Ray Walston Brief Bio By Harry Governick
Artistic Director, TheatrGROUP
Ray Walston started acting in 1938 at the Margo Jones Players in Houston, Texas. He had wanted to be an actor for a very long time, dreamed about it. At the Margo Jones Players he got his wish. For almost four years he performed in a play a month. It was there, he states, that the audiences taught him something about acting.
When he finished in Houston, Ray went to the Cleveland Playhouse in Ohio, which he says is still the finest Regional Theatre in America. Margo Jones was going to direct there the first play Tennessee Williams ever wrote, called "You Touch Me", taking Ray with her under a two year contract.
During those two years, Ray acted in twenty-two plays. The players there were professionals. The theatre seated 750. With two theatres in the building, Ray was constantly working, rehearsing days and performing nights. He might walk-on in one play and rotate to the lead in the next one. During this period, Ray also worked on workshop productions, which he would show to the company after the evening performance at ten or eleven o'clock.

Walston won the role of Judge Bone after an impressive audition effort. He recalls: " Kelley was there, and a couple of the directors, and when I got finished - you realize Bone was supposed to be a very hard-tempered, tough guy - I threw the script down in my chair, as hard as I could, not looking at any of 'em, walked to the door, opened the door, and slammed it. Actor Ray Walston dead at 86

From: Executive

It was a terrible way to start the new year. The man who was best known from his 1960s sitcom MY FAVORITE MARTIAN for 3 seasons died in his home on Monday, January 1 and he will be missed.
Ray Walston won a Tony Award in 1955 for his stage work in one of the original stars of the musical DAMN YANKEES. He had done a movie musical or two also, such as the film versions of Damn Yankees and SOUTH PACIFIC. More than 40 years later he finally received two Emmys, first in 1995 and again in 1996 for his his dramatic role as Judge Henry Bone in the PICKET FENCES series, which kept him working almost steadily for 4 years.
Ray made guest appearances on numerous dramatic and comedy series over the years, his most notable being as Boothby, the gardener in an episode of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. He sort of got to play that role again, only as an alien (Species 8472) assuming the form of Boothby in his first of two episodes of STAR TREK: VOYAGER. In the other, "The Fight" he played a holographic re-creation of Boothby!

On the Passing of Ray Walston
Aliens have not fared well on television, largely portrayed as either extremely menacing antagonists to the human race (witness V or Earth: Final Conflict ), or played solely for laughs, the ultimate sitcom buffoon (witness A.L.F. or Mork and Mindy ). There have been, however, aliens who portrayed with a sense of style and dignity. Ray Walston gave us such a character. AS "Uncle Martin" on the very old t.v. series My Favorite Martian , he portrayed one of the earliest weekly visitors to Earth with wit and charm. how many of us remember the antennae that appeared from "inside" his skull to render him invisible, or that pointed finger the moved objects magically through the air? He was neither menacing to our world, nor was he the clown, at the butt end of all of our jokes. Ray Walston's portrayal was one of fun, and understanding of the humans with which he was trapped. Rarely did Walston sink to any stereotypes, or to any outlandish behavior. He showed us that simply because we were different, we weren't something to be feared and avoided. I personally credit Ray Walston, and Bill Bixby by extension, with shaping some of my own earlier and lasting attitude of tolerance. After My Favorite Martian

More Than a Martian
Acclaimed (and award-winning) TV star Ray Walston ("My Favorite Martian," "Picket Fences") died New Year's Day in Beverly Hills, aged 86. Walston, who began his career on the New York stage in the 1940s, never retired and worked right up to last fall, when he guest starred on the October season première of "Touched By An Angel." After a Tony-winning Broadway debut in "Damn Yankees," Walston made his film debut in 1957's "Kiss Them For Me," and reprised his "Damn Yankees" role in 1958's screen version. The dapper star then became a household name in the early '60s when he played a friendly, telepathic technogeek from the Red Planet on the sitcom My Favorite Martian. The series was a top ten hit in its first season, but Walston had mixed feelings about his instant fame. "I'm running around with two pieces of wire coming out of my head," he said. "I must be crazy." It took a three-year hiatus from the screen after the show ended in 1966 for Walston to shake the typecasting. He worked steadily throughout the '70s and '80s and won his first Emmy in 1995 (the first of back-to-back statues) for his role as crusty Judge Bone on TV's
