Late blues and soul singer knew how to 'tear the place up'
By JOHN WIRT

Advocate entertainment writer
Whenever local blues and soul singer Chuck Mitchell performed, he rocked the house. "He had that voice and he had that drive power," said Mitchell's friend and fellow musician, Raful Neal. "He was a hell of a singer. Always was." Roy Stewart, another friend and collaborator, compared Mitchell's singing to that of national star Lou Rawls and New Orleans favorite Johnny Adams. "Of course," Stewart said, "Chuck had more a sweet voice than Lou Rawls, more like Jackie Wilson. Matter of fact, a lot of artists got mad with Chuck. We used to back up these artists, and Chuck would go out there and clean them out. I remember Johnnie Taylor got mad one time. Chuck stole the show." Mitchell Johnus Geran used Chuck Mitchell as his stage name. The 61-year-old singer also worked as a body and fender man. He died Monday after spending much of the day sanding a 1956 Chevrolet truck. His sudden passing shook friends, family and local blues fans. "I just couldn't hardly sleep all night," Raful Neal said Tuesday. "I kept waking up, thinking about Chuck. When a person is sick and in the hospital, you expecting something like that, but he even worked yesterday."

Ridin' the Trails with Roy and Dale
at the 6th Annual Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Western Film Festival!
By Tom Conner The 6th Annual Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Western Film Festival was produced under the guidance of Joel Dortch, Executive Director of the Happy Trails Children's Foundation. Proceeds from the event went to benefit the abused children living at the Cooper Home in Apple Valley, California. This non-profit organizationand the abused children it serveswas very dear to the hearts of Roy and Dale and a charity that the Rogers family continues to strongly support through the leadership of Roy "Dusty" Rogers, Jr., and his sister, Cheryl Rogers-Barnett. The festival started promptly at 9:30 Saturday morning with Roy riding up on Trigger in the Roy Rogers Rider's Club short and opening the event with the Cowboy's Prayer. After Joel Dortch gave a hearty welcome to the Western fans and Boyd Magers, special guest moderator, introduced the celebrities, the proceedings began with the 1941 Republic Pictures publicity short, Meet Roy Rogers. Next came an episode of the Roy Rogers TV show (featuring House Peters, Jr.) followed by Previews of Coming Attractions which led directly into the first feature film, South of Santa Fe. Other pictures screened at this year's film festival included, Rainbow Over Texas, Trigger, Jr. (a 35mm restored Trucolor print), Spoilers of the Plains, Idaho, Billy the Kid Returns, and Man From Oklahoma. The film schedule concluded on Sunday afternoon with the 1950 Trucolor picture, Bells of Coronado.

Close Encounters
After a flight, Chuck Berry and I took to Glasgow, Scotland for a concert, we were walking up to about 50 photographers in the airport terminal. Chuck turned to me and said, put your best foot forward Roy, we're about to be flashed with pictures. Chuck's jaw dropped and sputtered a few choice words as our too cool walk took us straight by them all, to have them load up and start shooting racing car driver, Jackie Stewart, who followed behind us. Jackie was returning home after just winning a major circuit race. On tour in Germany Ray Charles' manager asked us all to leave the Raylets dressing room while they changed for the show. My curiousity got the better of me when I asked Ray's manager with a smile why Ray had to leave as well. He said everytime they were in the buff and made a noise, Ray would turn his head and stare straight at them. Ray's keen sense of hearing got him into some embarassing moments. I received a call one day at my home in England from Paul McCartney. He said I would love you to come to our home and teach Linda to play piano as he was preparing to put together "Wings". It was right at the time when I was in the middle of recording my own album and although I would of been honoured to do it, I was already under a record deadline.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Nov. 14, 2002 – A Stuart man experienced a few complications before learning he’d won a $100,000 Iowa Lottery prize.
Roy “Chuck” Avey said his newspaper wasn’t delivered, so he couldn’t check the winning numbers as usual. So, he went to his son’s house and got the numbers from the newspaper there. But he’d left his ticket at home, so after opening his antique stores for the day, he called his wife.
“I read the numbers off to her and she said, ‘Those are the numbers on the ticket!’” Avey said.

Welcome to Harold Timmons' var site="s12harold" Chuck Wagon Gang Pages Updated 01/28/02 Harold Timmons Welcome to my website on the legendary Chuck Wagon Gang. A life-long fan since childhood, in 1985 I became their first and to-date only pianist from 1985-1994. This was a wonderful experience in my career, as I was involved in all aspects of their work. The group also provided background vocals on my piano instrumental recording. While no longer affiliated with the group, my love for their music has continued. Over the years I have collected all of their recordings, even the obscure ones, as well as a lot of memorabilia, and for over 25 years, I have been the source for all of their music as well as other artists. This site is not affiliated with the group in any way, other than the fact that I am an alumni and have always carried their recordings. In the near future, I will be sharing many pictures of my years with Gang and memorabilia from earlier years. I will also include some pictures of my eigjt years as pianist for The Hemphills. Please check back often. NOTES: Several recordings on this page are discontinued, and no longer available through any source, as we bought the last copies from manufacturers when they were discontinued. Order while you can get them.

Martin Ashley, 2000 Martin Ashley writes: The telephone rang early one morning at my "day job," a United States Army recording studio in El Paso, Texas. It was my friend Johnny Hyde , who I had worked with a couple of years before at KXOA , Sacramento. He was now the Program Director for KROY . I was moonlighting on the 7-Midnight shift at KELP (Top 40), and a year earlier had been with KROD (MOR), both in El Paso. Johnny wanted to know when I was due to get out of the Army. I said next month. That was August 1, 1969, to be exact. I had spoken with Johnny a few months prior when he left KXOA to join KROY as the PD. He said to "…give me a call when you're ready to return to Sacramento." Now, he was asking where was his aircheck of my KELP show. I had procrastinated since I didn't really need a job. Then Johnny commented, "…well, I like to hear the Jocks I hire." Hire? I was hired? But I was due to return to KXOA once my Army "obligation" was over. As I fumbled for a piece of paper, Johnny became more emphatic, "I need you at KROY. We'll see you on August 2nd!" At this point I had no idea what a mega-station KROY had become in my two years absence. So I naively said "okay…see you on the 2nd." And that's how I got the best radio job in my 34-year career.

http://www.ioc.net/~artboy/P/close.html
In pursuit of pure realism Chuck Close used a modernist grid to slice up photographs for translation to his monumental airbrushed canvases.
And somewhere along the way he realized that while you could fill the grid squares with tightly rendered airbrush work of pores and hairs and such, you could also translate density, hue and saturation to some alternative space - to create, as I like to call them, faux fractals. That is to take repeating data at ever decreasing scales and simply replace them with, as Roy Lichtenstein called them, small paintings.
And the faux fractals could be small paintings of lozenges and dots, or thumbprints or cross hatchings or multivalued paper pulp. In a sense we're exploring the structure that holds up the Hollywood Sign, the things that live inside the wires.
Here's an excerpt from an amazing 1995 conversation he had with Roy Lichtenstein:
Close: I love how the Benday dots really were content, and how in that wonderful painting of the magnifying glass the dots are simply bigger inside the frame of glass
Lichtenstein: I can see it in your work, of course, because the mark that is supposed to symbolize a highlight or a shadow is itself a decorative thing; it could be a painting.
