Malcolm X Civil Right Leader
Biography:
Malcolm X (nee Malcolm Little) was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska and was shot to death in Harlem's Audubon Ballroom in New York City on February 21, 1965. Malcolm was the son of the Reverend Earl and Louise Little. He married Betty Shabazz and had six children.
John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Malcolm X were all assassinated martyrs of the 1960's. These four men believed in the possibility for social change and the necessity of that change. Of the four, Malcolm X came from the humblest roots, was the most radical, and displayed the most anger. He often said, "All Negroes are angry and I am the angriest."
Many Americans, white and black, were afraid of Malcolm X's seemingly violent side. Unlike the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X believed in using self-defense against overt racism. The life of Malcolm X cannot be summed up in a few simple phrases because of the complex nature of the man and the philosophical shifts he made in search of social truth. He had three names: Malcolm Little, Malcolm X, and El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. Each name has its own history.
Malcolm Little's father was a Baptist minister and a follower of Marcus Garvey, leader of the "Back to Africa" movement popular among African Americans in the 1920's. One of Malcolm's first memories was the burning of his house by the Ku Klux Klan. His father was murdered when Malcolm was still a child, allegedly by the Klan.

Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz)
The 22nd stamp in the Black Heritage series honors Malcolm X, one of the most influential African-American leaders of the 1960s. His controversial ideas sharpened America's debate about racial relations and strategies for social change. Born Malcolm Little in 1925, Malcolm X became the most visible spokesperson for the Nation of Islam in the early 1960s. He later broke away from the organization, disavowed his earlier separatist preaching and supported a more integrationist solution to racial problems. Under the name El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, he attempted to organize an independent movement to put his new ideas into effect. On Feb. 21, 1965, he was shot to death while giving a speech to his followers in Harlem. The photograph featured on the stamp was taken by the Associated Press at a press conference in New York City on May 21, 1964.

Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz) and the Black Power Movement Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz)
After his parole in 1952, Malcolm X undertook organizational work for the Nation of Islam under the guidance of Elijah Muhammad. As a minister Malcolm founded mosques in Boston, Philadelphia, Harlem and elsewhere and made the national expansion of the movement possible. Malcolm's ideology was expressed in his fiery orations, newspaper columns as well as radio and television interviews. In addition, he helped to found the NOI newspaper Muhammad Speaks On February 21, 1964 in front of a crowd in the Audubon Ballroom in New York City, Malcolm X was shot to death by three men. Labeled as angry NOI members, the three were convicted with Malcolm's death. However a host of suspicious events and contradictory information presented at the trial have led many to speculate whether more sinister forces, namely the US government, may have been behind his death. The only acquaintance of Malcolm to attempt to prove this point immediately following death, Leon Ameer, died of a sleeping pill overdose before his case could be presented. Thus Malcolm's life, like his death, has remained shrouded in mystery. But even beyond death, El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz inspired generations for decades to come. His views and ideologies on black nationalism and Pan-Africanism would be picked up by many. His fascinating life, teachings, and tragic death would make him both a martyr and a model for the era of Black Power that was soon to come.

Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X): Letter from Makkah
Excerpted from The Autobiography of Malcolm X Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (also known as Malcolm X) was a Muslim leader whose life had an impact on millions of people. His personal struggle to find the Truth, and his struggle against the injustices around him, continue to inspire Muslims. El-Shabazz performed Hajj in 1964 (one year before he was assassinated) and it was a transformative experience for him. This is the letter he wrote from Makkah to his loyal assistants in Harlem, New York:
Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the Holy Scriptures. For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors. I have been blessed to visit the Holy City of Mecca, I have made my seven circuits around the Ka'bah, led by a young Mutawaf named Muhammad. I drank water from the well of the Zam Zam. I ran seven times back and forth between the hills of Mt. Al-Safa and Al Marwah. I have prayed in the ancient city of Mina, and I have prayed on Mt. Arafat.
