Bio:

This Pittsburgh-based independent filmmaker was a pivotal figure in the development of the contemporary horror film. Beginning with his first feature, "Night of the Living Dead" (1968), Romero not only upped the ante on explicit screen violence and gore but also offered an often satirical critique of American society that reflected the cultural upheavals of the late 1960s and early 70s. Ethnically and sexually integrated, pro-feminist, gay-friendly, anti-macho and skeptical about capitalism, his work represents the progressive wing of a sometimes reactionary genre. More...

George A Romero A relatively recent addition the the TIFF lineup, the " Dialogues Freaks ", John Sayles at " The Informer ", Robert Towne at " The Four Feathers ", and John Waters' at the immortal Burton/Taylor howler " Boom! "Mr. Romero, will you please sign all 200 of my "NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD" collector trading cards?" George A. Romero , the Pittsburgh-based horror maverick, chose Powell and Pressburger's 1951 " Tales Of Hoffman ". Romero did not have a film in the festival (unlike the other directors in the series), but was in Toronto overseeing postproduction of his new thriller, " Bruiser ", starring Peter Stormare. While a British-produced Technicolor adaptation of a famous opera (and performed in English) might seem an unlikely choice from the man who brought cannibalism into the mainstream, Romero countered that the deliberate artifice of parts of the film ignited the notion in his mind that perhaps he could make movies himself one day, and fueled his appreciation of "fine arts" beyond comic books and B-pics. Romero reminisced that as a teen, he would periodically sign a 16mm print out of a local library in the Bronx, but often had to fight another young fan named Martin Scorcese for it! Fortunately for TIFF audiences, a rare pristine print from the British Film Institute eluded Romero and Scorcese's hands and allowed us to share Romero's reverie in the film's "constant metaphor for the transforming power of imagination through art".

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY George A. Romero American director George A. Romero was making films from the age of 14 with an 8mm camera, like most teen movie enthusiasts. Matriculating into the industrial-film business in Philadelphia, Romero accrued enough capital to make his first feature-length film, a graphically gruesome zombie picture titled Night of the Living Dead (1968). Barely making back its cost on its first release, Night received some welcome, if adverse, publicity when Reader's Digest devoted an article to the film. The magazine was appalled at the scenes of cannibalism and similar horrors, going so far as to insist that a movement be started to have the picture banned! Naturally, this made Night of the Living Dead more popular than ever, much more so than if Reader's Digest had simply ignored it. The profits of Living Dead enabled Romero to finance several more low-budget scare pictures before he broke into the "mainstream" with Dawn of the Dead , a semi-comic sequel to his first film.

    George A. Romero (*1940)
George Romero started his career in the late 1960s with the first modern horror film, the hugely successful NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. He worked on similar movies in the 1970s and delivered his masterpiece in 1978 with DAWN OF THE DEAD, a stomach-churning apocalyptic horror film, one of the best of the genre. The last part of the DEAD-trilogy was DAY OF THE DEAD in 1985, which due to some budgetary restrictions was not the epic that Romero intended to make.
Romero always includes social commentary in his films, sometimes more, sometimes less successfully. His best achievements are: The DEAD-trilogy, MARTIN, and KNIGHTRIDERS. In 2002, Romero took part in a poll initiated by the British Film Institute. Among others, he names Roman Polanski's REPULSION and Stanley Kubrick's Dr. STRANGELOVE as two of the greatest films ever made. Romero's own favorite film of all time is THE TALES OF HOFFMAN by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
