New Hand-assisted Laparoscopic Technique for Kidney Cancer Surgery
Medical College of Wisconsin urologists at Froedtert Hospital and the VA Medical Center Milwaukee are the first in Southeastern Wisconsin to use a new technique for kidney removal in cancer patients with small primary kidney tumors. The new technique, hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy, offers the advantages of two surgical techniques: the smaller incisions and shorter recovery times of laparoscopic surgery, and the option of removing a completely intact kidney afforded by conventional surgery, according to Frank P. Begun, MD , Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Urology at the Medical College. "It is also an ideal approach for elderly patients, who may be too frail for conventional surgery, which could be very debilitating," he said.

WHAT ARE THE KIDNEYS?
The kidneys are part of the urinary tract. They are a pair of organs found just above the waist on each side of the spine.
The kidneys remove waste products from the blood and produce urine. As blood flows through the kidneys, they filter waste products, chemicals, and unneeded water from the blood. Urine collects in the middle of each kidney, an area called the renal pelvis. Urine then drains from the kidney through a long tube, the ureter, to the bladder, where it is stored.
The kidneys also make substances that help control blood pressure and regulate the formation of red blood cells. BACK TO THE TOP WHAT IS CANCER?

Stemming kidney cancer
Stem cell transplants are problematic but they can halt the progress of certain cancers, Helen Gavaghan reports.
25 September 2000 HELEN GAVAGHAN Stem cells from a brother or sister transplanted to a sufferer of advanced kidney cancer can reverse, sometimes completely, the growth of tumours that have spread around the body, new research shows. The work is in its earliest stages, but in a trial of 19 patients, more than half benefited. Conventional treatment rarely has a success rate above 20 per cent. "This is the first time we have seen substantial and sustained benefit from this type of treatment," says John Barrett from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, Maryland where the work was carried out. The treatment first suppresses the patient's own immune system with drugs so that compatible sibling stem cells can be transfused. Gradually, the donor cells replace the patient's immune system and stem cells; the transplanted immune system then attacks and kills the tumour cells. All tumours were eliminated in three people given the treatment; tumours in another seven patients shrank by at least 50 per cent. The trial included only people who had not responded to existing therapies. The results are published in

If you or a friend or relative have been diagnosed with cancer, you will find much more detailed information on our patient information site, CancerHelp UK Summary Kidney cancer usually affects people over the age of 50. Men are more likely to develop the disease than women, and smokers are more likely to develop it than non-smokers. It is the eighth most common cancer in men, and the fourteenth most common in women in the UK. Each year, there are over 3,600 new cases of kidney cancer in men, and over 2,200 cases in women. The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs on either side of the spine just above the waist. Their main function is to filter blood and rid the body of excess water, salt and waste products. About four in five cases of kidney cancer affect the tubes inside the kidney that carry out this filtering. A rare form of kidney cancer is Wilms tumour, which occurs in childhood. If kidney cancer is not treated, cancer cells can break away from the original site and spread to other parts of the body. Risk factors

Most cancers are named after the part of the body where the cancer first begins. Kidney cancer begins in the kidneys. It may also be referred to as renal cancer renal is the Latin word for kidney. The most common type of kidney cancer is called renal cell cancer, which accounts for about 85 percent of all kidney tumors. The information contained on this page refers to renal cell cancer. Causes and Symptoms The exact cause of renal cell cancer is unknown. However, there are certain risk factors that are linked to it. Who develops kidney cancer? What are the risk factors for developing kidney cancer? There have not been any widely accepted risk factors for developing kidney or "renal" cancer nor is there a standard screening method to help identify individuals with kidney cancer. What are the symptoms of kidney cancer? Kidney cancer is most successfully treated if it is found early. The following symptoms should be reported to your doctor:
  • Blood in your urine
  • Pain in your side that does not go away
  • A lump in your abdomen
Unfortunately, once a patient has symptoms, the kidney cancer has often already escaped to other parts of the body. How is kidney cancer treated?

International Kidney Cancer Symposium
The objectives of the Second International Kidney Cancer Symposium are to evaluate the growing body of knowledge regarding clinical, immunologic, and biologic characteristics of renal cell carcinoma. Current clinical trials will be appraised to better define the direction of research into treatments for metastatic renal cell carcinoma. A variety of surgical options will be compared. The direction of allogenic transplants and vaccine therapy for kidney cancer will be evaluated.
Bringing together key individuals and representatives from leading laboratories and centers working with renal cell carcinoma, the Second International Kidney Cancer Symposium seeks to provide a forum for the exchange of information and views that will frame directions for future research. This meeting is directed to physicians and scientists involved in clinical and research aspects of renal cell carcinoma. Index

Kidney Cancer More info on this condition Introduction The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located on either side of the spine at the small of the back. Adult-sized kidneys are about 5 inches long and 3 inches wide. People need at least one functioning kidney to live. Inside each kidney are tiny tubules that filter and clean the blood, removing waste products such as water, mineral salts and toxins. The collected waste, or urine, is sent to the bladder for excretion. Each year, more than 30,000 people are diagnosed with kidney cancer (also called renal cell carcinoma or renal adenocarcinoma). Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a cancer of the lining of the kidney's tubules, and accounts for 85 percent of kidney cancers. The rest are transitional cell cancers, which start in a part of the kidney called the renal pelvis. Kidney cancer is a relatively rare form of cancer. There are more than 100,000 kidney cancer survivors in the United States.
