Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is defined as copious watery motions or three or more motions within 24 hours.
Causes of Diarrhoea
Viruses and toxins of micro-organisms cause diarrhoea in the majority of cases. In a small proportion of cases, parasites and other digestive disturbances are responsible for diarrhoea.
Signs and Symptoms of Diarrhoea
  • Frequency of motion is more than usual.
  • Consistency of the stool changes from formed to fluid.
  • There may be associated pain in the abdomen.
  • Stools may be mixed with blood or mucus.
  • There may be vomiting.

Why is Diarrhoea dangerous?
The main danger from diarrhoea results from the loss of body water and salts in the watery stools, which can lead to shock and a number of electrolyte abnormalities and eventually death.
Management of Diarrhoea
Principle: Replace the water and electrolytes lost in the stools. Oral Rehydration Powder packets (WHO Formulation) are available in the market with various brand names and may be used as per the instructions mentioned on the packets. Small frequent feeds of reconstituted oral rehydration solution are advisable. If Commercial Oral Rehydration solutions are not available, then salt-sugar solution can be prepared at home and used instead. Mix 8 teaspoonful of sugar (40 gms) and ¾ teaspoonful of common salt (3.5 gms) in a litre of boiled water and after cooling use as Oral Rehydration solution. If this is not available then coconut water, buttermilk or even plain water may be used until the physician's help is sought.

http://www.aaessentials.com/advice/diarrhoea.html
Diarrhoea Diarrhoea describes uncontrollable bowel movements that produce loose, watery stools. These bowel movements tend to be very frequent, although they occur randomly, and stomach ache and vomiting often accompany them. Although diarrhoea is a common problem which often gets better by itself, sufferers should be careful they do not dehydrate, as large amounts of water can be lost during a bout of diarrhoea. The very young and the elderly are most vulnerable to dehydration. Viral and bacterial infections are the most common causes of diarrhoea. Food contamination, due to undercooked or poorly stored food is a major culprit in introducing these germs into the gut. Water, if it has not been filtered or treated, can also carry germs that cause diarrhoea. Other causes of diarrhoea include stress, spicy foods, too much alcohol and certain prescribed medicines such as antibiotics. Extremely loose and watery stool, passed at frequent intervals throughout the day or night. Bowel movement may well be uncontrollable. Stomach pain, nausea and vomiting may also accompany diarrhoea. Headache and tiredness may also be experienced if there is dehydration. If there is an infection, you may also have a fever.

RASPBERRY CORDIAL
ANTIDOTE TO GASTRO By Rada Rouse
Saturday, March 24, 2001 Raspberry fruit juice cordial can kill the virulent bacteria that causes outbreaks of gastroenteritis, research shows. Experiments with pure raspberry juice and commercial cordials at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga have shown that a folk remedy commonly used by livestock owners has scientific validity, Dr Heather Cavanagh said. Dr Cavanagh and colleague Dr Jenny Wilkinson from the school of biomedical sciences have found that a dash of concentrated raspberry juice kills E. Coli, salmonella, mycobacterium and staphylococci among other bugs. "We've looked at raspberry juice and raspberry cordial with at least 25 per cent juice and they both work very well," Dr Cavanagh told AAP. "Raspberry-flavoured cordials do not have the same effect, and when we tried the juice on fungus it just grew better, probably due to the sugars." Dr Cavanagh, who hails from Scotland, was startled to find that Australian cattle and pig farmers routinely use raspberry cordial to prevent gastric outbreaks in their animals, as well as recommending it for people.

Loperamide ), a green/grey capsule, and Diphenoxylate a very small white tablet, are both used for the symptomatic treatment of diarrhoea. 'Symptomatic treatment' means treatment of the diarrhoea only and not of the underlying cause, which may or may not require separate investigation or treatment. Dosage of antidiarrhoeals is dependent on severity of symptoms but involves a set maximum number of tablets per day. Overdose causes constipation and drowsiness. Chemical additives decrease the potential for abuse of antidiarrhoeal medication by causing unpleasant side effects. [Previous Page] [Next Page] [Table of Contents/Search]

Diarrhoea Unpleasant as it may be, diarrhoea provides your body with a way to flush out harmful toxins. This common ailment usually subsides on its own in a day or so, but it can be uncomfortable and inconvenient. Treatment should prevent dehydration and restore bulk to the stools. Symptoms
  • Frequent loose watery stools.
  • Abdominal cramps.
  • Nausea , fever or thirst. See your doctor
  • If diarrhoea persists for more than 48 hours.
  • If fever is higher than 38°C and is accompanied by severe abdominal cramps, dizziness and light-headedness, or no urination.
  • If there is blood in the stool or the stool is black.

Reminder: If you have a medical condition, consult your doctor before taking supplements. How supplements can help
Try drinking agrimony, blackberry leaf or raspberry leaf tea. These contain tannins, chemicals that have a sealing effect on the mucous membranes in the intestine and help the body to retain fluids. The teas also replenish lost fluids, which is important in preventing the dehydration that may result from a prolonged bout of diarrhoea.
If none of the teas provides relief, consider psyllium. Though this soluble fibre is more familiar as a treatment for constipation, it absorbs excess fluid in the intestine and adds bulk to the stool. Probiotics help to restore adequate levels of healthy bacteria to the intestine and are especially important if the diarrhoea is related to antibiotic use. All of these remedies can be substituted for over-the-counter preparations (except acidophilus, which can be used with them but should not be taken at the same time of day).

