Our Sponsors: The High-Tc Superconductivity Information Center and High-Tc Update newsletter were started in April 1987 as a short-term solution for a crisis situation: the need to communicate frequentalmost dailybreakthroughs in high-Tc superconductivity. Over the years, it has become a successful model for how research results can be very effectively communicated. For recent superconductivity-related research papers, coming events, job openings, etc., see menu choices below.

USING THE MOON AS A COSMIC RAY DETECTOR. Some of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray neutrinos striking the Moon's soil are expected to set up shock waves of Cerenkov radiation, the light given off by particles (in this case charged particles spawned by neutrinos) traveling faster than light itself in that medium (see schematic drawing at http://www.aip.org/mgr/png http://www.aip.org/physnews/select http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~moonemp/public/lunacee2/index.ht ml) By the way, in this week's issue of Nature, members of the AMANDA collaboration report the observation of cosmic-ray neutrinos, also via the emission of Cerenkov radiation, but in this case the detectors are buried in Antarctic ice (Andres et al., Nature, 22 March 2001.) astronomy

This is an experimental setup which illustrates the pump/probe principle. It utilizes a pulsed laser who's beam is split into two separate paths. As the pathlength of one beam (in this case the probe beam) is lengthened via an optical delay line the probe can sample the surface at different times relative to the pump beam. A profile over time can then be produced from the resultant acquired data.

Feature: January 2002 Basic research into the electrical and thermal properties of metallic, magnetic and organic materials is leading to the discovery of novel superconductors.
Research into superconductivity is enjoying a renaissance. Over the past two years physicists have discovered a wide variety of materials - including iron, single crystals of carbon-60 and even DNA - that lose their electrical resistance at low temperatures. Meanwhile, power cables made from ribbons of high-temperature superconductors have been installed in Detroit and there are similar plans for Los Angeles. T c , climbed above the temperature of liquid nitrogen (77 K), opening up the possibility of new applications. Currently the highest known transition temperature is 130 K for a mercury-based cuprate, yet there is still no agreed theory to explain superconductivity in these materials (see Explaining high- T c superconductors Physics World December 1999 p55).

Welcome to the home page of the Oxide Research programme in the School of physics and astronomy at Birmingham University, United Kingdom. This describes a collaboration of experimental and theoretical physicists and material scientists concerned with the physics of strongly correlated electrons in oxide materials. Materials of interest to us include the high temperature cuprate superconductors, non-Fermi liquid physics near quantum critical points, unconventional superconductivity in the ruthanates and heavy fermion behaviour in lithium vanadate. The work is coordinated by Dr Andy Mackenzie and Dr Andy Schofield.
