Short bowel syndrome
Causes and Risks:
The lack of adequate surface to absorb nutrients from food occurs when specialized areas of the bowel are removed. When one-half of the bowel or more is removed during surgery, the risk of small bowel syndrome is great. Risk factors include diseases of the small intestine that may require surgical intervention such as regional enteritis or Crohn's disease Necrotizing enterocolitis is a common cause of this syndrome in infants.
Prevention:
this may be an unavoidable complication of extensive bowel surgery.
Symptoms:

Signs and Tests: Treatment: The treatment is for the relief of symptoms. A high-calorie and low-residue diet supplying essential vitamins and minerals is necessary.

Welcome to Kaya Estlyn Shepherd-Poppick's Home Page!
Hi!!! My name is Kaya Estlyn. I was born on November 9th, 1998, and I'm as cute as a button. I live in Missoula, Montana with my Mom, (Elliot), and my Dad, (Jesse). I am a very sweet and good-natured little girl, and I love to smile and talk to people. My current hobbies are: playing with HaHa and B, walking to the park, running in the yard, watching Blues Clues, and telling stories.
My life is great now, but had a rough first year. I was born without much small intestine, and had to spend months and months in the hospital. I've had twelve surgeries (some big, some little), and I've been sick a lot. When the doctors told us that I needed to have a transplant, my parents took me to different hospitals and put me on several organ donor lists, but it took a long time to get my new liver and intestine. Thank goodness my new organs finally came October 20th, 1999! Now I'm feeling much better.
My life is great since my transplant...my parents and I would like to thank everyone who has given us support and love over the last year: family, friends, doctors, and nurses - We could not have done it with out you!

SMALL BOWEL PATIENT SELECTION CRITERIA Background: Indications: Small bowel transplantation is indicated in patients with irreversible intestinal failure and permanent dependence on total parenteral nutrition. Conditions potentially leading to irreversible intestinal failure are listed in, but not limited to, those indications in the following chart. Small bowel transplant alone is presently the preferred procedure in patients where irreversible intestinal failure and permanent dependence on parenteral nutrition is identified prior to the development of progressive cholestasis secondary to TPN and subsequent liver function deterioration. Every possible effort should be made to identify patients when possible during this clinical phase. In patients where liver function is felt to be irreparably damaged, combined small bowel/liver transplant may be indicated. The increased complexity of the combined small bowel/liver transplant procedure makes it a less acceptable risk option for patients. Patients with liver failure due to diseases that are Consortium-approved, specific indications for liver transplantation alone, and who also have short bowel syndrome, may also be considered on an individual basis for combined small bowel/liver transplantation. Contraindications to isolated small bowel and combined small bowel/liver transplantation are listed below. All patients considered for small bowel transplant procedures will be considered and approved through the existing Consortium mechanism by all Consortium-approved centers.

Short bowel syndrome is a group of problems affecting people who have had half or more of their small intestine removed. The most common reason for removing part of the small intestine is to treat Crohn's disease. Diarrhea is the main symptom of short bowel syndrome. Other symptoms include cramping, bloating, and heartburn. Many people with short bowel syndrome are malnourished because their remaining small intestine is unable to absorb enough water, vitamins, and other nutrients from food. They may also become dehydrated, which can be life threatening. Problems associated with dehydration and malnutrition include weakness, fatigue, depression, weight loss, bacterial infections, and food sensitivities. Short bowel syndrome is treated through changes in diet, intravenous feeding, vitamin and mineral supplements, and medicine to relieve symptoms. Reviewed: 11-11-00 by Ben E. Kitchens M.D.

Aetna does not Background Intestinal rehabilitation is the process of intestinal adaptation through which the remaining small intestine gradually increases its absorptive capacity. CPB #605 - Intestinal Transplantation for coverage of intestinal transplantation for patients who have failed TPN). Potential long-term survival without parenteral nutrition heavily depends on stimulation of the process of intestinal adaptation. Substances such as growth hormone, glutamine, and fiber exert bowel-specific trophic effects and have been used to either directly or indirectly influence nutrient absorption. Such therapy supposedly enhances growth of villi in the intestine and prolongs the time it takes for food to pass through the intestine, thereby promoting absorption of nutrients and fluids across the remaining bowel. Although early studies appeared to show that this type of intestinal rehabilitation was beneficial, recent randomized controlled trials reported that growth hormone, glutamine, and low-fat/high-carbohydrate diet are ineffective in enhancing the gastrointestinal function of patients with short-gut syndrome.

Who We Are
Hi and welcome to The No Guts Country Club. My name is Jim, just so you will know I am a real person. Every thing I say is from my experience in the last eleven years with Short Bowel Syndrome, in fact I have what is called Extreme Short Bowel Syndrome. I have " about " 12 inches of active small intestine and "about" 10 inches of small intestine that was really not useable to ingest vitamins, but was viable enough to use as a conduit and reconnect. This give the Doctors enough that I could be re-connected and not have an ostomy. I have about 22" total out of a possible 22 FT or so that is normal
My small Intestine is made up of short pieces, mainly some of the "loops", sewn together, and according to the Doctors the longest single piece of intestine is "
