TURNER, TED U.S. Media Mogul Undersea Adventures and Audobon Society specials. Turner's holdings are not limited to cable networks, although he also owns Turner Network Television, Turner Classic Movies, Sportsouth and The Cartoon Network. His Turner Entertainment Company manages one of the world's largest film libraries, including the MGM library, licensing broadcast and cable stations to show Hollywood classics such as Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz and Citizen Kane . Production companies include New Line Cinema, Castle Rock Entertainment (which produced Seinfeld), Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, and Turner Pictures Worldwideall programming sources for his cable and broadcast outlets. His Turner Home Entertainment oversees video release of titles from the Turner library, as well as a publishing house, educational services and a division devoted to exploring ways to bring Turner titles on-line. And throughout his career, Turner has endeavored to purchase one of the three major networks, targeting each for takeover as it has become financially vulnerable. But a list of Turner's possessions cannot begin to capture the essence of the personality which has made him one of the entertainment industry's most recognizable figures. He earned the nickname "Captain Outrageous" during his yachting days (capturing America's Cup in 1977 and losing it in 1980), but his reputation for eccentric behavior has not been limited to the sporting arena. When his efforts to "colorize" films from his extensive black and white movie librarythereby broadening the films' appeal to audiences who prefer colorraised the hackles of film lovers and prompted congressional hearings on the authorship and ownership of cinematic texts, Turner threatened to add color to

TURNER BROADCASTING SYSTEM U.S. Media Conglomerate Over the course of three decades, Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) has grown from a regional outdoor advertising firm into one of the world's largest and most successful media conglomerates. Beginning in the late 1960s, Ted Turner changed his father's company, Turner Advertising, first into Turner Communications Company and then into Turner Broadcasting System. Each name change represented a stage in the building of an empire that would come to encompass broadcast television and radio, cable program services, movie and television production companies, home video, and sports teams. TBS began with Turner's purchase of failing Atlanta UHF station, WJRJ, in 1968. He immediately renamed the station WTCG (for Turner Communications Group) and began to look for programming. What Turner found were old movies and syndicated television series, many of which he purchased outright with a view toward unrestricted future showings. He used these to counterprogram the network affiliates, going after such audience segments as children and people who did not watch the news. By the early 1970s, WTCG also offered local sports programmingfirst professional wrestling and then Atlanta Braves baseball, Atlanta Hawks basketball, and Atlanta Flames hockey. In 1976, Turner purchased the Braves, securing long-term access to his single most critical source of programming.

Ted Turner is reportedly furious that the White House publicly released his name as a Clinton overnight Lincoln Bedroom guest. "Angry is the polite word," read an email from a longtime friend of the mogul. The Turner-White House revelation reinforced the notion strongly held by some that CNN is editorially friendly to the liberal aisle, with orders originating from the top. The release of the list by the White House was seen as a master preemptive strike against Congress, which had received a batch of Harold Ickes memories earlier in the week. All indications were that Representative Dan Burton (R-IN) was set to go for blood. Ickes left the White House in January with a blockbuster memo in his possession. (It's a great Washington mystery why Ickes didn't leave the memo behind to live the rest of its life in Lanny Davis' safe.)

    What Was Rupert Murdoch Thinking?
09:07 AM Jun. 13, 1997 PT There was a lot of head-scratching in many quarters this week as News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch made gambits worth about US$3 billion while losing enough face - at least publicly - to make any respectable media mogul just a bit uneasy. By capitulating to the demands of Time Warner Inc. and agreeing to a lopsided deal to sell US satellite assets to Primestar Partners L.P. for about $1.1 billion in debt and equity (roughly a 30 percent stake), Murdoch appears to have bagged his once-ambitious plan to head up a direct-broadcast satellite powerhouse in the United States. Instead, his American Sky Broadcasting (ASkyB) company has signed an agreement basically relegating him to the backfield. He has no voting stake, no board position, basically no say. And that's a lot to swallow for a man made famous by his insistence on control - especially since he had to bend to satisfy his arch enemy, Ted Turner, who's now conveniently vice chairman of Primestar stakeholder Time Warner.

    Crash Video Lands in US
05:07 AM Oct. 02, 1997 PT After more than two years of being dubbed everything from "pure pornography" (by Rex Reed and the Italian press) to "a masterpiece" (by directors such as Bernard Bertollucci and Paul Schrader), David Cronenberg's Crash is finally getting its US video and laserdisc release. Originally slated for a fall 1996 release in the US through Fine Line Features, the picture was pulled at the last minute, allegedly to avoid having it go toe to toe with Hollywood's big-budget Christmas movies. The truth was more disturbing: Ted Turner, whose Turner Communications owns New Line Cinema, of which Fine Line Features is a subsidiary, was so personally disturbed by Crash that he tried to have it blocked from coming into the US at all. Turner only backed down "when a reporter called him on it" during a public appearance in March, MovieWeek reported.
