Back To House of Blues Main Page Ethel Waters Ethel Waters, the first Black super star, was born October 31, 1896 in Chester Philadelphia. Ethel Waters fought long and hard to reached star status in the white world of vaudeville, night clubs, Broadway, radio, film and television. Born in extreme poverty to a 12-year-old mother, Louise Anderson, who was raped by a white man, John Waters, she stole food to live. At thirteen her family married her off to an abusive man ten years her senior, she dropped out of sixth grade and found work as a chambermaid. The marriage lasted a year. Her ambition, in those days, was to become a maid/companion to a wealthy white lady. She went into show business instead. In her best-selling autobiography, written in 1951, "His Eye is on the Sparrow," she poignantly tells the story of her trials and tribulations. Her career began with amateur night performances, then slowly she moved to the black theatre circuit, where she was billed as "Sweet Mama Stringbean." In 1921 she began recording under the Black Swan label. It was while at Black Swan she recorded the Blues standards, "Down Home Blues" and "Oh Daddy." In 1925, after introducing the song Dinah at the famous Plantation Club, Columbia Records signed her, and during the next decade she would make many successful recordings. But she drifted away from her Blues roots and became a pop singer. Waters had incredible range and her voice easily travelled from a low E to high F. Her diction was clear and impeccable, colouring the lyrics with the proper influx of emotion. It has been said that without Ethel Waters there would be no Billie Holiday. Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Bing Crosby also imitated her conversational singing style.
