‘Quasi-phase-matching: the key to engineerable nonlinear optical materials’
    Abstract:
By structuring a nonlinear optical material so that its nonlinearity is spatially modulated, on a wavelength scale, it becomes possible to phase-match the interaction between waves of arbitrary frequencies. This opens up many new possibilities, allowing access to much higher nonlinearities, and allowing access to materials which previously could not provide phase-matching. With photolithographic patterning techniques used to determine the spatial modulation of nonlinearity, complex aperiodic structures can be created, so that novel processes, not available in bulk nonlinear materials, now become possible. This talk will review progress in the area of these quasi-phase-matched materials, with illustrations based on the work at Southampton on periodically-poled lithium niobate. Manipulation and Measurement of Atomic Particls with Light
The goal of the projects is to explore the basic physics and technology, which will be applicable to novel devices indispensible to new way of communications in next decades. In order to achieve this goal, we are studying new ways of manipulating atomic particles with light. The detail of the projects is as follows; ¡@Generation of continuous-wave deep UV coherent radiation
[Sum-frequency-mixing apparatus] We are developing efficient and stable sum-frequency mixing appatatuses, with which one can generate continuous-wave UV coherent radiation, which is usually difficult to generate with lasers. The all-solid-state version of these will be applicable to various experiments, for example, high-resolution spectroscopy, laser cooling and laser manipulation. [detail] ¡@Ultra high-resolution spectroscopy on trapped ions We are doing studies on trapping, laser-cooling, high-resolution spectroscopy of ions in a systematic way. This will contribute to ion-trap time and frequency standards. It is expected that the ion-trap technolgy will exceed the current limit of the freqneucy stability.

Laser Physics
The physics department has a broad program in Laser Physics including investigation of semiconductor lasers for communication and spectroscopy, high power diode lasers, ultrashort optical pulses, new optical materials and nonlinear optical processes. The program is closely interwoven with other departmental research, particularly the AMO Physics program described in an earlier section of this brochure.

Semiconductor Lasers
A coordinated theoretical and experimental investigation of semiconductor lasers for optical communication, mid-infrared semiconductor lasers for spectroscopy, and high-power semiconductor lasers for fiber amplifiers is being carried out. Current research on semiconductor lasers for communication includes high-speed surface emitting laser research, 100 Gb/s pulse generation using mode-locking and optical multiplexing, investigation of integrated laser modulator structures and investigation of wavelength conversion using optical nonlinearities in semiconductor amplifiers. The high-speed transmission research is in collaboration with Bell Laboratories. The research on mid-infrared lasers is aimed at spectroscopy for the detection of certain molecules. Current research is focused on the calculation of band structure parameters, and radiative and Auger recombination rates in semiconductor materials with the aim of understanding the high-temperature characteristics of these lasers. Very sensitive optoacoustic spectroscopic methods are under development in collaboration with Lincoln Labs.

Careers in Defence Consultations Contacts ... Laser Physics
LASER PHYSICS To understand more fully those processes that occur during a nuclear explosion, fundamental data about the materials involved must be obtained - under comparable temperature and pressures. However, it is difficult to replicate the extreme temperatures and pressures that occur during a nuclear explosion by alternate means. The method of choice at AWE is to use ultra-high power lasers. If high-power laser beams are focused into a small volume (less than 1mm3) for a very short time period (about 1 nanosecond or 1 thousand millionth of a second) it is possible to generate temperatures above 1 million oC. This provides conditions that approach those at the centre of a nuclear explosion and is sufficient to perform useful experiments on material properties. One of the main aims of the laser physics programme is to investigate 'radiative opacity', a measure of how much materials impede the flow of radiation. A simple example is the ‘flow’ of visible light (which is a form of radiation) through different materials. It is obvious through experience that some materials (like glass) impede the transmission of light less than others do (like wood). AWE is primarily interested in high-energy radiation and the opacity of materials in the plasma phase, where free electrons and positively charged ions co-exist. Radiative opacity varies with the nature, temperature and density of a material. Over the past 15 years, the 1-terawatt (1 million million watts) HELEN laser at AWE has made it possible to collect meaningful data on radiative opacities. However, even this powerful laser cannot generate the temperatures and pressures experienced within a nuclear warhead. Currently, opacity values for warhead conditions are generated using computer models. In order to validate predicted opacity values, the UK is pursuing a two-pronged approach:

