It includes a narrative biography and photograph for each astronaut, cosmonaut or international space traveler who either flew or was selected to do so within the first quarter century of space exploration. If everyone contained within autographed by their entry, you would have a single item documenting humanity's first steps into the solar system. Imposing a rule that every autograph needs to be " in-person ," this presents quite a challenge. However, the collection grows each year, and I continue to hold the hope of completing the project.

E-mail: kt4n@virginia.edu After traveling more than 16 million miles in space, Kathryn Thornton joined the faculty in 1996 as a professor with appointments in the Division of Technology, Culture and Communication, and in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She is also director of the University of Virginia Center for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Education whose goal is to promote excellence in science, mathematics and technology education at all levels in Virginia’s public schools. She earned a B.S. in physics from Auburn University and M.S. and Ph.D. also in physics from the University of Virginia.
Prior to coming to UVa, Thornton served for 12 years as NASA astronaut, flying four space missions, including the first Hubble Space Telescope Service Mission, and logging more than 975 hours in space and over 21 hours of extravehicular activity (space walking). She holds the women’ record for both number and duration of extravehicular activity. Dr. Thornton also headed the NASA Johnson Space Center Education working group which coordinated the educational outreach activities of astronauts and professional educators working under the ”Teaching from Space” contract with Oklahoma State University. Videos, printed materials and live events with school children and astronauts in orbit were some of the products of the group.

Space Shuttle Mission STS-073 STS073-226-010 (20 October - 5 November 1995) - Astronaut Kathryn C. Thornton, payload commander, works at the Drop Physics Module (DPM) onboard the Spacelab science module located in the cargo bay of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia. Thornton, along with four other NASA astronauts and two guest researchers, spent more than two-weeks aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in support of the United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-2) mission. STS073-229-014 (20 October - 5 November 1995) - Astronauts Kathryn C. Thornton, payload commander, and Kenneth D. Bowersox, mission commander, observe a liquid drop's activity at the Drop Physics Module (DPM) in the science module aboard the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia. The drop is partially visible at the center of the left edge of the frame. The two were joined by three other NASA astronauts and two guest researchers for almost 16-days of in-orbit research in support of the U.S. Microgravity Laboratory (USML-2) mission. STS073-230-014 (20 October - 5 November 1995) - Astronaut Kenneth D. Bowersox, commander, uses a camcorder to record United States Microgravity Laboratory 2 (USML-2) activities onboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. Nearby, astronaut Kathryn C. Thornton, payload commander, prepares to open a supply chest to support one of many science experiments conducted by the seven-member crew during the 16-day USML-2 flight.
