Come join our email family. Hello there. My name is JessePaul and this is Cerebral Palsy Connection. CPC exists to allow those with CP to communicate with each other. Communication is very important in coping with the disability. All to often those with CP (or any other disability) feel isolated and alone. Communication is just as much a healing method as therapy or medication used by doctors. CPC soul existence is to bridge the gap and tries to help people realize they are not alone in the world in everything that must be dealt with CP.  Living with CP : Want to know a little of what its like living with Cerebral Palsy? This section contains my story and some personal content related to how I deal with my disability. (9) Types of CP : Cerebral Palsy can cover a very large area of research. CPC tries to organize the specifics of CP into several areas to make it easier for you to find the information you are looking for. (6) Email Database : This database is the very heart and sole of CPC. Feel free to add you name to the member list so that you may communicate with parents or those with the disability. (6)

Welcome to our Cyberscrapbook! We created this page to share information with other families of children with disabilities - and more specifically those diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Our son Joshua was born at 30 weeks gestation and later diagnosed with spastic quadraparesis cerebral palsy and PVL - periventricular leukomalacia. We were so fortunate to have many resources online when Josh was first diagnosed and we want to give something back hopefully helping someone else along the way. Josh is now 8 years old (9 in March 2003) and is a wonderful kid. He's in a typical 3rd grade classroom with an aide to help him with the physical things he can't do easily. He uses a power wheelchair but still is a GameCube and Playstation II fanatic! His favorite past time is using his new Apple Powerbook that he got for Christmas! Josh has a sister named MacKenzie who is quite a character. She is in preschool but will be in kindergarten in the fall. She is all girl make that all GROOVY girl. She loves the computer as much as Josh does - and can find her way around to get to her favorite web sites - and she's 4! For parents who may be finding out about a diagnosis of CP, we want to share some information about what types of CP there are, some common treatments of CP and detail some support resources that you might find helpful.

Definition:
Cerebral palsy is a non-progressive disorder of movement and is caused by a malfunctioning of, or damage to, areas of the brain which control motor function. It is characterized by:
  • Early onset; usually from birth to eight years of age Aberrant control of movement and posture No known underlying progressive pathology
Disabilities
Communication

Coordination/Manipulation

Mobility

Since the damage causing cerebral palsy occurs in different areas of the brain and spinal column, the symptoms resulting from the damage are likewise different. In general, the motor problems associated with Cerebral Palsy are lack of control of muscles, not muscle weakness. This lack of control is often expressed by a lack of inhibition of specific central nervous system reflexes. For example, the simplest is the stretch reflex, which results in uncontrolled contraction of muscles and a condition of muscle hyperactivity known as spasticity. Some of the more common functional limitations seen are:
  • Ambulation - individuals with less severe involvement may ambulate independently, but many require the use of braces, crutches, or canes. Those with more severe symptoms move about in manual or powered wheelchairs. Some with severe ataxia and perceptual deficits are unable to ambulate independently.