Research in the department involves some of the most rapidly developing areas of physical science and ranges from the fundamental physics of quantum systems to interdisciplinary application of lasers. The themes of quantum information processing, ultra-cold atom physics, high-intensity laser interactions and nonlinear optics form interleaving connections between research groups. The department has pioneered developments in these fields and has well-established links with other world-leading academic research centres and with industry. In the Centre for Quantum Computation the dramatic potential of quantum systems for information processing is explored theoretically and experimentally. The Centre conducts research into all aspects of quantum information processing, and into the implications of the quantum theory of computation for physics itself. The field of quantum cryptography was pioneered in the group and current theoretical research aims to develop new modes of computation based on quantum entanglement and interference. Theoretical ideas for quantum error correction, crucial for the practical implementation of quantum computing, are developed and tested experimentally within the Centre. Approaches to practical quantum computing are being investigated using ion traps, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and solid state nanostructures.

Melvin Lax Receives Laser Physics Award MURRAY HILL, N.J. (Jan. 21, 1999) - Physicist Melvin Lax has been awarded the Willis E. Lamb Medal for Laser Physics, in recognition of pioneering research he conducted at Bell Labs in the 1960s. Also receiving the award earlier this month, at the 29th Winter Colloquium on the Physics of Quantum Electronics in Snowbird, Utah, were Lorenzo Narducci and Herbert Walther. Melvin Lax (This photograph is also available at high-resolution A distinguished professor of physics at the City College of New York since 1971, Lax has been affiliated with Bell Labs for 44 years. He worked at Bell Labs from 1955 to 1972 and remains a consultant. Lorenzo Narducci is Davis Professor of Physics at Drexel University in Philadelphia; Herbert Walther is Director of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Munich, Germany. Less than five years after the invention of the laser, Lax began publishing a series of theoretical papers that proved fundamental to the scientific understanding of this new class of device. Narducci and Walther have applied Lax's theoretical work in recent years. "Mel Lax is one of the fathers of quantum optics," said Dick Slusher, head of Optical Physics Research, the Bell Labs department with which Lax is currently associated. "When I was starting out in this field, his work was required reading, as part of a very small set of seminal papers describing how lasers worked."

PHASERS
Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT)
Scully (1992) referred to a medium in which EIT is established as phaseonium ; and he called a laser based on phaseonium a Phaseonium Laser , or phaser for short. Essentially it breaks the symmetry between absorption and stimulated emission by using a coherent laser whose frequency closely matches the transition between the upper level and some other auxiliary level, the lasing medium can be coherently prepared in such a way that absorption between the lower and upper levels is reduced or eliminated. The theoretical mechanism for this process is quantum mechanical interference between two different paths leading to the excited state. The total transition probability of going from the lower level to the upper level is the square of the sum of the probability amplitudes of two separate paths :
  • Virtual transition from the lower level trough the auxiliary level before reaching the upper level
  • Direct transitions to the upper level Since we don't care through which path the quantum system follows we must sum the probability amplitudes for these two separate processes, and then take the square of this resulting amplitude to determine the total probability to make a transition from the lower level to the upper level. The trick here is to choose the atom-laser quantum system in such a way that the separate amplitudes to reach the upper state have opposite phase and thus sum to zero; which implies that the square of this value which is equivalent to the total probability to make a transition from the lower level to the upper level is also zero. Ironically, by creating more paths to state 2, we can reduce the number of atoms that actually get there.

Professor Joseph Ganem's research program is in the area of laser physics. His recent work, in collaboration with the Laser Physics Branch of the U. S. Naval Research Laboratory, is directed towards developing new kinds of mid-infrared (3 - 10 micron) lasers. Dr. Ganem is co-inventor of the praseodymium lanathnum trichloride laser. Built at the Naval Research Lab, this is the longest wavelength, rare-earth based solid state laser ever operated. Efficient room temperature operation at wavelengths as long as 7.3 microns has been achieved. The enabling principle of a mid-infrared solid-state laser is the use of a crystalline host for the rare earth ions that has very low phonon energies. Dr. GanemÕs Laboratory at Loyola, is devoted to the growth, fabrication and spectroscopy of rare-earth doped, low-phonon energy crystals. The crystal growing lab was built with funding from Loyola College and a grant from Research Corporation.
