th of May, 2000 A lthough he is best known for his portrayal of Tuvok , the logical Vulcan, on Star Trek: Voyager , Tim Russ is also an accomplished musician. During a short tour of the UK he graced Bournemouth with an evening of live entertainment; talking about his experiences on Voyager and singing a selection of songs from his album. N eil Norman is a widely diversified player in the music industry. The award-winning producer/performer is a driving force in bringing very intriguing genres of music to the public - world beat, rock, surf, power instrumental, state-of-the-art reissues, but especially Science Fiction! Tim Russ and Music
NEW!
For more information scroll down to the bottom of the page. Tim's musical career is probably even longer than his acting career. He plays the guitar and does the vocals and started performing when he was still in school. There has been a time when he made a living as a musician, playing in bars every night. When he started getting more and more acting jobs music took a little bit of a back seat, though he continued to perform at least one gig every 2 or 3 months, to stay in practice. When Tim began his work on Voyager and started singing at conventions a larger audience became aware of his talents. Since several other Star Trek actors had done it before, we started asking him when he'd be putting out his first CD. Don't ask me why, but it took him almost four years before he finally decided he'd try that avenue. His debut album, "Only a Dream in Rio", was pretty successful with the audience and around that same time Neil Norman from Crescendo Records met Tim at a convention and Tim sang with Neil Norman's band. Norman was impressed and the two started working together more often. A second, much longer CD was the result - plus a concert tour through Europe and various performances at conventions, at Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas and at other occasions followed. Those concerts became soon very popular and Tim issued his third CD, "Kushangaza". But "Kushangaza" is not the last! Tim's latest CD, "Brave New World" has just been released and was sold for the first time at a convention in Italy in March 2003. For more information on this latest project scroll to the bottom of this page!

Tim Russ
Tim Russ stars as Tuvok, a Vulcan who serves as the Starfleet Tactical/Security Officer aboard the starship U.S.S. Voyager in Star Trek: Voyager. While U.S.S. Voyager treks through the uncharted Delta Quadrant, Tuvok's powerful combination of wisdom, experience and physical skills make him a valued crewmember. How does Tim feel about playing the emotionless Vulcan? "I can identify with Tuvok in that we both believe in the power of logic," he responds. Born into a military family in Washington, D.C., Tim was raised on Air Force bases around the world. He and his younger brother and sister spent time in the Orient and the Middle East before his family finally settled in Sacramento. Russ feels there is a direct correlation between growing up in a military family and being an actor. Each experience has elements of insecurity, and both are unpredictable by nature. Russ' first professional job came while he was at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, when he appeared in a PBS Masterpiece Theater production. But it wasn't until 1985, eight years later, that he began to work full time at his trade. While Tim's efforts have been split equally between film, television and stage, his most memorable roles to date have been in television. Russ starred as Sam Jones' computer-whiz compadre in the NBC primetime series The Highwayman , and he appeared as the Answering Machine Guy in the NBC comedy "The People Next Door ." This role found him playing an annoying alter-ego character who resided in series star Jeffrey Jones' answering machine. In addition, Tim had a recurring part in the syndicated drama Arresting Behavior, which was loosely based on the reality program Cops, and he made guest appearances in Freddy's Nightmares with star Robert Englund, and the NBC pilot "Journey To The Center Of The Earth." Russ has also appeared in numerous telefilm projects. He portrayed a deputy sheriff in "Dead Silence," and was cast opposite actress Virginia Madsen in the USA cable movie "Bitter Vengeance." One of Tim's most memorable roles was that of a military corporal in "Heroes of the Storm," a television movie that depicted true-life stories from survivors of Desert Storm.

(GNP/Crescendo) Star Trek: Voyager 's Tim Russ (Tuvok) sheds his Vulcan persona for this unexpectedly skilled CD, which features eight covers of familiar tunes by artists such as Cat Stevens, Robert Johnson, and Bruce Hornsby, along with three original numbers. Highlights include Russ's zestful performance on the self-penned composition "I Can't Imagine," plus a heartfelt reading of Randy Newman's "Louisiana." Famed sci-fi music producer Neil Norman and his Cosmic Orchestra serve as the backup band, lending a polished sound to the brief (40 minute) yet engaging collection which nicely showcases the actor's capable vocal talents. Rating: 6

Tim Russ
So impressed was I with Tim "Tuvok" Russ's self-published EP a couple of years ago that I happily picked up his new solo effort, backed up by Neil Norman and the Cosmic Orchestra (a band which is fast gaining a reputation as the de facto musical ensemble at science fiction conventions) and released on Norman's GNP Crescendo Records label. And Russ still has it - the guy can sing. And covers such as Crossroads and Money Talks demonstrate that Russ may be missing his greatest calling: the man is a fantastic blues vocalist.
He has all the pre-requisite growliness necessary to pass muster with the blues, which you might not guess from hearing him emotionlessly intone technobabble every week on Voyager. Some other surprising covers also emerge: Cat Stevens' Where Do The Children Play? , Randy Newman's Louisiana (the only holdover from Tim's Only A Dream In Rio EP), Bruce Hornsby's Great Divide , and Stephen Stills' sixties anthem, Love The One You're With . There are also three originals: I Can't Imagine Crazy , and Strangers , the latter two of which especially hint at some hidden songwriting talent.

Tim Russ's Filmography
Starlog 2000 (Aug. #277)
Vulcan Love Songs
Tim Russ can sing. Unlike a few of his Star Trek predecessorsare you listening, Bill Shatner?who recorded and distorted music in past, the Voyager co-star can carry a tune. We kid you not. The proof is on a little disc appropriately entitled Tim Russ. Released in late May, it features the artist currently known as Tuvok crooning a range of songs from the sedate "Crazy" to the more up-tempo "Love the One You're With." And, not content to let the album itself do all the talking, Russ is out on the road, singing his heart out and proving that what you hear is what you get and not recording studio sleight-of-hand.
"So far the reaction to the CD has been very postive and the tour has been very positive and the tour has been going very smoothly," Russ reports during his Star Trek Voyager summer hiatus. "We've had four gigs in Europe so far, and we're going to our fifth one shortly, in Germany. We did several shows in England, and people seemed to like it a lot. I'll be back in the United States soon, and we've got a few more shows set up in June and July. I know we've got one in Oklahoma and one in New Mexico, and there are [at] least a couple of others."
