As a result, they function abnormally and cause small blood clots. These clots give rise to recurrent painful episodes called "sickle cell pain crises". Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Sickle cell anemia is caused by an abnormal type of hemoglobin (oxygen carrying molecule) called hemoglobin S. It is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait that is, it occurs in someone who has inherited hemoglobin S from both parents. Someone who inherits hemoglobin S from one parent and normal hemoglobin (A) from the other parent will have sickle cell trait . Approximately 8% of African Americans have sickle cell trait. Someone who inherits hemoglobin S from one parent and another type of abnormal hemoglobin from the other parent will have another form of sickle cell disease, such as sickle cell-b

Information about Fanconi anemia for patients, families, physicians, andresearch scientists. What Is Fanconi anemia And How Is It Diagnosed?
http://www.fanconi.org/WhatisFA.html
What Is Fanconi Anemia And How Is It Diagnosed? Fanconi anemia (FA), named for Swiss pediatrician, Guido Fanconi, is one of the inherited anemias that leads to bone marrow failure (aplastic anemia). It is a recessive disorder: if both parents carry a defect (mutation) in the same FA gene, each of their children has a 25% chance of inheriting the defective gene from both parents. When this happens, the child will have FA.
There are at least seven FA genes: A, C, D2, E, F, G and BRCA2 (as announced in the article entitled Biallelic Inactivation of BRCA2 in Fanconi Anemia in the July 26, 2002 edition of Science ). Six of these genes have been cloned. These six account for more than 85% of the cases of Fanconi anemia. Mutations in FA-A and FA-C account for FA in 76% of patients worldwide. FA occurs equally in males and females. It is found in all ethnic groups. Though considered primarily a blood disease, it may affect all systems of the body. Many patients eventually develop acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Older patients are extremely likely to develop head and neck, esophogeal, gastrointestinal, vulvar and anal cancers. Patients who have had a successful bone marrow transplant and, thus, are cured of the blood problem associated with FA still must have regular examinations to watch for signs of cancer. Many patients do not reach adulthood.

(See also Iron-deficiency anemia - children. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Iron deficiency anemia is the most common form of anemia . Approximately 20% of women, 50% of pregnant women, and 3% of men are iron deficient. Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin , the oxygen carrying pigment in the blood. Iron is normally obtained through the food in the diet and by the recycling of iron from old red blood cells.
The causes of iron deficiency are too little iron in the diet, poor absorption of iron by the body, and loss of blood (including from heavy menstrual bleeding ). It can also be related to lead poisoning in children.

Click here to learn about how YOU can make a difference! Katy's Story Katelyn Rose Hubbell turned four years old on June 26th 1997, and had a big party at her home in Fisher, Illinois. She was a happy, healthy little girl, until July 11, 1997 when she was diagnosed with a life threatening bone marrow failure disease called Severe Aplastic Anemia. In case you didn't know, bone marrow is the soft spongy material inside your bones that is home to stem cells. Stem Cells are the little factories that produce the three types of blood cells, that along with a liquid called plasma, makes up your blood. In people with Aplastic Anemia, the stem cells are damaged and unable to produce enough blood cells to keep the patient alive. There are three main types of blood cells. White blood cells fight infection by "eating" bacteria and viruses that enter the body. Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen to organs and tissues throughout the body.

    by Debra Anastasio
Student Intern, A.R.E. Clinic Debra Anastasio I first became interested in Edgar Cayce’s remedies a few years ago when I began my training as a Naturopathic physician. Most recently, I have completed some clinical training at the A.R.E. Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, and have learned about the Cayce remedies first-hand. I purchased some reference material and began studying the remedies. In doing so, I made an interesting connection between a Naturopathic protocol for otitis media (a middle ear infection) and Cayce’s readings on collapsed eustachian tubes. The Cayce readings explained that the underlying related condition was anemia. Further research revealed seven cases associating anemia with collapsed eustachian tubes.

    40. Patient Information
Sickle Cell anemia. Sickle Cell anemia is a group of inherited redblood cell disorders. How do you get sickle cell anemia or trait?
    http://www.scinfo.org/sicklept.htm
Sickle Cell Anemia Sickle Cell anemia is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. Normal red blood cells are round like doughnuts, and they move through small blood tubes in the body to deliver oxygen. Sickle red blood cells become hard, sticky and shaped like sickles used to cut wheat. When these hard and pointed red cells go through the small blood tube, they clog the flow and break apart. This can cause pain, damage and a low blood count, or anemia.
What makes the red cell sickle?
There is a substance in the red cell called hemoglobin that carries oxygen inside the cell. One little change in this substance causes the hemoglobin to form long rods in the red cell when it gives away oxygen. These rigid rods change the red cell into a sickle shape instead of the round shape.
How do you get sickle cell anemia or trait?
You inherit the abnormal hemoglobin from your parents, who may be carriers with sickle cell trait or parents with sickle cell disease. You can not catch it. You are born with the sickle cell hemoglobin and it is present for life. If you inherit only one sickle gene, you have sickle cell trait. If you inherit two sickle cell genes you have sickle cell disease. Is Sickle Cell only in African Americans?
