Gluten-sensitive enteropathy, also commonly known as celiac disease, celiac sprue, nontropical sprue, or sprue, is a disease of the small intestine. It occurs when the intestinal lining becomes damaged when certain proteins containing gliadin (a protein fraction of gluten) are eaten. The damaged lining is unable to absorb and transport many nutrients, which can lead to malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies. Symptoms may include gas, bloating, diarrhea, anemia, fatigue and, in children, failure to thrive. What is dermatitis herpetiformis? Dermatitis herpetiformis is another form of gluten-sensitivity in which the skin is the major organ of involvement. The major symptom of this condition is an extensive skin rash. How is gluten-sensitivity diagnosed? Although there may be many clinical signs and laboratory tests indicating malabsorption, the only means of diagnosing gluten-sensitive enteropathy is by small intestine biopsy and response to a gluten-free diet.
