It was a 1971 guest spot on the 'The Merv Griffin Show' that convinced CBS programming head Fred Silverman that Sonny and Cher, one of the top touring acts of the Sixties (who's hits dried up in 1967), could be the network's next big thing. When The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour debuted on CBS the first day of August in 1971 as a five-week summer replacement series, it was an immediate ratings hit. The bright musical arrangements interspersed with humorous on-stage bickering from the husband and wife team scored big in the lounges they were performing in, and this translated well into television. This was an act that many say was largely inspired by Louis Prima and Keely Smith's long-running Las Vegas routine. CBS was looking to regain the young audience they lost when they canceled the popular but controversial Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour two years earlier and Sonny and Cher proved to be the show the network was looking for.

The Beat Goes On: The Best of Sonny and Cher
more... Sonny And Cher Send This To A Friend! Add this to My Favorites Synopsis Without a doubt, Sonny and Cher was the celebrity couple that defined the 1970’s. Although they had scored their biggest musical successes in the late 1960’s with songs like “I Got You Babe” and “The Beat Goes On,” they achieved even greater prominence in the entertainment world through their lengthy and legendary stint as all-around entertainers on their classic 1970’s variety show, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour (later retitled The Sonny and Cher Show ). This long-running program entertained audiences near and far as it raised Sonny and Cher from hitmakers to pop icons. The Sonny and Cher television dynasty was sparked by a 1971 appearance on The Merv Griffin Show . Following a style that they had developed in their Vegas lounge act, the duo traded sweet songs and comic barbs in a style that was ideally suited to television. CBS executive Fred Silverman took note of their natural chemistry and signed the duo for their own variety show. The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour debuted as a summer replacement show in the summer of 1971.

8. The Sonny And Cher Shows
Part Four The Return Of sonny and cher. The last episode broadcast wasactually a rerun of an original 'sonny and cher Comedy Hour'.
http://www.tvparty.com/sonnycher4.html
Part Four: The Return Of Sonny and Cher Sunday night February 1, 1976, just a month after the 'Cher' show went off the air, with Cher pregnant by her estranged new husband (rock star Greg Allman) 'The Sonny and Cher Show' debuted to top-ten ratings and high expectations. "When we go out there in front of our first audience tonight ", Sonny Bono commented during the first episode taping, "we'll be telling them everything they already knew about Sonny and Cher, but were afraid to ask."
The new series was produced by Nick Vanoff ( The Hollywood Palace ) and featured regulars Ted Zeigler, Billy Van, mime act Shields and Yarnell, and Galaird Sartain (the 'Cher' show's only regular and future 'Hee-Haw' player). Of course daughter Chastity Bono was on hand to help them say goodnight. At least by now she could talk. CBS censors took a stronger look at this new show, now on an hour earlier than the original series to attract the youngsters. The network complained that Cher's clothes and image were not appropriate for a recent divorcee. "Suddenly I should start coming off like Julie Andrews" was Cher's answer, "Hell, Sonny didn't die." The show's ratings fell steadily o ver the next few weeks, as did the quality of the skits. For legal reasons, it was decided that none of the characters or situations from the previous Sonny and Cher program could be reprised for this new hour. The new regular features the creative staff came up with (like 'Sonnytone News') were awful. Still, based on the early strong ratings, the show was renewed for a second season.

Variety shows were popular television fodder during the 1970s. Many TV studios felt that all they needed was a big name star, a few good jokes, a dash of flash, and some bubbly music to create a variety series for the viewing audience. Unfortunately, most of these programs vanished from the airwaves almost as quickly as they appeared. Ever heard of "The New Bill Cosby Show," "The Brady Bunch Hour," "The Don Knotts Show," or "The Glenn Campbell Goodtime Hour?" From the slew of short-lived flops rose a few notable standouts "Donny & Marie" and "The Flip Wilson Show " They are among the handful of variety shows that lasted for more than one season. "The Flip Wilson Show" did even better than that by shooting to the 2 spot of the Nielsen Ratings during its first year. Not as commercially successful, but probably the most-remembered variety series of the ‘70s is "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour." Introduced as a trial run in the summer of 1971, Sonny and Salvatore Bono and Cherilyn LaPiere were the main characters of an unlikely success story. They met in the mid-60s while Sonny was a struggling songwriter/musician and Cher an aspiring actress and singer. It wasn’t long before they were married and teamed up to spend almost a decade performing in clubs and auditoriums. Considered "rock freaks" by other musicians and much of the public, the Bono’s sported unconventional bangs and fur vests. They didn’t seem to fit in, but Sonny was determined that their talent would prevail. What he didn’t know was that their tours allowed them to hone their greatest future asset, the sadistic interplay between husband and wife on stage.

more... Sonny and Cher Send This To A Friend! Add this to My Favorites Synopsis See Also Prime Time Sonny And Cher “Then put your little hand in mine, There ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb, Babe, I got you, babe, I got you, babe…” Sonny and Cher were the ultimate showbiz couple. Beginning with a string of lush romantic hits in the late 60’s, the two sang and joked their way to top. The hits led to a steady stream of stage and television appearances that made Sonny and Cher international favorites and cultural icons. As a result, their image was just as famous as their sound. Salvatore Bono was a struggling songwriter and producer when he met aspiring singer Cherilyn Sarkisian in 1962. The two soon married and formed a singing duo, ‘Caesar and Cleo.’ They switched to their nicknames, Sonny and Cher, when they signed with Atlantic Records. Sonny had previously worked with producing legend Phil Spector and cleverly applied his old boss’ ‘wall of sound’ production style to songs that mixed folk and psychedelia. They had their first hit with “I Got You, Babe,” which featured the singers declaring undying love to each other over a surging, orchestral music track. It was an instant #1 hit. Sonny and Cher soon hit the airwaves to promote “I Got You, Babe,” causing a sensation with their long hair and bellbottoms-and-hair-vests attire. When Sonny and Cher were ejected from a restaurant for their appearance, Sonny penned a song in response. “Laugh At Me” was a powerful, folk-rocking tribute to individuality and was performed solo by Sonny. It became a Top-10 hit and was later covered by glam-rockers Mott The Hoople. Meanwhile, Cher racked up a Sonny-produced solo hit with her cover of the Bob Dylan

Sonny and Cher
Sonny and Cher proved one of the magical musical combinations of the mid '60s and one of the better rock-influenced acts of the early '70s, their wisecracking repartee providing counterpoint to a series of adoring hit duets. Salvatore "Sonny" Bono (b. Feb. 16, 1935) started out at Los Angeles-based Specialty Records as a songwriter in the late '50s, responsible for "Koko Joe" by Don and Dewey and "She Said Yeah" for Larry Williams, which was later covered by the Rolling Stones and the Righteous Brothers. Bono became a protégé of Phil Spector, managing to write a handful of successful songs, most notably "Needles and Pins" in collaboration with his protégé Jack Nitzsche, which became a success for Jackie DeShannon and a huge international hit for the Searchers. In 1964, while working on sessions with Phil Spector, Sonny met an 18-year-old, would-be singer named Cherilyn Sarkasian Lapierre (b. May 20, 1946), at a coffee shop next to a Los Angeles radio station. She had earlier recorded the Spector-produced single "Ringo, I Love You" (released under the name Bonnie Jo Mason). The two were later married and formed a professional duet, initially known as Caesar and Cleo. The two released the singles "The Letter", "Do You Wanna Dance" and "Love Is Strange", with little effect. It was only after they were signed to Atlantic Records as Sonny and Cher that success came their way. The couple embarked on parallel careers, with Cher later signed to Liberty/Imperial Records as a solo act.
