This site contains information on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Otherwise, known as chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS). This section at the bottom of the page is to help in indexing the site throughout the internet. This area is blacked out because it's not relevant to the site or the reader. It's only indexing material for the internet. However, I'm talking from my gut and experience's in case anyone is reading this through there edit/view browser.
The illness or disease of CFIDS is often misdiagnosed. Thus, this site was designed by myself to help others diagnosed or have questions regarding the illness of chronic fatigue syndrome. My second objective is to offer personal insights living with chronic fatigue syndrome. In a way, developing this site was therapy for me. As a caregiver, it helps to vent or find some medium as an outlet. My wife was diagnosed with CFIDS in the late 80's. So, you can imagine, it can be very difficult. The site covers in a summary level: what is CFIDS, how is CFIDS diagnosed, what are the symptoms, how is CFIDS treated, who gets CFIDS, how many people have CFIDS and the causes of this illness.
One area which is very important are caregivers. Or, potential caregivers. They must understand CFIDS through education and talking to others who have chronic fatigue syndrome. In order for a relationships or a marriage to survive, you must take an active role and be prepare to fight this illness. You must also offer support to the love one who has this dreaded disease.

Profound fatigue, the hallmark of the disorder, can come on suddenly or gradually and persists or recurs throughout the period of illness. Unlike the short-term disability of say, the flu, CFS symptoms linger for at least six months and often for years. No one knows what causes it.

The Chronic Syndrome Support Association, Inc., is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. It was founded in 1997 in order to educate the general population and health-care professionals who lack current knowledge of the research being done, and potential research that needs to be done, on these serious, yet invisible, Chronic Immunological and Neurological Disorders (CIND) , which include Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS), Gulf War Syndrome (GWS), Multiple Chemical Sensitivities Syndrome (MCS), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME, the term used in most of the world) / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS, the term used in the United States), Chronic Myofascial Pain (CMP), Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) and related illnesses. It is our goal to promote awareness of these illnesses, and in the process we hope to contribute to the growing body of knowledge about them. Learn more about these 'invisible' illnesses in our pamphlet , which can be downloaded in its actual format with Adobe Reader. If you believe you may have one of these illnesses, seek the assistance of a supportive health-care professional who is familiar with CIND and their treatments.

Solving the Unmet Problems of Daily Living and
Housing for People With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Some Preliminary Thoughts
By
Judith Fleet Wisdom, M.A. (2)
Most of the literature on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) has focused on etiology, treatment, and cure. But in light of the serious disability that many of us experience, more emphasis must be placed on developing remedies to sustain us while ill and prevent further deterioration until more effective medical help emerges. Individual coping strategies and local support groups are fine as far as they go. However, by their nature they can't address some of the essential needs many of us haveespecially those who are most disabled, impoverished, and/or living alone.
THE PROBLEM AND ITS CONSEQUENCES
I believe there are three main components to our daily living difficulties. They are not mutually exclusive, sometimes interact, and have health consequences: 1. Limited ability to perform certain tasks of everyday living: At different stages of the illness there can be difficulty walking, carrying packages, or exerting much muscular effort ("elbow grease"). Food shopping and household tasks become difficult-to- impossible. Some of us lack the stamina to drive, further limiting our ability to maintain our household and take care of personal needs. Lamps and vacuum cleaners break and require repair. Some essential items can't be purchased through catalogues or purchased sight unseen. Also, there's banking? You can deposit checks through the mail but you can't get cash that way.

It's a difficult problem to detect and often times patients are told "it's all in their mind," but a new study at the University of Miami is helping some people regain strength and control of their lives. Sarah Matteos suffered for years before she learned she has chronic fatigue syndrome. "I've had this for around 5 years," she said, "But three of them have been very severe where I had to quit my job … basically I'm dizzy all the time. I feel faint all the time extreme fatigue, nausea sometimes vomiting cognitive dysfunction sometimes lack of concentration." Looking for relief, Matteos decided to take part in a study conducted by the University of Miami and funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

The findings, reported in the September issue of The Journal of Pediatrics , contradict widely shared clinical observations that people with CFS have normal physical examinations. CFS is an often disabling constellation of
fatigue- and pain-related symptoms that can interfere with daily life and cause long absences from school. "This study suggests either that hypermobility itself is an important factor in the development of CFS, or it is associated with another factor that predisposes a person to CFS," says lead researcher Peter C. Rowe,
M.D., professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. Rowe cautions that joint hypermobility alone is not a direct cause of CFS. "We know that about 20 percent of healthy adolescents have joint hypermobility, but clearly most do not go on to develop CFS, so simply

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is not tiredness or extreme tiredness, but a severe flu-like illness that is usually precipitated by a virus, commonly glandular fever or Ross River fever in Queensland. Symptoms patients may suffer include headaches, memory and concentration problems, sore throat, muscle and joint pain, irritable bowel, disturbed sleep, exhaustion after minor effort, food allergies/sensitivities and sensitivity to bright light and noise. CFS is also known as Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (mainly in the USA) and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (mainly in the UK).
Fibromylagia Syndrome (FMS) patients suffer very similar symptoms but pain is much more prominent. Patients are diagnosed by the presence of 11 or more tender points (out of a possible 18).
Both illnesses may be severely disabling, with some patients being largely bed bound. While many studies report higher levels of certain physical abnormalities in CFS/FM patients than in the healthy population, there currently isn't a validated diagnostic test. Diagnosis is made on the basis of symptom presentation.

LINKED TO IMPAIRED STRESS RESPONSE
By Ann Quigley, Contributing Writer
Health Behavior News Service Subtle alterations of a hormonal stress response system called the HPA axis may play a role in chronic fatigue syndrome, according to a study in the November/December issue of Psychosomatic Medicine A smoothly functioning hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal, or HPA, axis helps the body remain stable under physiological and psychological stress through the actions of three hormones. First, the brain portion called the hypothalamus secretes a hormone that stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete a second hormone. This second hormone causes the adrenal glands to create cortisol. Problems can occur at any point in this process and result in a variety of diseases. A research team led by Jens Gaab, Ph.D., of the Center for Psychobiological and Psychosomatic Research at the University of Trier in Trier, Germany; and the Institute of Psychology at the University of Zürich in Switzerland are proposing that chronic fatigue syndrome may be one of them. Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by debilitating fatigue that can include including muscle aches, low-grade fever and sleep disturbances. Its cause is not understood.