If you have an animal with diarrhoea there are some important guidelines that you should follow:
  • If you haven't done so - Get your pet examined by your veterinarian.
  • Always give the medications that your veterinarian has prescribed at the correct dose and at the correct times.
  • Contact your veterinary practice if you are concerned that your animal is having a relapse, or if it appears to react abnormally following treatment.
  • Keep your animal on the strict diet that your veterinarian recommends and AVOID feeding high fat foods because fat intake can make the condition much worse. If your pet is a bin scrounger or likely to steal food - stop him/her . Many "snacks" are relatively high in fat - so cut them out !!

If you get diarrhoea Traveler's Diarrhoea requires considerable care to avoid. If you do succumb to diarrhoea, its intensity will depend on how much contaminated food or drink you consumed. If you get the runs' after eating lunch at one place, it's not a good idea to go back there again for dinner. To minimize your risk.
Eat food served steaming hot and cooked to order rather than food left out on trays or in chafing dishes. Among fruits, choose those that have to be peeled (like oranges) rather than those you consume with the skin intact (like grapes). Bread is usually safe. Favor soft drinks like Coke over fresh squeezed fruit juices or locally produced drinks like nam oy (sugar cane juice). Buffets, a great way to try a variety of local foodsand also one of the best ways to contract diarrhoea. Avoid salads, uncooked fresh vegetables , and all shellfish. Microorganisms clinging to people's hands are a major source of contamination . Don't eat anything that has touched your hands or those of anyone else. Drinks with cube ice or tube ice are safe ; drinks made with crushed ice or ice chipped from blocks are not.

http://www.babydirectory.com/doctor/vomit.htm
VOMITING and DIARRHOEA lmost all children will get diarrhoea or vomiting at some stage, especially if taken to foreign countries on holiday. In almost all cases the illness will be brief and self-limiting, however it is important to treat children promptly to prevent them becoming dehydrated. Younger babies are more vulnerable than older children to the effects of diarrhoeal illnesses. In developed countries viral infections are responsible for most cases of acute gastro-enteritis in children under five years old. Children will often vomit before diarrhoea starts, and diarrhoea will often be watery. It may be difficult to distinguish from urine in a nappy. Dehydration initially causes children to become fretful, then lethargic, with sunken eyes and lax dry skin. Severe dehydration causes young children to become prostrate with deeply sunken eyes and cold mottled skin. Mild dehydration can be treated at home. Children should be given oral rehydration fluids, which can be bought at chemists. These are powders containing salts and sugar and which are dissolved in water. They allow prompt reversal of dehydration, and are more effective than water alone. No food should be given for 24 hours, after which time the normal diet can be gradually restarted. Moderate to severe dehydration requires hospitalisation for intravenous fluid therapy In tropical countries, adding salt to coca cola also acts as an efficient oral rehydration solution since it is sterile and contains sugar and salt.

The mouth-watering festive delights and tantalising smells of the summer barbecue can prove too much of a temptation to give in. But over-indulgence in the 'good way" of life sometimes carries a cost.
"Holiday overeating and food poisoning from barbecues are two common causes of vomiting and diarrhoea during summer," say Self Care Pharmacists.
Summer's warmer weather can make food go off much quicker than during the colder months and people may eat food that is infected with bacteria, thus causing the vomiting and diarrhoea.
"Vomiting and diarrhoea can quickly lead to dehydration, particularly with children and older people," caution Self Care Pharmacists. Dehydration drains the body of fluids and important electrolytes which can lead to serious problems if not treated quickly.
"Children under 12 months of age with diarrhoea or vomiting, should see a doctor immediately. They can become dehydrated very quickly because their bodies have little water to start with," advise pharmacists.

Caring for Pets with Acute Diarrhoea
The two most common signs associated with disturbances of the gastrointestinal tract are vomiting and diarrhoea. This article explains how the digestive tract works and how to look after your pet with an acute intestinal upset. Acute diseases (rapid onset, short duration) if managed correctly can reduce the risk of a more chronic (long duration) problem occurring. THE DIGESTIVE TRACT For pets to obtain the nourishment they need for their daily life, food must be broken down into smaller nutrients that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. The process of breaking down food particles is called digestion. This process begins in the stomach, and continues in the intestines where the nutrients are absorbed. Little of the digestive process occurs in the large intestine. Here, water is re-absorbed into the bloodstream. This is important not only in the production of firm stools, but in maintaining the body's water balance. Inflammation of the intestinal tract can be caused by a variety of things, including infections (bacteria, viruses), eating spoiled food or rubbish, food allergies and some medications. Sudden changes or additions to the diet, such as feeding table scraps or milk, can also cause diarrhoea in some animals. Other diseases, such as kidney disease and liver disease can also result in the development of gastroenteritis.

The process of breaking down food particles is called digestion. This process begins in the stomach, and continues in the intestines where the nutrients are absorbed. The liver and pancreas produce substances that aid these processes. Little of the digestive process occurs in the large intestine. Here, water is re-absorbed into the bloodstream. This is important not only in the production of firm stools, but in maintaining the body's water balance. CANINE EXOCRINE PANCREATIC INSUFFICIENCY (EPI) The pancreas is a V-shaped gland which lies in close proximity to the stomach. The pancreas is important for the production of the hormone insulin (endocrine function) and pancreatic juice (exocrine function). Pancreatic juice contains enzymes which are important for the digestion of proteins and carbohydrates, but predominantly enzymes which digest fats - called lipases. Some pets (mainly dogs, and occasionally cats) are only able to produce small amounts of pancreatic juice and suffer from a reduced ability to digest nutrients (especially fats).
