By Joe Garden Ben Stein would be enigmatic if he weren't so good at promoting himself. His biweekly column "Monday Night At Morton's" for E! Online (www.eonline.com) provides a gossipy autobiographical look at the inside of one of Hollywood's hip eateries. He just began writing a regular column for the media-watchdog magazine Brill's Content. He has loaned (or rented) his visage and voice as a pitchman for Clear Eyes, Pizza Hut, and a host of other products. He has published a number of books, including Tommy And Me: The Making Of A Dad , which addresses his relationship with his son. And he appears as the host of the Comedy Central game show Win Ben Stein's Money , in which three contestants attempt to do just that by matching wits with the brainy Stein. (A current promotion offers the viewing audience a chance to win his Super Bowl tickets.) All this may mean nothing to some people, but many of them would still recognize Stein for his lackadaisically delivered defining line"Bueller? Bueller?"in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Ben Stein plays Ferris' Economics and role call teacher, who provides the boring classroom scenes which in contrast highlight how good Ferris' day off really is. Stein's performance as the Economics teacher is so memorable it was recently ranked as one of the 50 most famous scenes in American film. Born on 25 November 1944 in Washington, D.C., Ben Stein was 42 years old at the time of shooting. Stein also writes a regular column in The American Spectator , called Ben Stein's Diary Perhaps the most intriguing thing of his career was the TV series, Win Ben Stein's money , a gameshow in which Ben Stein's salary was actually put up as prizemoney for the contestants so that Stein was really competing with the guests. Like FBDO co-star Lynam Ward (Tom Bueller) Stein appeared in the TV series The Wonder Years as Mr Cantwell in a role not too different from his economics teacher portrayal in FBDO. His other films include Ghostbusters II Soapdish Honeymoon in Vegas with FBDO co-star Robert Kim (Police Officer), Dave (in which he played himself)

Biography Ben Stein has had what may be the most diverse career of anyone now on the national scene. He is in every sense a Renaissance Man. He has been an award winning actor, economist, writer, journalist, and teacher, and is equally well known in America's boardrooms and in America's dormitories and fraternity houses. He is certainly the only man to be a famous humorous teacher about economics and law. Ben Stein was born in Washington D.C., the son of noted economist and writer Herbert Stein. He attended Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he studied alongside future luminaries Sly Stallone, Carl Berstein, Goldie Hawn, and Connie Chung. He received a B.A. with honors from Economics of Columbia, where he was active in the civil rights movement to secure voting and other legal rights for African- Americans. He was valedictorian of his class, by election of his classmates, at Yale Law School class of 1970, where he also worked strenuously part time as a poverty lawyer and as an activist and demonstrator for civil rights and decent treatment of the poor. After graduation, he served as a poverty lawyer in the field of advertising, and a teacher about the political content of the film and TV at American University, UC Santa Cruz and Pepperdine University. Ben Stein was a speechwriter and lawyer for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He also did legal work for Mr. Nixon, in the darkest days of Watergate. He is not; repeat not, "Deep Throat."
