THE PILGRIMAGE TO MAKKAH
When he was in Makkah, Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz wrote a letter to his loyal assistants in Harlem... from his heart: "Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the Holy Scriptures. For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors. "I have been blessed to visit the Holy City of Mecca, I have made my seven circuits around the Ka'ba, led by a young Mutawaf named Muhammad, I drank water from the well of the Zam Zam. I ran seven times back and forth between the hills of Mt. Al-Safa and Al Marwah. I have prayed in the ancient city of Mina, and I have prayed on Mt. Arafat." "There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and non-white." "America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America would have been considered white - but the white attitude was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. I have never before seen sincere and true brotherhood practiced by all colors together, irrespective of their color."

Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz a.k.a Malcolm X
This page is in honor of the great leader, Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz a.k.a Malcolm X. I became fascinated with Malcolm X in 9th grade when I came upon his book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X . Before reading the book, I knew little to nothing about the man that I now have come to admire and respect so much. My summary Timeline The Autobiography Speech/Picture ... Eulogy Malcolm X was born as Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska. He later changed his surname to X because he believed Little was the last name of a white slave owner; X stands for his unknown African name. Malcolm X spent his childhood in Lansing, Michigan. He grew up disliking much of the white race. This was mainly because of how he saw most black people being treated by whites and how the Ku Klux Klan repeatedly harassed his father, a Baptist minister. In the autobiography, Malcolm X mentions a day in 1931 when he found his father run over by a street car, his skull on one side, severely crushed in. To add to Malcolm's distress, his mother was soon declared mentally ill and was sent to the Kalamazoo Mental Facility , which broke up the large family.

THE BLACK BOOK:
THE TRUE POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY OF MALCOLM X
(El Hajj Malik El Shabazz)
ed. by Y.N. Kly
ISBN: 0-932863-03-5, 104 pp., 1986, $9.95 Sixth printing Now in its sixth printing, this highly popular book on the great African-American Muslim illustrates the influence of his Islamic faith and his international experience upon his constantly expanding political vision. The first to present a comprehensive analysis that integrates the developing vision of the man, Malcolm X, with the man he became, El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, it provides an in-depth analysis of Malcolm's directives on why the African-American struggle for national liberation and self-determination is necessary, how it should be carried on, and why it can succeed.
"Numerous works have been written on the life and ideals of Malcolm X by a marxist, liberal, communist, capitalist or Black Power follower which, obviously, paid scant regard to the total Islamic commitment of Malcolm X. Therefore, this contribution by a Muslim to clarify and analyze in depth the ideals of Malcolm X on the basis of the Qur'an and Sunnah is long overdue... Kly makes an excellent comparative study of Malcolm's ideological moorings in Islam... Highly recommended to any serious radical scholar..." Jamalludien Ahmed Hamdulah

Little, Malcom (1925-65)
African-American nationalist leader, born in Omaha, NE. Imprisoned for burglary in 1946, he was converted to the Black Muclim sect led by Elijah Muhammad. On his release in 1953, he assumed his new name [Malcom X], and won a large following on speaking tours on behalf of the sect, pressing for black separatism and the use of violence in self-defence. In 1964, following a trip to Mecca, his views changed, and he founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity. A factional feud ensued, culminating in his assassination by Black Muslim enemies during a rally in Harlem. SIGH.
You'd think that the man Time magazine dubbed "the angriest black man in America," the major catalyst for the black power movement in the United States, and arguably the most important (powerful, influential) black person in the twentieth century would get a less marginal treatment than that. One basic fact should not be omitted, however, and that's that he went through four incarnations, each with a different name. He was born Malcom Little, but took on the name "Detroit Red" in his street hustling years. Within the Nation Of Islam, he went by the name of Malcom X, by which he is most widely known in America to this day. But after his excommunication from the NOI, he made the Hajj to Mecca and was given the new name "El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz". He is survived by his wife Betty Shabazz, still an activist to this day. Another point that should not be glossed over is that to this day the Nation does not claim responsability for Malcom's murder. It is also widely known that there was a copious undercover police presence in the hall when he was killed. I'm sure the FBI has a very thick file on him that would make for quite interesting reading . . .

