Heart and Cardiovascular System
Abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). They are caused by problems with the electrical system that regulates the steady, rhythmic beat of the heart. The heartbeat may be too slow, too fast and/or chaotic. Some arrhythmias are dangerous and cause sudden cardiac death, while others may be bothersome but not life threatening. Diseases of the blood vessels (circulatory, or plumbing system problems). An example is coronary artery disease, the major cause of heart attacks. Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy) and other problems that affect the heart muscle or valves.

84. Turn Your Back On Musculoskeletal Disorders!
Turn your back on musculoskeletal disorders was the theme for the European Weekfor Safety and Health at Work run by the 15 European Union Member States
http://osha.eu.int/ew2000/
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are one of the most common work related ailments affecting millions of European workers across all employment sectors at a cost of billions of euros to Europe’s employers. However, much of the problem could be prevented or reduced by following existing health and safety regulations and guidance on good practice.
" Turn your back on musculoskeletal disorders " was the theme for the European Week for Safety and Health at Work run by the 15 European Union Member States during October 2000.
The European Week was an information campaign designed to raise awareness and promote activities to make Europe a safe and healthy place to work.

Back Pain
- There is no simple cause for back pain. It is sometimes possible to trace your pain to an accident or to wear and tear that has happened over time. If you have back pain, you are not alone. The National Institutes of Health estimate that seventy to eight- five percent of all people have back pain at some point in their life. What's more, back pain is the most common reason why the average person has to take a day off work, avoid physical activity or exercise, or change their daily routine. Back pain is also one of the most common reasons why someone visits a doctor. Fortunately, many back problems will go away with time and a few simple remedies, without surgery or prescription medications.

http://www.floaters.net/fworld.html
The Floater Web
This web site is dedicated to informing visitors about floaters. First let me introduce myself. I'm a 42 year old, highly myopic (-6.0), female. I had knee surgery in March of 1996 to repair a torn ACL ligament. Immediately after waking up from the surgery I saw a black line segment floating around in my right eye. I waited a few days to see if the black line segment would go away, but it did not. I then looked in some medical books and determined what I had was a floater. I called my optometrist and she referred me to a ophthalmologist who discovered I had a retinal tear in my right eye. I had laser surgery in my right eye in March of 1996 to repair the torn retina. After the surgery I assumed the floater would go away, but it did not. In fact the floater in my right eye has become increasingly more visible to where I see it all the time, in well lit areas as well as dimly lit areas. I also have many faint floaters in my left eye. The dark floaters in both eyes are affecting my day to day activities. Reading is difficult because the floaters cover and blur letters of text and I need to move my eyes constantly to read the words. Looking at white walls is irritating because it appears I'm looking thru smoke and cobwebs. It is also difficult to enjoy bright sunny days. I have also noticed my vision appears glassy and blurry, it is not clear and crisp anymore. My right eye also feels very strained many times. I have visited many doctors about my floaters and I have been told about a vitrectomy operation to remove them but I have also been told that the operation is not without risk and may cause blindness and that it is best to learn to live with them.

There now are several different pathological entities. These are: tendinitis, paratendinitis, tendinosis, partial and complete rupture. Tendinitis is a catch term for inflammation of the tendon itself from a knee injury, and can often co-exist with paratendinitis causing all the symptoms of knee pain, cramps, spasm and aches. The cause of tendinitis usually results from microscopic tears within the tendon and triggering an inflammatory response within the tendon. Common areas susceptible to tendinitis are; achilles, patella, adductor longus, supraspinatus, biceps, tibialis posterior and flexor hallucis longus tendons.

http://www.sas-centre.org/genetic/genpages/lysstodisindex.html
Lysosomal Storage Disorders
The lysosomal storage diseases are a group of about 40 different diseases, each characterised by a specific lysosomal enzyme deficiency in a variety of tissues. They occur in total in about 1 in 5,000 live births and display considerable clinical and biochemical heterogeneity. The majority are inherited as autosomal recessive conditions although two ( Hunter disease and Fabry disease ) are X-linked. The SAS laboratory offers a very comprehensive service for these disorders, and also has a major research interest in them. Lysosomal enzymes are normally involved in the intracellular degradation of macromolecules to low molecular weight compounds. Deficiencies of these enzymes result in the accumulation of undegraded macromolecules within the lysosomes, leading to the subsequent pathological features of the disease. Usually there is a specific enzyme deficiency (eg of hexosaminidase A in Tay-Sachs disease ), but there may be a failure of delivery of enzymes to the lysosomes (eg I-cell disease ), defective transport of a small molecule out of lysosomes (eg

100. Communication Disorders
Communication disorders,
http://www.mtsu.edu/~comm_dis/
Communication Disorders The Communication Disorders concentration offers students an opportunity to learn about human communication; speech, language, and hearing disorders; and intervention with children and adults diagnosed with communication problems. This pre-professional program thoroughly prepares students for graduate level study in the fields of speech-language pathology, audiology, hearing science, deaf education, and rehabilitation counseling. Other students may elect to pursue employment in related health fields, human service positions, and education. All Communication Disorders majors receive a strong foundation in the liberal arts which emphasizes the development of communication skills (reading, writing, speaking), analytical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving. Thus, graduates are well-prepared to enter a variety of professional fields and continue learning both formally and informally. In addition to classroom activities, Communication Disorders majors participate in a number of clinical activities through the Middle Tennessee State University Speech and Hearing Clinic. Students provide therapy to individuals with speech and language disorders; assist with language and hearing evaluations; and conduct speech and hearing screenings in local schools, day care, and Head Start Centers. These activities not only provide majors with experience in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology, but also reflect a strong commitment to public service by the Communication Disorders faculty.
