[ attachment ] Proposed bill would list convicted sex offenders on campuses The Knoxville News-Sentinel February 6, 2002 By Rebecca Ferrar NASHVILLE - Convicted sex offenders working or studying at the University of Tennessee and other state campuses would be listed on the state's registry of sex offenders, under legislation proposed by Sen. Tim Burchett. The bill applies to all state colleges - UT and the Board of Regents - and would require offenders to register as they now do with other law enforcement agencies. "Anything we can do to protect the public, especially children and students, from convicted sex offenders, is a very good thing," Burchett, R-Knoxville, said. "If I had my way, these predators would still be behind bars instead of being let loose on our streets where they might be tempted to prey on more victims."

Tense, taxing days await legislators Naifeh counting votes for his bill By Rebecca Ferrar Knoxville News-Sentinel NASHVILLE - House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh is rounding up votes for his state income tax plan, Republicans plan to present a proposal to expand the sales tax, and demonstrators are expected to show up in force at the Capitol this week. Key legislators don't think Naifeh will put his bill up for a vote this week in the full House, although House leaders say they could meet two session days this week instead of one. "We're getting there," Naifeh (D-Covington) said during his weekly press briefing Thursday. He said he would call the measure up for action "when the 50 votes are there" among the 99 House members. Naifeh's 4.5 percent flat-rate income tax plan was approved on a voice vote last Tuesday by the House Finance Committee - the first time that the committee had taken such a vote. The bill was approved Thursday by the House Calendar Committee, so it can be scheduled for a floor vote. Naifeh is letting the bill "lay on the desk"
