George A. Romero is the undisputed champion of the Zombie flick, with his first feature, Night Of The Living Dead being made for next-to-nothing in 1968. This film was a tongue-in-cheek adventure into this genre that soon became a cult film world-wide. Ten years later Romero came out with his second in the installment of three with Dawn Of The Dead which was a brilliantly satirical film packed with some of the most severe gore seen up to that time. Romero has been unable to match these two films, with Day Of The Dead, Monkey Shines: An Experiment In Fear and The Dark Half. However with Martin also in 1978 he did come close; making a superior vampire film that has also become a cult classic.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
A l'instar de Massacre à la tronçonneuse La nuit des morts vivants est un film dont beaucoup de gens ont entendu parler mais que peu de personnes ont vu. Et dans ce genre de cas, les néophytes pensent avoir à faire à un film d'une extrême violence. Il n'en est rien. Il est possible qu'en 1968 ce film ai pu choquer, mais désormais il pourrait passer à 20h50 sur TF1.
Cependant, que l'aspect archaïque ne vous arrêtes pas, car vous risqueriez de passer à côté d'un chef d'uvre. En effet, ce film est d'une force extraordinaire. Non seulement grâce à son rythme soutenu, son absence de fioritures (qui se fait sentir dans tout ses films), cette volonté de jouer sur nos peurs viscérales (le cannibalisme), mais essentiellement grâce à sa capacité à faire partager le sentiment de claustrophobie des occupants de la résidence. En effet, la force principale du film réside dans le fait que George ROMERO nous plonge littéralement dans la peau des personnages, ce qui rend le film encore plus angoissant.
Barbara et Johnny viennent déposer une gerbe sur la tombe de leur père. Arrivés au cimetière, Johnny est sauvagement attaqué par un homme étrange, il meurt. Barbara trouve refuge dans une maison où elle apprend que les morts reviennent à la vie. Ses compagnons et elle vont tenter de former la résistance.

Profile: George Romero George Romero didn't even have a feature film to his credit when he teamed up with an ad agency in 1967 to produce a horror film. The struggling Pittsburgh filmmaker was in his late 20s when he came up with the idea for " Night of the Living Dead ," a film inspired both by Tales From the Crypt comic books and the long-forgotten, 1950s zombie film "Invisible Invaders" (which bears remarkable similarities to "Night"). The film would be made with almost no budget and a cast of amateur actors, but would change both horror movies and the film industry itself for decades. For the first time a filmmaker could have a major commercial and cultural impact with a low-budget, independently produced B movie. Romero followed up the worldwide commercial and critical success of "Night" with a similar film, " The Crazies ," where he displayed a taut directing and editing style that would be seen throughout many of his later films. A film about a disease that turns people into psychopaths, "The Crazies" would be heavily imitated later by another legendary horror filmmaker, David Cronenberg , in his film "

I remember the first horror movie I ever saw. It was Psycho II , starring Anthony Perkins and Meg Tilly. I remember my mom dragging me to it when it was at the Plaza Twin theaters and me pleading with her that it would give me nightmares if I went. "Oh, be quiet," she said to me. "You'll like it." She was right. I think it was my mom who really got me hooked on the horror genre. I did always have an interest in the old Universal monsters, like Frankenstein, Dracula, the wolf man, the mummy, but I had never really been introduced to "modern horror cinema." Psycho II (and my mom) got me interested in the newer, gorier films and it also got me into the habit of renting a couple of horror movies every Friday night when I was in the seventh grade. As I recall, it was late in the year of 1983 or 1984 when my mom and I made a fatefull trip to a little video rental store downtown (I think it was called "Show Time"). I walked into the store and asked the clerk there (I can still sort of remember what he looked like blonde, nice shirt) if the movie "Phantasm" was there. Unfortunately it was out. He did ask me if he could recommend two other films: "Night of the Living Dead," and "Dawn of the Dead." The clerk seemed really enthusiastic about them, so my mom rented them for me. Later in the car, while driving back home, she said she had seen a preview of "Night of the Living Dead" many years ago at a drive in theater and she said it looked like one of the scariest movies she'd ever seen a preview for. I was really anticipating getting home and popping these suckers in.

I just can't let them go. I love 'em too much. Zombies rule, baby. And if you're sick and tired of me talking about them, you obviously shouldn't be reading this magazine. If you're the type of person who thinks they're ridiculous, then you've been brainwashed ny Michael Jackson and you should really go watch The English Patient again. Because you probably won't understand me when I say that a trilogy of zombie movies can form a true milestone in cinema history. They can. George A. Romero's Living Dead trilogy - Night Of The Living Dead, Dawn Of The Dead and Day Of The Dead - is a truly classic filmseries, transcending genre boundaries and short-sighted dismissiveness. And I'm going to put my money where my mouth is, and explain to you exactly why. So make yourself comfortable, because this article is even longer than the one I did on James Cameron.
Part 1: Night Of The Living Dead - 1968
A grainy black and white horror movie, shot for almost no money by a man who had previously only made a Calgon commercial. Of course it's an instant classic.
In the history of horror cinema, Night Of The Living Dead is one the most important and influential films ever made. It broke with tradition, set new standards, made daring choices in casting and signalled the arrival of a great filmmaking talent.
