Ray Walston Biography
Diminutive yet commanding with distinctive vocal resonance and forceful mannerisms, Walston's career has spanned regional theater, Broadway, TV and film. Perhaps best remembered by TV audiences as the curmudgeonly extraterrestrial on the popular CBS comedy "My Favorite Martian" (1963-66), Walston had a successful stage and film career as well as appearances in early TV behind him before taking on the role of Uncle Martin O'Hara. After leaving his native Louisiana, Walston began his acting career in regional theater before landing a role in the legendary Maurice Evans production of "Hamlet" on Broadway in 1945. He worked steadily in New York theater throughout the late 1940s and early 50s, frequently collaborating with celebrated theater producer and director George Abbott. Walston reached his theatrical peak in the musical "Damn Yankees" (1955) playing Applegate, the devil/narrator, a performance which not only made him the toast of Broadway but garnered him a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical too. After guest appearances on anthology TV series "Suspense" and "Playhouse 90" in the 50s, he debuted as a regular on the hit CBS comedy "My Favorite Martian", playing a space alien befriended by Los Angeles reporter Tim O'Hara (Bill Bixby) who eventually passed him off as his Uncle Martin. The series made Walston an American household icon during its three season run, and continued doing well in reruns.

Ray Walston, 1914-2001 Stage, screen and television star Ray Walston, who earned a Tony Award as the devilish Mr. Applegate in "Damn Yankees" and Emmy Awards for his work in the series "Picket Fences", died January 1st, 2001 at his home in Beverly Hills, California. Walston, who appeared in over 100 feature films and TV movies was known to millions less for his Broadway triumphs than for his three years as the star of "My Favorite Martian". Born in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 2nd, 1914, Raymond Walston pursued acting from a young age, starting out as a non-speaking "spear carrier" rounding out productions at local theaters in New Orleans. Walston graduated to small roles and stock companies, where he not only starred in traveling shows but sold tickets and swept stage floors. When Walston's family moved to Texas, it had been assumed that he would join his father in the oil business, but Walston instead joined the Houston Civic Theater's repertory company under Margo Jones, debuting in 1938. Walston spent six years with Ms. Jones's team of actors before heading to Cleveland, Ohio, where he put in three seasons with the Cleveland Playhouse. From Cleveland Walston went on to New York, where he made his Broadway debut in a 1945 production of "Hamlet", and soon found work in projects directed by Jose Ferrer and then George Abbott. Abbott cast Walston opposite fiery dancer-singer-actress

Ray Walston This was my FIRST major success, and holds a special place in my heart!
I loved Ray Walston, in everything he appeared in. I was a kid when 'My Favorite Martian' debuted, and I was glued to my set every Sunday night, when the show aired. I began trying to catch his other work, and enjoyed him for over forty years, in films as diverse as 'Damn Yankees', 'South Pacific', 'Tall Story', 'Kiss Me, Stupid', 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High', and 'Stephen King's The Stand'.
I was determined to write him, and let him know of my admiration (and to ask for a signed photo, of COURSE!) I didn't know about the Star Archive, at that time, so I searched high and low on the 'Net for an address...and I finally FOUND one! I wrote him in longhand, a long and detailed letter about the pleasure he'd given me, all through my life!
And he WROTE BACK! He sent me this terrific photo, and thanked me for the 'very nice letter!' He also slipped in a note, asking me NOT to share the address I'd used...apparently, I'd found his home address!
I was VERY fortunate...Walston was dying, when he wrote me, and stopped signing, altogether, soon after my success.

from Geocities Ray Walston By Steve Gorman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Tony and Emmy-award winning actor Ray Walston, who starred on stage and screen as the devil in ``Damn Yankees'' and was famed for his TV role as the extraterrestrial Uncle Martin in ``My Favorite Martian,'' has died at age 86, his agent says. Walston, who specialized in playing crusty and canny characters, including the judge on the acclaimed series, ``Picket Fences,'' died at his home in Beverly Hills after a short illness, agent Harry Gold said Tuesday. His last screen appearance was in the Oct. 15 season premiere of the CBS hit show ``Touched By An Angel.'' He played a wealthy entrepreneur who cuts his son (Richard Chamberlain) off from the family fortune to teach him there are more valuable things in life than money. Walston, who died New Year's Day, won a Tony Award for best actor in a musical for his Broadway performance as Mr. Applegate, the Devil, in the 1956 hit ``Damn Yankees,'' about an aging baseball fan who sells his soul to help his hapless team, the Washington Senators, win the American League pennant from the unbeatable Yankees of the 1950s. Both Walton and actress-dancer Gwen Verdon, who played the seductress Lola (''Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets''), recreated their roles for the 1958 film adaptation of the musical. Verdon died last year.

"To Illuminate The Life Of The Human Spirit" TheatrGROUP is a permanent ensemble theatre company in St. Louis, Missouri. Its nucleus is the membership of the "Method" acting workshop, which consists of twenty actors who are trained in the techniques and procedures of Constantine Stanislavski and Lee Strasberg.
Casting for plays produced at TheatrGROUP is accomplished from within the workshop. The goal of TheatrGROUP is to bring to St. Louis audiences contemporary and original works performed realistically, and to give actors in the company an artistic home. The theatre is open 24 hours a day to members. "Method" Acting Workshop Our purpose at TheatrGROUP is to train actors (beginning through advanced) in the approach to the actors' art known as "Method" acting, then use this specifically trained ensemble in TheatrGROUP productions.
Simply stated, "Method" acting is acting "real" by using experiences and impressions from the actor's own life to create the life of the character onstage.