AL-HAJJ MALIK EL-SHABAZZ: MALCOM X Twenty-five years after his death, Malcolm X, Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, still towers above the statue of liberty. He refuses to die. Wherever injustice and oppression takes place, his smiling face and uncompromising message fill the atmosphere. Yes, they killed the body but not the spirit. When he was alive, Brother Shabazz was the most feared man in America. And, the most loved. The situation hasn't changed. For the deprived and the oppressed African-Americans, Brother Shabazz continues to be the hero, the inspiration that makes it possible for them to maintain their sanity and dignity in a vile society which can't stop despising them. We, as Muslims, are often angered to see Br. Shabazz identified as a Black Nationalist rather than a Muslim. While the anger is justified, we must understand that people generally emphasize the aspect of a leader's life which is in harmony with their own aspirations. While some African-Americans will continue to invoke the nationalist side of Br. Shabazz, it is for us to see that his Islamic personality is projected to the world!

Malcolm X, the most beloved Afro-American and more feared, “the angriest black in America” - as him autodefiniva - murdered in 1965 to alone trentanoves years to have wanted “to change the world”, one can be considered some brightest revolutionary thinkers of the twentieth century a political leader of world stature and great charisma.
From small criminal of the ghetto, drug addict, one of the so many parasites of the rich American society, after being “fallen touching the fund of the society of the American white”, Malcolm Little became a critical spirit, a great orator, a political of international fame.
It is a lot of difficulty to say once and for all who Malcolm X was, an extremely complex character, that one continuous has lived and suffered transformation of his/her own vision of the world, an ascent toward a more and more mature political conscience. In all the phases of his life, from the hate to the reconciliation, every time he was convinced and sincere, but only in the last two years of life it was able to reason in autonomous way and to go out of the jails of the mind that cieco. had made him/it

GREAT MUSLIMS OF THE 20 TH CENTURY No. 2 El-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz By Sulayman S. Nyang, Ph.D. In an attempt to understand the spiritual journey of Malik Shabazz, we must examine how he related to these ideas of Mr. Muhammad and the manner in which his life changed following his encounter with the orthodox Islam. This image of Malcolm X underwent a change only in the last two years of his life. In November 1993, following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X made a statement which soon drove a wedge between him and Mr. Muhammad. He was reported in the US press as saying that the slaying of the US President was a clear case of "the chickens coming home to roost." To Malcolm X the US was a violent society and violence had for long been unleashed against Blacks. When the President himself could be gunned down in cold blood by an assassin you have nothing else to say in defense of America. After his break with Elijah Muhammad, he changed his name to Malik el-Shabazz. The Muslim honorific title El-Hajj would later be added to his name after his trip to Makkah to perform the Hajj. The new Malik Shabazz also chose the mainstream Sunni Islam as his religious creed. In doing so he became the vocal denouncer of his former master and his teachings. He confessed to several audiences around the US and abroad that his activities and speeches gave greater visibility to the heretical teaching of the NOI. He told his audiences that now that he has seen the light of true Islam, he would do everything to teach, elucidate and pass on the true teachings of Islam to African-American. This new mission of Mr. Shabazz endeared him to the small minority of African-American Sunnis who had previously seen him as an agent of a diabolical movement and a perpetrator of the greatest sin in Islam

Lessons For Leaders
The Martyrdom of Hajj Malik El Shabazz
Sheikh Heesham Jaaber
(Led the funeral prayers of Hajj Malik Shabazz)
Death is the miserable fate of a humble people who accept scorn in order to remain alive.
Death chooses those who are not brave enough to choose martyrdom.
On February 21, 1965, Hajj Malik El Shabazz was killed and now stands among the ranks of all those martyrs in the cause of Islam. Much has been written and much more said, about Hajj Malik since that time, with many seeking to define the role he played in the history of the African-American's struggle for freedom. The proponents or survivors of the African diaspora explain him one way, while our pseudo (innovation oriented) intellectuals explain him another. Recently, I have come to realize that we cannot explain Hajj Malik without understanding the Islamic concept of martyrdom.
He chose martyrdom not because of imitation, but because of an enlightened mind which understood that ignorance and poverty were not the glorification of Allah and that Allah does not reveal Himself through cowards.
Hajj Malik reminded America that it was the unwillingness to understand about the total self (by encouraging the lopsided development of the human personality) that spawned the conflicts between the sacred and the secular and between the spiritual and the mundane. This, in my estimation, is the basis for the prevalent double standards, hypocrisy, racial discrimination, exploitation and imperialism.
