes, created three spin-off TV series:

All that nonsence about the dangers of mixed races living together on a space ship, or anywhere, and how some parts of our country were certain to refuse to televise Star Trek because we showed such things; the hatred that would supposedly flood our mail, turning sponsors against us.
