Cardano, Girolamo (150 1576) Cardano was encouraged to study both the classics and mathematics by his father, who was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci. Cardano began his university studies in 1520 at Pavia and completed them at Padua in 1526 with a degree in medicine. In 1534, Cardano became a doctor and teacher of mathematics in Milan. Within a few years Cardano became the city's most famous physician. In 1539, while awaiting the publication of Practica arithmetica , his first book on mathematics, Cardano learned that Tartaglia knew the procedure for solving cubic equations. Cardano succeeded in obtaining this information from Tartaglia by promising not to reveal it. He kept the promise for six years, but then published in 1545 the method in his Artis magnae sive de regulis algebraicis liber unus , commonly called Cardano's Ars magna Cardano wrote more than 200 works on medicine, mathematics, physics, philosophy, religion, and music, although his fame today rests solely on his contributions to mathematics. In the Practica arithmetic a , which is devoted to numerical calculation, Cardano revealed his tremendous mathematical ability in solving many complex algebraic problems.

Cardano, Girolamo
Girolamo Cardano was born on September 24, 1501 in the city of Pavia, in what is now Italy. Without a doubt, he is one of the most colorful characters in the early history of probability. Cardano's early training in mathematics probably came from his father, who was a lawyer by trade, but evidently an accomplished mathematician as well. Later, Cadano was educated at the universities of Pavia and Padua. He received a doctoral degree in medicine in 1525. Cardano was a man of many interests and professions, including: law, medicine, astrology, and mathematics. Cardano published The Practice of Arithmetic and Simple Mensuration in 1537. The mathematical work that he is best known for, Ars Magna (The Great Art) was published in 1545. This book contains a variety of methods for solving polynomial equations, and anticipates the discovery of complex numbers. Additionally, Cardano wrote two encyclopedias of natural science. He achieved extraordinary fame as a physician, and indeed was considered one of the foremost scientists in Europe. However, Cardano was also an avid and at times compulsive gambler, who squandered a significant part of his life and fortune on games of chance. On the positive side, his interest in gambling led to his mathematical study of probability. Cardano's book

CARDANO, Girolamo De Rerum Varietate libri XVII. Basle, Heinrich Petri, 1557 Folio (313 x 200 mm), pp [xii] 707 [33], with woodcut portrait of author on title, volvelle plate for leaf O1 tipped in, and numerous woodcut diagrams and illustrations in text; a few gatherings with some light browning, generally a very attractive copy in eighteenth-century quarter vellum and speckled boards, the Honeyman copy with booklabel. £8500
First edition of Cardano's second great encyclopaedia of natural science, the sequel and companion to his De subtilitate (1550). 'The two works, written in an elliptical and often obscure Latin, contain a little of everything: from cosmology to the construction of machines; from the usefulness of natural sciences to the evil influence of demons; from the laws of mechanics to cryptology. It is a mine of facts, both real and imaginary; of notes on the states of the sciences; of superstition, technology, alchemy, and various branches of the occult. The similarities between the scientific opinions expressed by Cardano in these two works and those of Leonardo da Vinci, at that time unpublished, has led some historians... to suppose that Cardano has used Leonardo's manuscript notes; others insist that the similarity is entirely coincidental. Be that as it may, Cardano must always be credited with having introduced new ideas that inspired new investigations' (DSB).
'The work forms a sequel to De Subtilitate, and, together with it, contains the author's notions on physics and metaphysics. Of special chemical interest is Book X (p. 375-410), comprising one chapter on fire... a chapter on distillation with woodcuts of apparatus, and a chapter on chemistry. It finishes by a chapter on glass' (Duveen).

CARDANO, Girolamo [colophon:] Milan, Giovanni Antonio da Castiglione for Bernardinus Caluscus, 1539 8vo (157 x 98 mm), ff [304], with woodcut portrait of Cardano on title, printer's device on verso of last leaf, and numerous woodcut initials and diagrams in text; small tear to corner of title and a2 expertly repaired, a fine copy in contemporary English calf, blindstamped cartouche on covers, a little wear to head and tail of spine and two corners, old shelfmark ('A 8vo Card') on fore-edge. £8000
First edition of Cardano's first published work on mathematics (and his second published work in all). 'A theoretical work for advanced students and for the use of scholars. One of the most influential arithmetics produced in Italy' (Stillwell).
'Cardano's fame rests on his contributions to mathematics. As early as the Practica arithmeticae, which is devoted to numerical calculation, he revealed uncommon mathematical ability in the exposition of many original methods of mnemonic calculation and in the confidence with which he transformed algebraic expressions and equations... His mastery of calculation also enabled him to solve equations above the second degree, which contemporary algebra was unable to do. For example, taking the equation that in modern notation is written 6x3 - 4x2 = 34x + 24, he added 6x3 + 20x2 to each member and obtained, after other transformations, 4x2 (3x + 4) = (2x2 + 4x + 6)(3x + 4), divided both members by 3x + 4, and from the resulting second-degree equation obtained the solution x = 3' (DSB).

http://ak.essortment.com/jeromegirolamo_nun.htm
Who is Girolamo Cardano?
Girolamo Cardano is by far one of the most interesting persons to have lived in the last millenium. He was terribly abused as a child. He was the result of an abortion attempt that failed. From these humble and sad beginnings grew a formidable scholar and world-renowned surgeon, just to name a few of his many specialties. His father was an attorney who was known to associate with top scientists and artists of the day. He was sought by royalty for his expertise. Despite his success, family disgrace quickly destroyed what so many years of hard work had achieved. Like during his sad youth, he left this world much the same way. In the same way that he had spent his childhood- sad and alone. I. Girolamo Cardano, also referred to as Jerome Cardan, and Gerolamo Cardano, was born in Pavia, Italy on September 24, 1501. He died in Rome, Italy on September 21, 1576 by his own hand. bodyOffer(15675) II. After a torturous childhood filled with shame and abuse, Cardano escaped to the University of Pavia, where he received a BA. Later he received a Doctorate at the University of Padua. III. Cardano became a skilled doctor, whose name is often included with other renowned physicians such as Hippocrates, Galen, and many others.
