Rudolf Julius Emanuel Clausius deutscher Physiker Rudolf Clausius wurde am 2. Januar 1822 in Köslin (heute Koszalin, Polen) geboren. Clausius, das sechste unter achtzehn Kindern, studierte von 1840 bis 1844 an der Universität Berlin Physik, Mathematik und Geschichte. Er zählte zu den zehn ersten Mitgliedern der von Magnus privat durchgeführten Kolloqiua, aus denen 1845 die Physikalische Gesellschaft wurde. Ab Herbst 1844 war er als Lehrer am FriedrichWerderschen Gymnasium in Berlin tätig. Er befasste sich mit Fragen der Lichtstreuung in der Atmosphäre, worüber er 1848 promoviert wurde. 1850 wechselte er als Physikdozent an die Artillerie- und Ingenieurschule. Gleichzeitig war er Privatdozent an der Universität Berlin, wo er sich habilitieren konnte. 1855 erhielt er einen Ruf der ETH Zürich für technische und mathematische Physik. 1857 erschien seine Arbeit über die kinet. Gastheorie, in der die idealen Gasgesetze und der Avogadrosche Satz auf atomistischer Basis begründet wurden. 1858 führte er den Begriff der mittleren freien Weglänge, des mittleren Impulses und der mittleren Energie ein. 1865 entwickelte er den zweiten Hauptsatz der Thermodynamik und schuf den Begriff der Entropie, als Zustandsfunktion deren Gesamtwert in einem abgeschlossenen Raum nie abnimmt. 1867 wechselte er nach Würzburg und 1869 schließlich nach Bonn, wo

Studiò fisica, matematica e storia a Berlino (1840-44), ottenendo il dottorato ad Halle nel 1848. Fu professore di fisica tecnica e matematica al Politecnico fed. (dal 1855 ) e all'Univ. (dal 1857) di Zurigo. Nel 1867 si trasferì a Würzburg (1867) e nel 1869 a Bonn. Nel 1850 pubblicò negli Annalen der Physik una prima ricerca sulla termodinamica, che definiva ancora "teoria meccanica del calore". Sulla base delle tesi di Sadi Carnot (1824), egli si interessò inizialmente ai cicli, poi generalizzò progressivamente la sua teoria fino a darle la sua formulazione definitiva (1865). Le sue scoperte gli permisero di introdurre un'importante nozione nella termodinamica, la funzione di stato dell'entropia (quella dell'energia era già conosciuta). Il secondo grande contributo di C. fu il suo lavoro sulla teoria cinetica dei gas (1857), nella quale fondò, sulla base degli atomi, la teoria dei gas perfetti e la legge di Avogadro. Nel 1858 C. utilizzò per la prima volta il concetto di libero cammino medio, cioè la distanza media percorsa da una molecola tra due urti successivi con altre molecole; sostenne inoltre l'idea che le molecole fossero composte da più di un atomo. document.write(""); CLAVICYTHERIUM CLAUSIUS, RUDOLF JULIUS EMMANUEL (182 2—I888), CLAUSTHAL, or KLAUSTIIAL, a town of Germany, in the Prussian Harz, lying on a bleak plateau, 1860 ft. above sea-level, 50 m. by rail W.S.W. of Halberstadt. Pop. (1905) 8565. Clausthal is the chief mining town of the Upper Harz Mountains, and practically forms one town with Zellerfeld, which is separated from it by a small stream, the Zeilbach. The streets are broad, opportunity for improvement having been given by fires in 1844 and 1854; the houses are mostly of wood. There are an Evangelical and a Roman Catholic church, and a gymnasium. Clausthal has a famous mining college with a mineralogical museum, and a disused mint. Its chief mines are silver and lead, but it also smelts copper and a little gold. Four or five sanatoria are in the neighbourhood. The museum of the Upper Harz is at Zellerfeld. Claus thal was founded about the middle of the 12th century in consequence probably of the erection of a Benedictine monastery (closed in 1431), remains of which still exist in Zellerfeld. At the beginning of the 16th century the dukes of Brunswick made a new settlement here, and under their directions the mining, which had been begun by the monks, was carried on more energetically. The first church was built at Clausthal in 1570. In 1864 the control of the mines passed into the hands of the state. CLAVECIN, the French for clavisymbal or harpsichord (Ger. Clavicymbel or Dockenklavier), an abbreviation of the Flemish clavisinbal and Ital. clavicimbalo, a keyboard musical instrument in which the strings were plucked by means of a plectrum consisting of a quill mounted upon a jack.
