Modern Impacts - The Loss of Forests The People Who Ate People Soon there were too many people, and the forests were cut and animals hunted. After some time of this, animals were totally wiped out. The forests were also destroyed and most vegetation on the island disappeared. At this point, there was only one resource left to use: Humans as food! Many of the people on the island began eating those who had died of starvation. When European ships landed on Easter Island, they found warring bands of people on a destroyed island.
