Aaron. Aaron. Aaron. Aaron. I know you're not a total idiot, but I have to ask: Hasn't anyone ever explained to you that the wrong music can absolutely wreck a scene? Your Music Supervisor, Ann Kline, seems like the sensible sort. What on earth possessed the two of you to go with cheesy-sounding, distracting folk music during CJ's big scene? It was a mistake. A bad one. It ruined the impact of the entire scene. Is there some sort of directive to dumb down the show? Sure, the pompous strings are a bit much - in the other direction - but you know there's a middle ground, right? Are you concerned that the show appears too sophisticated? Seriously Aaron, don't let it happen again. Posted by skarlet at May 23, 2002 11:26 AM

Aaron Sorkin Biography
Sorkin won critical praise and the attention of Hollywood with his first Broadway play "A Few Good Men", a courtroom melodrama with a military setting. He garnered notice for having sold the screen rights to David Brown before the stage play was produced. The neophyte won a 1991 Golden Globe nomination for his screen adaptation, which was directed by Rob Reiner and attracted high powered actors like Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson. Sorkin went on to co-write the story and screenplay for the suspenser "Malice" (1993). In 1995, he reteamed with Reiner on the well-received romantic comedy "The American President". Sorkin segued to the small screen as creator and writer of "Sports Night" (ABC, 1998-2000), a comedy-drama about the behind the scenes goings on at a cable sports channel. With a strong ensemble and well-crafted dialogue, the show became a critics' darling but struggled in the ratings. Although the network's commitment was sometimes in doubt, the show managed to return for a second season. In 1999, Sorkin drew on his film experience on "The American President" to create the NBC ensemble drama "The West Wing". Once again, critics lavished praise on the quality of the writing and the acting (led by Martin Sheen as the US President). Despite a highly publicized drug arrest in an airport in 2001, Sorkin continued to write acclaimed episodes of "The West Wing" and was again nominated for an Emmy in 2002.

Thriving TV writer Aaron Sorkin faces his insecurities head on
By Chuck Barney
Knight Ridder Newspapers BURBANK, Calif. A lot of good writers are plagued by insecurities. Few, however, are as open about it as Aaron Sorkin. "I live in constant fear that I don't have an idea for next week," says the 38-year-old creator of, and main writer for, TV's "The West Wing" and "Sports Night." "I'm always thinking that next week is the week the critics are going to go away that everything is going away that it's going to be discovered that this is just a dog-and-pony show and that I can't write." Someone needs to tell the excitable Sorkin to relax. Yes, his characters occasionally give into glib, staccato patter that can be irksome. But much more often, Sorkin's witty touches and rhythmic style infuse his shows with the kind of energy rarely felt on TV. And people have noticed. In a recent Electronic Media poll of the nation's critics, "The West Wing" was honored as the top show of the fall season. "Sports Night" was ranked as the No. 1 comedy. The former is a bona fide hit. The latter got off to a slow start with viewers, but has built some momentum in its sophomore season.

Aaron Sorkin is a man of many words For the writer of 'The West Wing' and 'Sports Night,' dialogue is music to his ears Tuesday, March 7, 2000 By JOHN LEVESQUE
POST-INTELLIGENCER TV CRITIC On a two-hour movie, the average screenplay runs 120 pages. Maybe 125. For "A Few Good Men," Aaron Sorkin's weighed in at 149. For "Schindler's List," on which he did a final "dialogue polish": 183 pages. And when he delivered the first draft of "The American President" to director Rob Reiner five years ago: a sumo-class 385 pages. "I completely fell in love with the sound of my own voice," Sorkin admits. The writerly ringleader of "Sports Night" and "The West Wing" does like to talk. Fast. If there were a speed limit on elocution, he'd be ticketed whenever he opened his mouth. Most of his characters talk the same way. Faster than a politician in a frying pan. Talk fascinates Sorkin. It's what made him become a writer.
