Roy’s Route 66 Double Cheeseburger
It gets real darn hot here in Amboy. So hot in fact, we often cook our burgers on the hood of sheriffs Wilson’s ’63 Mercury. Contrary to popular belief, the secret ingredient in a Roy’s Route 66 Double Cheeseburger is not desert road kill. To prove it, I’m giving you the recipe that keeps the customers coming back for our legendary burgers. 8 ounces of lean ground beef 4 slices of good ol’ processed American cheese two thin slices of eye watering red onion 4 thin slices of tomato 2 leaves of crisp lettuce, (torn) relish, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise to taste sesame seed bun, lightly toasted Divide ground beef in two, shape into patties and throw it on the grill to desired taste. Just before its ready, slap on the cheese. Dress up the bun with your condiments, then layer as follows: One patty with cheese, one onion slice, two slices of tomato, one leaf of lettuce, then repeat with one patty with cheese, one onion slice, two slices of tomato, one leaf of lettuce. Now add the top of the bun.

This report of all USMS All-Americans and each year they were named is new and your help is needed to improve it. Whereever one swimmer's All-American honors are divided over more than one name, as might happen when names are changed in marriage, we should change all information to the current name. Please report any data you observe where this correction needs to be made. Further, this report is made possible by the use of a "permanent swimmer id code" . When the "permanent swimmer id code" is assigned to one swimmer, it will never be assigned to another. The intent is to continue to use the same code even when the swimmer stops swimming so that the clear identification of this person and his or her swimming records will never be never lost. So, please report multiple names for the same person, or any missing information, or other comments, by clicking on the mailbox above or below. http://www.mmmfiles.com/lcj/crj.htm
Cele Roehrig Jorgensen, 1905-1989 Mother was not getting better. Aside from this recent encounter with pneumonia, she was continually and steadily declining. And for the last three months, since Christmas, this decline had been increasingly rapid, very depressing to witness, and painful to experience. My last conversation with mother took place on March 13. As is my habit, I regularly write things down in notebooks; so I have a record of that last conversation. I had gotten to the nursing home shortly after lunch. Mother was slouched over in her wheel chair, in her room, an uneaten tray of pureed food in front of her. I wheeled her outside onto the patio for some sun. Mostly she just wanted to go back to bed, but I tried to get her mind going. That April 5 morning, Lynn and I had some business to take care of, after which we drove over to the Nursing Home. Lynn got there a few minutes before me. When I arrived, Lynn was standing outside of the door, crying. I guessed. It was very strange seeing mother lying there. I was glad for her that it was over; I was glad for everyone. But I sure felt strange, sad, depressed. I still do. Our Mother had had the Last Rites of the Catholic Church at least twice in recent months that I know of. This time was too quick. However, the next day a most charming priest, visiting the local parish from Malta, joined Roy (who had driven much of the previous night from San Francisco), Lynn and me at the mortuary. We said our goodbyes. And as the priest spoke the appropriate prayers, Lynn placed three roses on the body, one for each of us.

The Yanks are Coming Spring 1942 found many American service personnel stationed in Northern Ireland, as part of the United States reaction to the events of 7th December 1941, and the attack on Pearl Harbor naval base. Preparations for war were underway, and yet many were experiencing a lull before the storm. Chuck Leighton, of the 119th Engineers, spent the most idyllic part of his stay on the banks of Lough Erne.
Chuck Leighton
Just as the censored portions of Bob Reed's letters remind us that serious military preparations formed the true subtext of the Gl's reports, so too Leighton recalls a moment that put his lovely lakeside stay in context.
I knew that base was made for sea planes to fly Atlantic patrols. It was very well camouflaged. Those Quonset huts were all out there among the trees. I remember one day a guy from our company was hanging out his laundry on a clothes line he'd rigged up from tree to tree. Our sergeant in the engineers was an American Indian. His name was Milt Sessions. He was from the Black Hills of South Dakota. He had a permanent rank of sergeant that was given him by Congress. No one could break him. Milt saw a guy hanging out his underwear. We had dark brown shirts, green underwear and shorts. But this fellow had white ones and he put them out on the laundry line. The American Indian, Milt Sessions, came out. He took an axe and threw it maybe ten yards. It struck into the tree and cut that rope. He said, "Get your damned white laundry off that!" Everything was camouflaged except for the underwear among those trees! Milt Sessions said, "Now wash them again!"
